Automated Toll Roads Wrecking Bank Accounts, Marriages

Whaddaya know? I happened upon two links about the hazards of "E-Z Pass" and other automated toll road systems on the very same day. While I remain an enthusiastic supporter of automated toll paying—I wouldn't dream of trying to cross a San Francisco Bay Area bridge without my transponder, though apparently I'm in a very slim minority, based on the volume of traffic backed up in the "cash" lines—there are some interesting caveats in these two stories that merit some extra consideration for the paranoid and the morally bent.

First is something that all of us can relate to: Overbilling. Many automated tolling systems check when you enter the toll road, then check again when you leave. Travel a short distance and you pay a small fee; travel a long one and you get charged more. That makes sense, but if the sensors don't record you entering the road, you get billed the maximum amount, no matter where you exit. In the case of this Philadelphian, that means she gets charged $5 periodically instead of 75 cents. Several times a month. That adds up. Now this is really a case of poor technology: The sensors at the onramp she takes just don't work well enough, or perhaps she needs a new transponder, but it's also a lesson in consumer vigilance. If the driver didn't read her bill religiously, she wouldn't have noticed the extra charges. What's worse is that the state requires she fill out a (paper) form for each and every erroneous charge in order to get a refund. Boo.

In nearby New Jersey, toll roads created problems of a different (and more serious) type for one driver, who found that the records the tollways kept of his driving could be used against him... in divorce court. You can probably see where this one's going: His wife's lawyer introduced his E-Z Pass records in court. He said he was in Pennsylvania. The state said he was driving around Jersey, obviously to some hussy's love den. States have differing policies about releasing this information to the courts, but of course the spouse can always provide it if he or she has copies of the records or access to the account. Lesson learned: Philanderers should always pay cash. (For the sarcasm-impaired, please note I am not encouraging adultery or "blaming" it on technology.)

EZPass doesn't break up marriages, cheating does.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. So far, I have not been over charged. When going through the ezpass tolls I always slow down enough to make sure the "go" light comes on before leaving the toll. I now live in Indiana, but travel to NY/NJ to visit family several times a year, (I'm from NY.) My travels take me through OH, WV, and PA to get there. Since my commute is longer, the maximum charges apply to me anyway. However, in short commutes from one relative to another in the NY area, I have not had any issues, yet! I do check my statements and have realized that since I purchased my ezpass, I save in toll fees as apposed to using cash.

I think adding an additional tax to gas is the last thing we need, prices are high enough already. Especially when I rarely travel on a toll highway. Why should I pay to upkeep a road I never travel on?

Thank God I live in AZ...no toll roads anywhere. Sounds like a hassle.

I beg your pardon, but EZ-Pass didn't create problems for anyone in divorce court for being unfaithful to their spouse. The person guilty of infidelity created the problem. Let's be realistic and put the blame where it belongs. Richard

Why do we have to re-invent the wheel every time. Europe has tried tolls many time, France has kept them, Germany added tax to the gas, and there are no tolls at all. The Autobahn is better than fantastic, there is money to always ensure the roads are in great condition. Very few people can say they have a transponder and it is great, we have all had to phone/fight at one time or another. Get rid of the tolls, if they are so desperate for our money, and cannot find another tax to slam us with, just add it to the gas, then we all pay equally. Remember that Germany has it written int their constitution - that money received from the gas toll tax, can only be used on road and road related services, not on any wars, pensions, etc. Hence the great condition of all the roads, not just the highways.

I think it's a matter of receiving a discount for using the tag rather than paying extra for not using it. Also, though US currency is "legal tender for all debts public and private" it does not require anyone to accept cash to conduct a transaction. They can simply opt NOT to do buisiness. Look at all of the places that refuse to accept large bills...

I have been charged for 3 axles. Now I am worried when I went over the san mateo brige thru the carpool and I heard the beep. Was I charged? Do they check or is this our responsibility? At 4 dollars a pop I watch

On the ILLINIOS TOLLWAY if you don't want to pay double for using cash, don't take the toll road. Stick to free roads. You are paying double to pay the salary of the HUMAN toll collector that only people who pay cash require. The I-Pass website lets account holders check the tolls online that are deducted from their accounts, verify and update info like license plate numbers, etc. Its a great system.

I've used EZ-Pass for 5 years and I've never had a problem. I've saved a lot of time at the toll booths on Interstate 95 between Washington DC and NY. I recommend everybody gets it.

If the spouse kept the marriage interesting, instead of turning into a troll after several years, there would be no cheaters!

Our toll lines here in Orlando are long for those paying cash at times... for those of us with an e-pass -- never a wait. Our transponders emit a beep every time it is read so you are well aware that it registered your passing. Paying cash here would be a HUGE difference in time. Seems like those of you in the north are simply suffering from lousy technology. E-Pass here is the only way to go. Not to mention, we get discounts on the cost of the toll for using the E-Pass.

Wrecking bank accounts? Possibly. But wrecking Marriages? No. The Marriage was wrecked when the guy stepped out to the hussy. The EZPass docs were just the electronic equivalents of lipstick on the collar. The marriage would still have been wrecked if the EZPass had been taken out of the equation, IMHO. SO don't blame EZPass for that!

The tolls are the price paid for using the road. It would be unfair to ask for a general tax, people from downstate do not need to pay for roads for urban dwellers. It is their choice where to live and part of their cost of living.

You have got to be kidding....the ONLY one at fault for being where they shouldnt be is NOT with the E-Z Pass, but with the driver and the infidel. Make these people own up to their marital problems and not on objects!!

I don't care one way or the other about automated billing on toll roads, but let's get something straight, it's the people who act like donkeys who are the ones who wreck marraiges. When are we as a society going to start accepting some personal responsibility for our actions?

I thought EZ pass was supposed to cut costs, well not here in NY City, especially on The Triborough Bridge, They probally cut some toll clerks, but they must have added hundreds of these useless cops that stand around watching cars go through the tolls, and thats only in perfect conditions, God forbid its raining or the tempeture drops below 70F, OR OF COURSE YOU NEED HELP, they are nowhere to be found. Did there Mothers never tell them to look both ways before they cross the road, that would be good advice instead of holding up your hand and walking across the lanes without even looking that could get you killed. Other than that I love EZ-PASS !!

Our new world, where computers seem to rule our lives is horrendous. Outsourcng and using computer machines to get info on credit cards etc. Are other bones of contention. I wouldn't even begin to go down the street of how this present adminitration has taken our country to it's present status. As a WW2 veteran I think we have the right to say exactly how we feel. Isn't it interesting how many are deserting a sinking ship. Not one of them spent a day seving in the military. From, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rowan, Cheney and our leader who went AWOL and refused a DIRECT ORDER.Incredible,Let's hope that someone in Nov. 08 will restore our country to it's former greatness.
