I've written previously on the horrors of Windows Genuine Advantage, the nagging pop-up in XP that tells you you're an evil evil pirate and need to send Microsoft a check, several times in the last few months. But Windows Vista has something far more sinister in store for the unsuspecting user caught up in Microsoft's frequently inaccurate piracy nets. Lauren Weinstein has the full report.
Instead of mere pop-ups, Vista appears to contain a host of anti-piracy technologies that could make your life a living hell. Instead, Vista might boot only in safe mode (the extremely limited version of the OS that strips out vital features) or require you use a web browser that quits once every hour. Thinking about using the upcoming, browser-based Office Live to compose your resume? You might not be so happy when your browser abruptly quits in the middle of the "Accomplishments" section.
The good news, if you can call it that, is that Microsoft hasn't yet said it plans to actually use this heavy-duty anti-piracy system in the real world. But as Weinstein notes, the very fact that Microsoft has the ability to kill-switch your operating system should give you pause. From the price to the bugs, there are already plenty of reasons to avoid Vista, at least in the short term. Is this more fuel for the fire or much ado about nothing? Because, you know, Microsoft has never made a mistake accusing innocent users of being pirates...

I wish it had a self-destruct button!!! I upgraded my XP Pro Sp2 to Vista RC1, ooops!!! Well that won't boot and neither will XP. Just a very blank screen....that's ok cause I'll just put XP back on another drive. Wrong again Vista (which won't boot), won't let me. So I install Vista on another drive which Vista then reorders all my disks and to top it off will not let me access anything, I need permission from, get this..."EVERYONE". How the heck do you do that? Oh and Microsoft Office 2007, which I love!!! is no longer installed for me. It tells me to run the installer, which wouldn't be a problem accept it says I don't have enough disk space, but its already installed. I have Vista on there twice already. Do I need Office on there twice too? Needless to say Vista is pretty, but it's also very busy spying on me and then reporting to Microsoft about these programs that they gave me and now I can't run. What will they do for an encore...I can hardly wait.
You installed a Microsoft beta product? Are you insane?
I think MS is going down the wrong path(Grown to big for there britches)If you keep telling someone they cant do something, they are going to do it regardless(human nature)and then move on.There are many small people creating OS that actually work.Ms has turned into a money hungry giant that that will crash and burn on there present path. MS not consumer friendly.
BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH? Two days ago, I installed the Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade on my system. I have a Toshiba Satellite A1054064...a machine that is less than six months old. Within those two days, I have experienced minor nightmare after nightmare. My husband watched in horror as I downloaded and installed MSa's new OS with what he considered to be "Wild Abandon." In truth, the majority of the reason for my "rush install" was pure and unadulterated curiosity. Well, we all know what happened to that poor Cat with the same debilitating psychological problem. About 5-7 restarts later, over the next few days, I shut down my laptop, returned later, switched it back on and got the following result: Computer loaded up to the point just after you see the little green moving lines at the bottom of the screen (displaying copyright microsoft)made the little "starting windows vista" sound (no pretty little blue windows circle appeared)and then the screen stayed black. Forever. No matter what I did. I tried every choice in the F8 startup menu. Nothing made difference. All the lights at the bottom of laptop were lighting up like mad (computer was obviously doing SOMETHING, but what?)and they continued to light up. For experimentation sake, I left the laptop alone for about forty five minutes to give it the benefit of doubt that perhaps it was just doing something really imoortant and I was just being impatient. This after I spent the previous two days dealing with the fact that my sound drivers took about three hours of investigation in order to track down and then install, vista INSISTED that I had no graphics controller, driver etc, no direct X, no 3D abilities etc. and so therefore could not run Aero which (and I'll admit to my occasional one dimensional shallowness in this respect)was honestly about a good forty percent of why I wanted to upgrade in the first place. It took me at least an entire evening spent stubbornly in front of my poor notebook to track down the correct driver for my graphics "card" only to figure out that the REAL issue was that the laptop was set to only search for and install WINDOWS updates, and so therefore refused to install anything related to my processor (intel), sound and video. I won't even go into describing the um....altercation?...that my computer and I found ourselves in when I tried to play my purchased items in iTunes and found that not only was this impossible, but applying apple's "patch" had absolutely no effect either. Finally, Vista refused to load any drivers for my DVD RW drive. It was strange because I am positive that for the first six hours or so, the DVD drive and Vista seemed to be getting along wonderfully and then the drive just disappeared. I was unable to locate any website with the appropriate support for my drive and had resigned myself to simply "hold my horses" and wait for it to be available. I restarted the laptop and never successfully booted into Vista again.
