US Navy to Alter "Swastika" Building Due to Web Maps

Your tax dollars at work: The US Navy will be spending about $600,000 to redesign or camouflage a 1960s barracks building in San Diego because of complaints that it looks like a swastika when viewed from the air. In the past this might have been a problem only for the occasional air traveler who happened over Coronado island, but with the advent of aerial mapping and visualization tools like Google Earth, everyone can see anything from the sky. In fact, many people have made a game out of finding oddities in satellite photos.

Now it's one thing to see landmarks like this and snicker over a designer's missteps 40 years ago (the Navy says it noticed the shape but that it didn't think anyone would see it from above), but it's another thing altogether to complain to the Navy about the shape of a building when viewed from space. But people really seem to have the time on their hands: The Navy says it's been inundated with complaints; enough, I suppose, to justify spending that much money on new structures and extra bushes. It's the first known case of its kind.

So what will the building look like when the job is done, I wonder? A set of four connected squares? A pinwheel formed from triangles? Post your ideas for what the Navy ought to do out of the wayward swastika here and we'll see if we can't pass them along to the powers that be.

This is a ridiculous waste of time, money and resources. What's next? Destroying ancient Roman and Buddhist archeological sites that also demonstrate that symbol? The Nazis hijacked that symbol from history and it needs to be understood in the larger context - not just one evil, horrific episode in the continual human saga of evil, horrific episodes.

How incredibly stupid. Just say sorry and live with it. After all, this is the age of apologies isn't it?

What I want to know is how nobody during coception, planning, or building noticed this at the time. That would look as much like swastika on a blueprint as is does post-construction. Maybe they can just ad a couple more buildings and make it look like a suare instead.... then they can stay they were just expanding.....

I think the Washington Monument looks like a penis. They need to redesign that one for sure!

heres and idea, instead of wasting $600,000 on something so stupid, build houses for the homeless with that money. Atleast that way you will actually be helping people instead of not "offending" someone. and for those people getting "offended"...Don't freaking look at it, the only time you are going to see it is if you fly over it, and even then, close you arrogant eyes.

Wow a building shaped like a Swastika (Which is a symbol meaning good luck)! So what the Nazi's used it as their symbol, so have countless others.

it is also an ancient symbol for the Buddha. goes back thousands of years. the symbol can also be viewed as 4Ls, a double Cross and the list goes on and on and on waaaaay before hitler ever thought of using it.

Dear God, people are stupid. So it looks like a swastika. Big deal! Get over it! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this is retarded!

So now 4 L shaped building are swastika signs... PLEASE. Stop the Stupidity. A leader from the anti defamation league in San Diego is the guy. The news said he called every week to complain or nag. Then he has the nerve to say the Navy is fixing the so called problem on their own accord. If you don't like the way it looks don't go on to Google earth. Then you won't see it. Is okay to have a square house or is that going to upset the Blockheads up the street. They look down on my house. I shall prepare immediately for anarchy that will arise. I understand they have retained Sponge Bob Squarepants .

Leave it alone. Spend the tax dollars on things the troops need like flak jackets and guns.

The Swastika was a Buddhist symbol that was around thousands of years ago. The Swastika was a and still is a good luck sign. Just because people with a mad mind used it in the past, does not make it bad. People need to do more study on the Swastika before they they waste tax dollars on ignorance.

Being jewish, I really don't care. Its not like the navy is going to start gassing Americans, or raiding temples for hostages. Do we really need to waste money to redesign what looks like 4 well-kept buildings?

Wow, all you people objecting to this. They need to change the building. It's a darn Swastika for God's sake. Jewish people should be offended and so should many others. Get over it, it will be changed.

That is a tremendous waste of money. Many fine sailors have passed through those barracks. The funds would be better utilized for new equipment and education for troops. If people do not wish to view the buildings, don't google them !!!!

I think the Navy made it all up just to have a justified reason to spend tax payers money. Just think of how much they have spent in the past and we just didn't know how much it was. I am almost sure, they and other military branches spend about that much on a daily basis. It isn't cheep to have a war you know?

  • 84 Posted by gonzaga_precy on Thu Sep 3, 2009 4:11PM EDT Report Abuse

well.. just want to say goodluck to all the peoples who's criticising in that barracks..who cares..
