US Navy to Alter "Swastika" Building Due to Web Maps

Your tax dollars at work: The US Navy will be spending about $600,000 to redesign or camouflage a 1960s barracks building in San Diego because of complaints that it looks like a swastika when viewed from the air. In the past this might have been a problem only for the occasional air traveler who happened over Coronado island, but with the advent of aerial mapping and visualization tools like Google Earth, everyone can see anything from the sky. In fact, many people have made a game out of finding oddities in satellite photos.

Now it's one thing to see landmarks like this and snicker over a designer's missteps 40 years ago (the Navy says it noticed the shape but that it didn't think anyone would see it from above), but it's another thing altogether to complain to the Navy about the shape of a building when viewed from space. But people really seem to have the time on their hands: The Navy says it's been inundated with complaints; enough, I suppose, to justify spending that much money on new structures and extra bushes. It's the first known case of its kind.

So what will the building look like when the job is done, I wonder? A set of four connected squares? A pinwheel formed from triangles? Post your ideas for what the Navy ought to do out of the wayward swastika here and we'll see if we can't pass them along to the powers that be.

#71 has the right answer. She wants to raise taxes for everything including to pay for the security guards at her home in Chappaqua where she never is any more. I bet those guys are having a blast. Is there anything on this earth that hasn't been blamed on Cheyney and Bush? Let's get a little more patriotic. How about having large cauldrons of oil put on the end of each point of the swaztika and light them every night to remind the world of what happened to the Nazi regime.

who cares? the past is the past, its a building, nothing less or nothing more. I can think of many things that money could be better well spent on

It may look like a bunch of L's but to the eyes of someone who saw it for the first time their exact words were, "It looks like a Swastika". The original building could have been built with a little more taste for the feelings of other people when they see this building for the first time.

If they are set on doing something about it (which I don't see why), they could just cover the top of two of the areas and make squares out of them. That will provide shade and pleasant open space during heat/rain etc... That will cost less than adding a new building and it's functional. They could also go as far as making a roof garden after those areas are cover and create a rain water collection system to irrigate the property!

NAB Coronado found a way to get money to improve the residental area on base because the buildings are very old and much needed repairs. Thanks to our tax payers who complained enough we are able to get a little over a milion dollars. Half of that goes to the "Sea Bee building" (aka: Swastika building). Everbody on base thought it was funny and at the same time who cares. Just glad the base got money finally to help improve the area and service members morale in some form or way. So is it a waste? I think not.

People who find this offensive are a right to be offended, if they are Jewish. Good for you have a cookie. They have no right to spend out tax money on something so trivial and inconsequential. Spend the money on a new fuel source, the poor, single mothers... seriously, people are so !@#$ing moronicly retarded.

Simply put a lattice roof or grid covering structure over the four outside open spaces, matching the rectangular dimensions of the existing 'modules.' Construct the faux roof edge coping, etc. to blend in. This will "complete the squares", look normal from above and not cost nearly as much as completing the squares with fully filled interiors. Lattices will also let in light and make nice airy courtyard shelters from below. If more interior space is desired, go ahead and build complete additions.

What a waste of OUR money! This $ could be spent on giving some better computer to our schools, help out some military families, etc.. My husband is in the Marines and we live on Camp Pendleton. I guess the ZIONIST got another thing they wanted other than owning our media and the billions we send to Israel already.

Why don't all you people do a little research on the swastika and find out the true meaning of this symbol. Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures like China, Japan, India, Southern Europe, and Native Americans. Throughout the past 3,000 years it represented life, sun, power, strength, and good luck. Why do all you people have to see the negative and evil in things that are meant as positive symbols. One more thing the "Sanskrit way" is basically Hindu and Buddah in which if you knew what you were talking about you would know that left and right are used. There is no "Sanskrit way." it's an ancient language, not a "WAY." I'm sure people TRY to differentiate to MAKE them different. But a swastika, is a tetraskelion, is a wan, is a fylfot, is a Hakenkreuz, no matter how you turn it.

Unfortunate but not that much of a big deal. And #11 "sexyplayfulblonde" I know it's great to blame Bush for everything, but if you read the article, this building was constructed in the sixties...Duh. Don't let me hear YOU complain about any dumb blonde jokes. WOW!

I'm really curious. I have read alot of this post and a few people have stated the complex was designed to be veiwed as bombers going after the nazis. Im not a vet but both of my grandfathers were. I think they and many of their generation held this belief. If the author of the article were decent at their job they should have researched not caused a battle online. If people are offended at the design they should learn from past mistakes and dont bost a thing as terrible as war. No matter who wins.

I was stationed at these barracks long ago and changing the look is a waiste of time and money. I would like to recommend to the navy contractors that the next buildings constructed on base resemble someone shooting the bird.

Geeze Louise! This sanskrit symbol had been used for over 3000 years, from ancient Egyptian cultures to the modern-day Pennsylvania Dutch, to symbolize life, power, strength, and GOOD LUCK; all positive things! Find a better use for $600,000 already! You KNOW, with cost overruns, this project will exceed $6,000,000!

Wow. I can see what the people who are complaining mean, but I agree with final_station. There are better ways to spend tax dollars. Correction: INFINITELY better ways.

Two questions: 1) Where are the complaints coming from? I'd like to ask these people or organization(s) how it is they can ask for a modification to this building in this time of economic distress. I am quite sure the designers of the building did not "salute" nazism when they designed the building. 2) How can the Navy justifiy this change? Is it Navy (military-at-large?) policy to appease those with "sensitivity" claims?
