Expecting a shiny new Dell in time to head back to school? You might want to rethink your purchase, as some Dell models are facing lengthy delays of up to 11 days, meaning they may not be in hand by the time you head to campus.
NotebookReview reports that its Dell forum has become a hotbed of activity in recent weeks, with most posts discussing shipping delays at Dell. Dell itself has acknowledged some of these issues publicly: Its XPS M1330 (pictured), an otherwise stellar notebook and one of the best thin-and-light models on the market today, is experiencing sustained backlogs in all colors except black. The primary culprit appears to be the paint job quality, but certain parts shortages are an issue, too. The white M1330 has been discontinued altogether.
The shortage also extends, apparently, to Inspiron 1420, 1520, and 1720 models.
One poster has been kind enough to break down the delays by color, at least for the 1520: Black and white models have no current delay, while red, green, and pink ones are held up for 11 days. Component options you select may increase that delay further, though.

Just another example of what has become known as "Dell heck quot;. As a once-loyal customer, I've experienced first-hand just how far Dell has sunk, and why Mike Dell came back as CEO to try and right the ship. I'm now as satisfied as can be with a new HP notebook, a 10-month old HP desktop, HP Office Jet printer..... okay, you get the point. If I told my complete Dell-heck story, I'd be typing for the next hour. This news hardly surprises me. There are reasons why HP is now #1 in worldwide PC sales and rapidly closing the gap on U.S. market share. HP is simply a better-run company that pours billions of dollars into research & development, while Dell doesn't really invent anything, so no need to invest in innovation.
Ordered a black Inspiron 1420 in the middle of july, and had an original "Estimated ship date" of 8/3. When 8/3 arrived, the estimate was pushed back to 8/10, and when the tenth arrived the date was pushed back to the 17th. I have every reason to believe that when the 17th arrives, it will be pushed back to the arbitrary date of the 24th, etc. Dell has had little to no communication with me, and the only way I am aware of the delays is from checking the order status (no emails, phone call, etc.) Support informed me that my order was back ordered due to screen and color issues, although I ordered the standard black with the standard screen. I did not expect this from dell, and will hesitate to recommend using them again.
uhhh yeah i ordered my laptop july 13 with an ESD of Aug 1. July 27 came, I called n asked how it was going and they said it was on schedule. Of course Aug 2 came and they said it was delayed until AUGUST 28th. Yes 4 weeks. Im currently waiting to receive such , I have received NO type of compensation for my wait and I am about to enter my first year of college. I doubt I will buy from dell again
