UPDATE: Looks like Apple heard the anger loud and clear. Jobs announced today that all iPhone owners will be offered a $100 gift certificate for the Apple Store (online or offline). Is it enough to make amends? You be the judge.

I didn't think it was possible, but Apple has finally managed to get everyone mad at it, even long-time Apple loyalists. Some might say, especially the loyalists. Why? Because of Apple's 11th hour announcement at the very end of its press conference yesterday that it was cutting the price of the iPhone from $599 to $399.

Mad, about a price cut? You would be too if you'd shelled out 600 bucks on launch day, only to have the price drop by a third after a mere two months.

While electronics prices are well-known for their constant downward spiral, a price cut of this magnitude, this soon after the original release of the product, is unprecedented. Steve Jobs tried to spin the cut in an otherwise content-free USA Today interview, saying "Well, that's what happens in technology." But he failed to explain how the company either managed to achieve such radical cost improvements in just 60 days... or whether the company was just going to be trimming the vast profit margin it's been getting on the It Phone of 2007. I suspect it's the latter... and I don't really blame Jobs for not admitting that publicly.

Consumer reaction has been largely one of outrage, with complaints from people that they've been ripped off for being the first to jump on the iPhone bandwagon. While they might eventually forgive Jobs, Wall Street has not. Apple stock was down over 6 percent yesterday and, as I write this, is down another 2 percent.

So why did Apple, a company not known for trimming prices, cut the price of the iPhone? (Many, myself included, were expecting the price to stay the same until iPhone 2 launches, with this model then being discontinued.) The rationale appears to be a simple attempt to grab market share, no matter what it costs. But those tactics are strange for Apple, a company that has always been happy to sit back, charge a premium for its products, and skim the wealthiest customers out of the pool. Competing on price has never been in the Apple playbook... but perhaps the reality of how intense the competition in the cell phone market is has finally dawned on the company: The intensely competitive cell phone business just isn't the same as the unchallenging MP3 player industry.

Did you buy an iPhone before the price drop? Remember that if you purchased it in the last two weeks from AT&T or the Apple store, you can get a refund of the price difference from the store. Your credit card company might also offer price guarantees; check with your issuer. TUAW has additional suggestions... or you can just vent. Tell us, in the spirit of this online therapy session: How does that make you feel?

don't know why yours doesn't work with outlook coz mine does. And YES I AM FURIOUS about the price cut because I paid $499 for my 4 GB and now the 8 GB is $100 less than that???? I expected better than that from Apple. But guess it's always all about the money and to krap with the customers. I'm glad their stock dropped. They owe us!

well thats what happens when you put out a product that has had so much hype pumped into it and is then released. I still dont have an iphone but that fact that i knew as a smart consumer that it would eventually become more affordable because thats how it always is. Look at the Ipod when it was first released and look at it now. yeah there have been improvements made in the more recent models but like anything, wait it out and you will save.

that is the price you pay to say you are one of the first to have something new. quit crying, you were suckered in by the "i got have to own it first" thinking. the ones who waited are the smart ones and it makes you mad. wait a little longer and they other companies will start making their versions and the price will really drop then

I dont understand the outrage. This is a company that is designed to make money. They now understand that even if its the best phone on the market they will not get as much as they can unless they drop the price. I got one when they came out and I am mad that I spent an extra $200 but now I can get another one for my girlfriend or just wait until the 16 bit comes out. Apple's responsiblity is to make great products that work well. Not to price people out. Grow up if you are b*tching that much about the cost of the phone why did you buy it in the first place?

ANYBODY KNOW ANYTHING? THINKING A LITTLE BIT OF GRABBING APPLE SHARES IF PRICE GOES LOW ENOUGH--ON THE THEORY THAT IT WILL PREEMPT GOOGLE. AM I NUTS OR...? JIM G. BURBANK, CA

This should be enough for snarling teeth & razor sharp claws to be drawn back. I agree with the industry. What YOU are willing to pay! You made the choice. Live w/ it. Not much you can do. Regardless that this incident took 2 months as most technology has a longer curve before price cutting, the practice is still the same. Especially now that holidays are upon us. So take back your $100 with a smile and be grateful.

Hello Apple iPhone people! This is classic Marketing 101. Consumers fit into 3 categories. The people that just gotta have it immediately pay a premium price. The iPhone is a prime example. A little patience could have saved you a bundle. Then of course, the people that have a life & could care less about the next greatest gadget. Good grief...how about some cheese with that whine! Seriously..who camps out at Apple for an iPhone?

I wanted to buy an Iphone so badly that I almost succumbed to waiting hours (or days) in line for one. For one reason or another however, I couldn't reason myself to do it. Thankfully, the old adage still rings true: "Good things come to those who wait..." Sorry Apple enthusiasts. I truly do sympathize.

It's been the same throughout tech history. Early adopters who just have to be the first on their block to have a gadget pay the highest price for it, and often suffer the bugs that accompany Rev.A products. So don't act like a spoiled crybaby just because you wanted the street cred of being one of the first to own something.

Think about it people, we live in a market/demand economy, and if you're that "type" of person that has to have the Newest, Hottest, Most talked about thing,....then tuff ----- !! You paid to have it opening day, the 1st hour, everyone and anyone who know the fads knows that companies ALWAYS drop their prices after a huge demanded product. The darn thing has re-invented the wheel (or Phone) for that matter, and i think is an amazing product. I have been a mac user for over 15 years, and love every product they come out with!! MaD LuV and keep it up SJ and the creation team....

i for one wouldnt even dare fork over that kind of bread for a phone whether its a i--phone or not the whole f----in tech world has gone absolutely in sane over some stupid, temporary techno phone,s that most likely be obsolete in 6months or so before something else comes out to make the so clled i--phone of know great importance. and you thrill seekers blew your money for nothing! ill just st back and watch you guys waste your money for nothing. k, james.

What has gone unnoticed is the quiet discontinuation of the 4GB iPhone. So the entire sales lifetime of this product was two months? If it was such a mistake, why sell it in the first place? I thought Apple didn't make mistakes, so why cut it out before it's even had time to get scratched up? Was it just a gimmick to squeeze money out of the people who didn't want the most expensive iPhone but still had to have the status of the product? Now that they have waited in line and gotten to be first, the product is simply obsolete. TWO MONTHS!! And people ----- about Microsoft.

The moral of this story: Early adopters always get burned. If you don't want to be burned, don't early adopt. This behavior from Apple was a given and is completely expected. Considering that you can get a Mini Mac for the same price point as an iPhone, something had to give. The price point for the product just didn't make sense in the current cell phone market. Even $399 is still a bit on the high side for a cell phone. When they can get it down to $199 or even $249, then that's at least closer to other phone competitor counterparts. After all, it's still labeled as 'just another cell phone' even with all of its additional PDA functionality.

This is hilarious. Anyone who stood in line and waited for the Iphone is getting exactly what they deserve. Did they not read all the articles written months before the phone came out about the price possibly dropping and possible changes from Apple? All the self-important people who decided they needed to spend $600 bucks on a phone have no real right to be upset. How many times have you bought something and then a few weeks later found out it went on sale? It happens all the time!!! In some instances you can get a price adjustment if it was within a week, which is precisely what Apple is doing. I like Apple. I like the Iphone. I dont have one but thats only because I think with all the "other" things I could spend money on, even $399 is a lot for a cell phone. But if I decided to cough up the money for the phone only to find out it dropped $200 dollars, heck yeah I would be mad... but it would be my own fault. Then I would be a sucker too!!!

My best advice, wait the IPhone is great but wait till cingular starts selling them and apple starts offering suppor i cracked my screen just a lil and they wanted $250 to repair it... This is with apple care and pro care and I can't get inssurance on it? Hmmmm i wonder why? The corruption of money hungry corrparations kills me but its us that are feeding them whatever its just one big contradiction.....

Don;t get all upset if you were one of thoes to pay 600 for the iPhone. Once the 3rd party support is availible next year all you have to do is restore your phone from that hacked version of 1.0.1 firmware. After a restore, there is no way to trace your hackand your warrenty will be back in full. Unless of course you were one of those to disasemble and Solder for a perminent hack, then AT&T nor Apple will no longer cover your phone. Sorry. Until Then Just Sit n' Wait.

What fool would spend 8 dimes for a PC? Spend it on a shrink instead. You just had to have the fastest 'vette in the corporate parking lot.

You deserve what you get for waiting in line for something so stupid to begin with.
