Victims of the wildfires that have swept through Southern California this week have a new thing to worry about: Big bills for rented high-tech equipment destroyed by the blazes.
In what sounds like a callous and tragic lapse of judgment, AT&T has slapped San Diego-area residents Matt and Danelle Azola, who were on their honeymoon in Mexico while the fires were getting underway, with a $300 bill. Their crime? Failing to rescue their satellite dish receiver from their burning home before they fled. The house, as you can see in this news report, was completely burned to the ground.
Fortunately, stories like this are rare and seem to be getting even rarer. I don't remember any such tales from the Hurricane Katrina aftermath, but are companies getting greedier in a weak economy? Or is this just one disaster too many? Either way, it's not a good sign.
The good news is that the Azolas should be covered by their insurance plan, when they eventually get paid, but they'll still have to cough up the $300 now unless they want a ding on their credit report. The bad press, of course, is going to cost AT&T considerably more.

Thats why I buy my equipment outright in the beginning and dont follow those freebie offers they give.
Treading on thin ice here Chris!
Wouldn't their home owners insurance cover the loss. AT&T isn't a privately held company they have to account to their shareholders for losses.
Interesting that this is the only negative hit on AT&T through all the crisis. I found this among many other GREAT stories about what AT&T is doing to help the victims. Maybe there was a system glitch on this one. Hope it all works out for the Azola's.
Is a client liable to damages or loss of a satellite dish forever as long as he/she uses the comapny's (Dish Network)services? Does any one know?
I certainly don't think the way the handled it was appropriate but the last time I checked AT&T was running a business not a charity!______If you had a rented BMW in your garage when the fire hit do you think the rental company would just say forget about it? $300 or $75,000 the point is the same and that is why people buy insurance.______THINK PEOPLE!
Is a client liable to damages or loss of the stellite dish forever as long as he/she uses the company's (Dish Network) services? Does any one know?
Considering the amount of money this company makes, I hardly think the loss of one lousy dish is going to put that much of a dent in their coffers. It's a shame that business has come to that point of outright greed. Some people in this country are living on the streets, and eating from garbage cans, and this company worries about a 300 dollar dish. It's bad enough this couple lost their home. Why add to their loss?
scottiecordes, thanks for the DSL Reports story link. I was wondering if there had been a follow-up from AT&T on that.
I borrowed a fairly expensive piece of equipment from my employer. When it was destroyed, even though it wasn't really my fault, guess who had to replace it? Came right out of my pocket because it cost less than my insurance deductible. It never occurred to me that my boss should eat the loss. Do you really think the Board of AT&T sits around the table, rubbing their hands together, saying, "Bwwahahahaha (evil laugh) just a few more destroyed dishes and we'll RULE THE WORLD!!! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!" I'm kinda glad AT&T is watching their bottom line for their stockholders... one of whom happens to be me.
Jerryobaby, smart response!
Just watch, AT&T and its competitors will start selling insurance services with their equipment... yet another opportunity for profit for big greedy corporations.
San Diego Fires & SPAM During the last year I have been receiving 400 to 600 SPAM emails per day sorted out by my SPAM software. On the third day of the San Diego fires, the vast majority of the SPAM stopped with now less than 20 SPAM emails per day! It appears that one or more households in San Diego were the source of the 400 to 600 "male enhancement" SPAM emails that I received daily.
You wanna hear an extreme story of greed? I live in Japan. Apparently, jumping in front of the trains is the preferred method of suicide over here, and that usually means a train delay of 45 minutes so they can clean up the mess. But get this: if a man commits suicide this way, the train company sends his family a whopping 5 figure bill for causing the delay to passengers, and for cleanup... Sickening, huh?
I'm glad i'm not an at&t customer!! Big companys like this don't care about anything or anyone except themselves! In a wild fire evac the last thing to worry about is a satellite dish or components! I hope more people take a hard look at AT&T before they would sign on with them...In this time of great lose you would think a big company like AT&T would show compassion?
AT&T should be a shamed of themselves for charging that couple for the damage to their equipment. I don't know how they sleep nights with a clear conscience. But, it's all about big business and how much money they can make off of people.
back in sept. i changed my AT&T service to a bundle package to include home phone, cell and internet. 3 months later i'm still fighting them for charging me twice for my cell phone. Talking to supervisors and always getting transfered to different department heads every day for the last 2 weeks hasn't resolved anything but to give me a migraine. It's time i tell AT&T to shove their contract up where the sun don't shine and take my money elsewhere.

The satellite dish receiver that was $300 probably belonged to Dishnetwork or Direct TV. They are very greedie and will always charge anything they can back to the customer. While I was employeed for Dishnetwork they always directed the cost of everything back to to the customer under any circamstance. Natural disasters and acts of nature were not covered under there service's and will always charge the customer for any damage. During hurricane kitrina they offered free dish replacement but, not all equipment covered under warrenty was replaced because of the act of nature. A majority of customers with damaged satallight receivers had to buy new ones with a 18 month contract or possibly switch to another company that offered free equipment.
