US Navy to Alter "Swastika" Building Due to Web Maps

Your tax dollars at work: The US Navy will be spending about $600,000 to redesign or camouflage a 1960s barracks building in San Diego because of complaints that it looks like a swastika when viewed from the air. In the past this might have been a problem only for the occasional air traveler who happened over Coronado island, but with the advent of aerial mapping and visualization tools like Google Earth, everyone can see anything from the sky. In fact, many people have made a game out of finding oddities in satellite photos.

Now it's one thing to see landmarks like this and snicker over a designer's missteps 40 years ago (the Navy says it noticed the shape but that it didn't think anyone would see it from above), but it's another thing altogether to complain to the Navy about the shape of a building when viewed from space. But people really seem to have the time on their hands: The Navy says it's been inundated with complaints; enough, I suppose, to justify spending that much money on new structures and extra bushes. It's the first known case of its kind.

So what will the building look like when the job is done, I wonder? A set of four connected squares? A pinwheel formed from triangles? Post your ideas for what the Navy ought to do out of the wayward swastika here and we'll see if we can't pass them along to the powers that be.

i dont think its the navys fault, but the radicals who complain and dont care that it's tax money that needs to be spent to fix it; just leave it, imo, its just a building.

The Denver Airport (conspiracy theorist's favorite) has its runways arranged in a very swastika-like shape. It almost seems intentional, because from an air traffic control point of view, this is one of the worst configurations of runways, both for safety and efficiency.

Those buildings look like they need at least a $600K renovation anyway. Might as well get rid of the swastika at the same time.

It's a waste of money to change it, plus that symbol has other meanings than the oh so imfamous one. People really need to wake up and focus more on important issues.

It IS a swastika and they had to have planned it that way when it was designed...

I think all the people who lodged complaints should have put their money where their complaints were and paid for the changes if they found them so offensive.

What a waste of money. No one would have noticed it had they decided to NOT spend 600,000 and inform the media.

Leave it like it is. I'm sure if we look hard and long enough we can find anything out of everything.

Waste of taxpayer money. Who cares what it looks like? Maybe they can just paint "not a swastica" on the roof.

you are actually telling me the navy cared about what some people said about the shape of a building? im shocked the navy cared about what those people said, let alone astonished by the fact the navy is actually changing the building. its a building, im sure its fine on the inside, its not for looks, so who cares?

You have to be kidding? Oh no, just another waste of "our" money. Just another way to stick it to most American's who are just trying to make a living and maybe, just maybe save a little money. Thanks to all you in the congress/etc who like to touch shoes in mens rooms.

I knew the Navy had a good side. Too bad the eternal whiners don't view it that way. W P W W

Just buy a tarp and cover the top of the complex. Should be about $5000 bucks.
