People of the internet, you have been heard! After being made a laughingstock due to the poor reception of Windows Vista (and much to the horror of the computer equipment companies which have to install the software on the PCs they sell), Microsoft has quietly begun to allow manufacturers to preload computers with a "downgrade" option, letting users run (screaming, I figure) back to Windows XP.
Details vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and only apply to computers sold with Vista Business or Ultimate editions. Different vendors are handling the downgrade in a variety of ways: Fujitsu and HP, for example, offer the option of getting an XP disc in the box with its laptops, while Lenovo is allowing users to purchase a Windows XP recovery CD any time until July 31, 2008. In most cases, the XP CDs are very inexpensive, sometimes free.
Meanwhile, Microsoft's requirement that vendors no longer preload XP on computers is still set to take effect on January 31, 2008, though vendors have four more months to attempt to get Microsoft to change its tune.
Bottom line: If you bought a new machine with Vista preloaded (and remember, it must be Professional or Ultimate; neither Home version is eligible), call the company that sold you the computer or check its website to see if a downgrade CD is available. If you're customizing a new computer, inquire into downgrade a CD at the time of purchase. It'll be a lot easier to get one now rather than after you've bought it.

That's pretty helpful news. I just feel sad for the poor souls with Vista Professional or lower (ie: me).
My new DELL XPS for work came loaded with Vista. At first I was ok with this. However, now that I have installed some additional software, I'm not so happy. Even software that says it is Vista Compatible has caused stability issues. I've had to do a System Restore more times than I can count because Vista can't load on boot up. Ugh.....
Haaaaa Haaaaa Haaaaaaa after seeing an impending HDD failure coming and seeing MS touting it's shadow and backup technolgies - as something to do before HDD failure, and then finding that I can't make a disk image of the old drive and onto a new drive.... and that MS puts in KEY SCRAMBLING software to screw up REAL disk imaging products..... So what should have taken only 2 or so hours, took about 4 weeks to rebuild a system with all the links and settings.... That's 4 MORE weeks of my life having to overcome the obstacles that Microsoft throws into my path... Toss in garbage like MS ONLY putting pop-up blockers into Internet Deplorer, about 5 or 6 years after Opera and Firefox had installed them... And and and and and - now they have them dreadful OVERSEAS call centers.... Well Microsoft FISTER? ... I upgraded from Hex-Pea to Ubuntu Linux - OPEN OFFICE is getting really brilliant... my emailer is THUNDERBIRD - with extensions and Fire Fox = Yay!!!! - it's a brilliant web browser. Microsoft Fister and the extremely SLEAZY efforts at getting their OWN LOCKED UP CODE for Orifice 2007, declared to be "OPEN SOURCE"..... Ohhhhh ho ho ho... As if. In Australia we have an extremely greedy and lousy service Phone Company called Telstra... and it's scumbag phone plans - with peak, off peak, day, night, weekend rates and plans..... Where it costs $25 an hour to call a town 60K away, but I can use a calling card to phone the USA for 3c a minute.... Microsoft and it's "dirtbag home" editions and it "superior scumbag" editions and all the flavours in between... it's the same corporate sleaze ware deal... Toss in creating an OS that requires a MASSIVE upgrade in computer power, and it guzzles electricity - how clever - that's just the kind of upgrade we need on a dying polluted planet. Ubuntu Linux = Brilliant. It runs really really well on older machines.. Free and Open Source Software = Amazing. Microsoft Fister - Oh ho ho ho - As if. Microsoft - ay too much scumware policies and corrupt business ethics.... and the company has as much integrity as George Bush... And the competition - being me as a user of and contributor to the FREE and OPEN SOURCE software movement - Changing all my systems over to Open Office and then Ubuntu Linux, is about the best thing I have ever done.... No - make that getting rid of Microsoft - has been the best thing I have ever done. Going back to Microsoft and then upgrading ??? to Microsoft FISTER - Sure..
I'm building my first computer. One of the first things I did was to purchase Windows XP PRO. I know that Microsofts OS' are like a can of worms, and don't get me started as to how obnoxiously arrogant the company is. Anyway.., I know that I should try Linux, and open source software, but I'm afraid of the learning curve and since using 98 and XP. I haven't had any major problems with those OS'. I know that Vista is in my future at some point, but that won't be for a while, and I do intend to spend time getting familiar with Linux, etc. Or.., I could go back to my first love APPLE! ;-)
i had the same problems with my windows as the ones mentioned above... all that was solved after i switched to a mac... now im never going back... when are you guys switching..?
I simply want to wait for a Leopard Mac with a 45nm chip and will simply run XPpro to run my Windows applications. It's got to be a better alternative than being forced into a natively loaded Vista machine.
I am an everyday home user. Bought a Dell and it just came with Vista. I found fast that I should not have jumped in unaware. Didn't even know it was new. I have had nothing but difficulties since. Nothing I was told was compatible really was, not my camera, my printer, graphic programs or games. I had to go to their help sites. The badly accented help I get from a foreign country is difficult to understand and has a job an American can use. The free publicity they get from me...don't go Vista.
Sounds like i should be glad i never got around to the vista update rebate my computer came with when bought last year.
My 4yr. Win. XP works fine/no problems ever. Intended buying a new Dell/VISTA. After reading all the problems with VISTA will wait a few mos. TY for the info. Gummy
I'm really need a laptop yesterday, but I'm terrified to buy one because of vista. I can definetly live w/ xp for several years to come. Now I'm even thinking of going mac. This is not fear or ignorance. Microsoft has a nasty track record of forcing thier new os down our throats. Last time I checked, we still had free will in this country. Maybe europe is on to something? We should have the right to choose what we want to run on our systems.
I would like Win 98SE windows update to work. I do not mind paying for the right to use it. vista does not look easy to use
You have GOT to be kidding me!! I like XP much better than Vista! This is so not fair! :(
I need Xp Pro desperately. Just purchased a new HP and of course it had Vista. I live on a boat and a lot of our navigation software is not compatable with Vista. I tried to replace with XP but 50% of the folks I inquired of said it could not be done. The other 50 % said sure no problem. I even contacted HP and they sid if I did, the warranty would be no good. Just do not know what to do.
I switched to Mac now I have good machines. I work in the IT industry and I found that Mac OS X is a very good running OS...I can do everything a Windows user can do with out all the problems...I just wish I could find a app that I can make changes and work in the active directory.

How nice! If you are a business customer or ultra customer, you can "downgrade." What about us poor schnooks that only have Vista Home Premium or regular Vista Home? Since we are not corporate buyers, we have to continue to suffer and without the technical support assets that most business owners have. Again the consumer suffers.
