Windows XP Gets a Stay of Execution

Good news, Vista haters and XP lovers: Microsoft is extending the sales period for Windows XP, for both retail buyers and computer manufacturers, to June 30, 2008. Smaller computer builders can preload it until January 31, 2009, and in "emerging markets" with "hardware-constrained ultra-low cost PCs," the reprieve has been granted until June 30, 2010.

Wow, color me stunned. Microsoft is certainly a long way from reaching "acceptance" in the five stages of grief, but at least it is now starting to tiptoe past denial over Vista's poor reception. I guess we're now in the third stage: bargaining. ("Just give me five more months and I'll prove that Vista doesn't suck.")

Then again, Microsoft's faux Q&A on this issue (see link below) is filled with self-aggrandizing praise for Vista, how much consumers love it, and how it's going to be the fastest-selling OS of all time. But all the bluster doesn't change the fact that something is down-right rotten in the state of Redmond. In all my years of following the company, I've never heard of backpedaling like this: First it's allowing users to downgrade to XP, now it's un-killing a six-year-old product so people can keep buying it in lieu of a brand new one. Does this sound like a company genuinely pleased about a product that's breaking sales records?

Still, it's nearly inevitable that the day will come when XP is finally given the Old Yeller treatment. But perhaps if customers continue their protests, they'll at least give XP enough of a life extension to survive until Vista's successor comes out... which may just be less tragic. Maybe.

I purchased a new computer that had Vista on it. What garbage. It crashes more than ME did and IE 7, which worked beautifully with XP, completely sucks with Vista. The new Windows Mail is just as bad. Even Office 07 doesn't work as well as 2003 did. No other company could continue to put out substandard products, at premium prices over and over again and still remain in business. Why does Microsoft get away with it? Wouldn't it be nice for them to come out with a product that does what its supposed to do... just once.

How long will Microsoft continue to support XP? I bought my computer new in December and was angry that Microsoft came out with a new system within a few short weeks. Mine is supposedly "Windows Capable". I felt cheated until I started getting the reviews about Vista.

I bought a new computer in June with Vista and it works great. I like it over XP, but just barely. Vista was not part of the equation when buying the computer.

microsoft just got most of the bugs worked out of xp. heck even today my computer downloaded more security fixes. from what ive seen ( tried the vista beta) the vista is more confusing to use than a linux machine..the requirements for vista slow a computer down with the system rescources it uses.

Microsoft corporation, you made a brilliant product in XP Pro and Home edition. Simple and user friendly. I say again "simple and user friendly". If its not broke why fix it? Vista is somewhat easy to use if you are an advanced and seasoned user and familiar with the windows OS, but for newbies its an absolute nightmare. Who are you guys worried about competing with here? Apple? Please. You guys should build on the brilliant XP Pro platform. Best regards.

XP is Good, Vista is Better -- so what? Let them eat cake and get whatever they want. It really makes no difference b/c ppl are still buying Windows w/ a new PC, and in some cases a retail box kit. I have two notebooks -- One is a Core Duo w/ XP Home, and another w/ a Turion X2 w/ Vista Home Premium. Admittedly, Vista is scary new and looks more like a cousin of XP than descendant. That said, I think anyone could use Vista and not have too many problems. One thing MS has undeniably been good at is maintaining backwards compatibility w/ older versions of Windows (and their software).

It doesn't really matter whether Vista is good or bad , many consumers just don't like it . Especially those who buy inexpensive home computers with lower resources , since Vista requires much more computer just to run itself . For many casual users , like myself , it just means that I'll have to buy a much more expensive computer than I need when my current XP system dies . I'll also be angry at Microsoft when my collection of favorite programs and peripherals will not work with Vista . More money down the Microsoft drain to replace programs and hardware that I like , with Vista compatible junk that I don't like . Bring back XP ! Millions of paying customers can't be wrong .

Tried to install both a clean version of Vista home premium on a computer that I built from a brand new Intel 8400 processor and an Intel JO (executive series) board, but kept getting an error mesaage on install. I was able to easily install Windows XP and the computer worked fine. I then tried to upgrade (downgrade) the computed to Vista. Vista installed over tke XP, but by doing so and patching the upgrades, it would no longer read the CD/DVD drive. And Microsoft wonders why people hate Vista ... beyond the unnecessary intrusiveness.
