Do Not Call List Inching Closer to Permanence

Last month I reported about a legislative action involving making permanent the Do Not Call list, which millions signed up for during its 2003 launch... and which are now set to expire in 2008. The good news just got a bit better: The Bill introduced in September to make the Do Not Call registry a permanent registry has passed both House and Senate committee sessions, which would eliminate the five-year expiry after which registered numbers are dropped from the list.

The lone governmental holdout against making Do Not Call entries permanent has been the FTC, which has previously said that expiration dates were needed to account for people who change phone numbers or move. However, critics of that policy have rightly argued that disconnected and reassigned numbers are automatically purged from the list once a month. The "permanent" DNC list would up that pace to twice a month.

Even more good news: While the bill is working its way through Congress, the FTC has reversed itself by announcing that it will not purge expiring registrations until the matter is sorted out in Congress (and hopefully signed by the President). So, no need to rush out and re-register your phone numbers on the list now. With any luck you'll never have to register them again.

Still need to register? Visit donotcall.gov to get on the list.

To telemarketer (post 151) Comparing telemarmeting to a comercial is not correct. Comercials pay for the T.V./radio show and are sponsers. Now if you wish to pay for my phone, then your calls will be an acceptable hassle. For instance, many free web services require you to allow advertising banners as you use their services. I don,t mind this. I accept it as a price for the service rendered. I also worked 3rd shift for years with Momma at work on days and kids in school. Turning off the phone is not an option. My friends didn't call me and wake me up. My brother did it once and nursed a blackeye the next day. Stop bothering us.

I think I should have the right to say who I want calling my phone, either land line or cell. If I don't want someone calling soliciting me for any reason, it should be simple for me to just have my number blocked for all those things. After all it's my phone. If I watch TV and a commercial comes on I can mute it or do something else. If the phone rings, it's either listen to it ring for ever or pick it up and say no. I choose to not have to say anything by not having the phone ring at all.

Great idea! Now if they can just expand it so telemarketers can't 'sneak in the back door' by pretending to be survey takers, etc. perhaps we can take back dinnertime for our families.

If they pass it permitment would be great, and they need to fine them if they call. I'm on the list and still get calls.I have'nt changed my number in years and I've put my number on 3 time. If I sign up for stuff I never put my number on.I agree put all automated call on the list to.

How about I CHOOSE not to View a billboard advertisiment because I pay for my gas that I am using while driving my car...Or My company pays for it's phone line, (Overhead, big expense) Or I pay for my cable, I choose not to have commercials, I pay for my internet I choose not to be "pop up"ed or e-mails soliciting my account information on links that are deceptive. How about (There's much worse out there than a telemarketer) The powers that be are murderers everyday we are in another country (Iraq) the women that get raped (one every two minutes in this country alone) There are home invasions by much more vile people, people who torchure murder rape violence let's talk about theives...(My husband's business get stole from 2 times a week and the cops do nothing it's more important to write traffic infraction tickets.) These are the real issues. OH and let's not forget drugs, vandalism, all of these items are unsolicited acts. At least I can be honest and call my self a solicitor. Yes I want to sell you something that I feel you will need. Tv commercials are not sponors to shows, they pay for the advertisement you are watching like I pay for the phone line I am using. it's a 50/50 deal for ten seconds. I pay for my line, you pay for your line, let's get together and see if we can have a mutually beneficial relationship in business. I sit at a computer and do my job does not mean I do not earn my money it's a harder way to make a living than picking up a brick and slapping some cement on it to build the foundation of a crappy house. As for those of you who complain about the rebuttals, in order for the telemarketer to keep being paid and having a job it is mandatory. Telemarketers get Quality Assurance requirements. Our calls are listened to if we do not do our job properly, we do not have a job...period.
