iPod Turns Five... So What's Next?

Five years, five major "generations"... it's time to pay our respects to what is, if not the most innovative, the most influential piece of consumer electronics in recent memory: The Apple iPod.

Contrary to common misconception, the iPod was not the first MP3 player—not by a longshot. The original MP3 player dates back to the Eiger Labs MP3Man, released in 1998, a full three years before the iPod came around. While you've probably never heard of Eiger Labs, you may remember the Diamond Rio, the first MP3 player to really catch on. (It was so popular it also has the distinction of being the first electronics company sued by the RIAA over the legality of digital music, a suit which the RIAA eventually lost.)

But Eiger and Diamond came and went, paving the way for the Apple iPod, introduced with a 5GB hard drive on October 23, 2001, with the promise of putting "1,000 songs in your pocket."

1,000 songs almost seems quaint now. Today's iPods bear only a passing resemblance to the original, both in the controls and under the hood: The state of the art 5G iPod holds 80GB of data, or about 16,000 songs. The click-wheel has been honed and refined year after year to the point where it's hard to believe the 1G, 2G, and 3G (pictured) iPods actually had buttons. Today's iPods play video in full color and are smaller and slimmer than ever.

So what's the next act for iPod? Apple famously plays its cards close to the vest, which causes rampant speculation from far too many gossip and rumor sites. But two major innovations are widely expected as "just a matter of time" for the company. TrustedReviews has them both mocked up: A touchscreen iPod with a screen that spans the entire width of the device and has no physical controls at all, and the long-fabled iPhone mashup of cell phone handset and MP3 player. While I agree that the iPhone is probably very likely in the near future (though not likely to look much like the mockup on TrustedReviews), I'm skeptical that a touchscreen iPod would work very well, if for no other reason than you'd get fingerprints all over your gorgeous screen any time you wanted to play your videos. Touchscreen certainly looks elegant on the surface, but I for one would prefer actual, physical buttons (on the sides?) and keep my screen pristine.

What do you want your next iPod to do? Happy birthday, little guy.

Well, I own a 30GB iPod Video and a first generation nano (2GB). Both of them worked really hard for me especially when my Parents and Grandparent saw the look on my face when I got the new nano 2GB for Christmas. I was Amazed on what it can do on such a small package.. My Video was also as great or if not even better... with 262k color and video support into a slim package that holds much many more songs. I Became an iPod if not Mac Fanatic because I'm thinking of telling my parents I want a new MacBook and just a snap! I Get one! Ye hey! I.. well not often but sometimes (if I don't have anything to do search the history of iPod, but I only managed to see the 1st, iPod photo, shuffle nano and 5th gen iPod's keynote.... if you have other keynotes. Wells I Maybe late on This iPod.. :D but I do think I know the iPod for thousands of years. It's Design are flawless and how Apple innovate for their customers. I am planning to save money for a new nano, if not RED which is not yet available in my country or will never be available because it is a (product)red edition exclusive for U.S I will hopefully get the Blue or Green one. I just don't think My iPod 30GB can be around me looking bulk... Yes I still think it's big... Around me or in my pocket. Maybe 2GB may also work for me :D just don't like the silver... Black looks cool but I don't think it can be honored as Price Friendly Cause just adding a few bucks can get a 30GB 5.5G Video which is hard to comply... If you like the designs and thinness of the nano better get a cool black 8GB, but if you thin it's a rip off get the video instead or get a much lower capacity one... I would recommend a shuffle for those who wants Shuffle+Surprise+Price+Smallness+Wearability. and nano if you like the thinness the style and a little bit more capacity. and a iPod Vid for more music and videos. iPod for me has been a great companion for a year now and it never let me down. I get bored when I don't have it and can't actually live without it... I also like showing it off my friends like they are from a high mountain or somewhat... I laugh when they don't know how to use the Click wheel and instead of moving it in circles... They just use little portion of the wheel. I Just hope iPod will evolve to a true video iPod and hear the people's voice. I'm sure apple will innovate more and more. Happy Birthday iPod and hope to improve and get more fame then you are already having! :D

the picture looks really really old because it is really old, ptcbrigitte. It's a first gen. iPod with buttons for menu, play/pause, etc. Good work there Sherlock. Did you know that Chicken of the Sea Tuna is not chicken?

Well I don't have an iPod! I just have a normally MP3 player. But I think that it will be a great idea to develop new iPods with more gigabytes, more swiftness and smaller than others... If the cell phones and MP3 can join together an be faster than a normal cell phone then will be more comfortables an more sophisticates.

I am the proud owner of a 5g 30Gb Video iPod that I bought for myself and I find myself falling in love with it over and over again. Apple has designed such a perfect product that I think the iPod will still rule the MP3 player market even well after it's time. My mom has a four gig Mini that she undertands even though she is new to MP3's and players alike. They are so intuitive to use and they are so darn classy! HAPPY BIRTHDAY IPOD! May you live long and prosper. Hahaha!
