Nothing says love like 20, 50, or 200 hours of video entertainment bundled up into a thick sheaf of DVDs and stuffed under the Christmas tree. Box sets are back, bigger than ever, this holiday season. And while you can buy I Dream of Jeannie: The Complete 4th Season or The History of Indiana University Basketball (yes, both are new on DVD), the technophile on your list is probably yearning for something a little different. Here are my top picks among newly released DVD box sets for giving to your favorite techie couch potato this holiday season.
Twin Peaks: The Definitive Gold Box Edition - Finally, the entire series run of cult classic Twin Peaks arrives on DVD, complete with the heretofore impossible-to-find pilot (without which you can't really watch the rest). Log lady, get out of my head!
Blade Runner: Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition - Includes the new "Final Cut" of perhaps the best sci-fi film ever made. Other extras include 80 minutes of deleted scenes, plus a collectible "Spinner" car replica and other goodies.
Get Smart: The Complete Collection - Would you believe they made 138 episodes of this? It's 25 DVDs of a guy talking into his shoe.
The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, Volume One - The Early Years - Get ready for Indy 4 by spending time with a pre-doctor Jones in this globetrotting TV series.
Superman: Ultimate Collector's Edition - Encased in a metal box, you get all five Superman films to date, including two cuts of Superman II and even the one with Nuclear Man.
Seinfeld Season 9 - The final season of Seinfeld finally comes to DVD, completing the series' release for home video. Every good geek feels a little like one of the four main characters sometime... maybe all four. Serenity now!
The X-Files: The Ultimate Collection - If the truth isn't in here, it simply doesn't exist; 61 discs take you through the entire, exhaustive, groundbreaking television series, enough to keep His Nerdliness busy for a full year.
My So-Called Life - The Complete Series - No, there's no aliens, hackers, or superheroes in this short-lived series, but it's got teen outcast angst in spades. If your giftee missed it on its initial release, he or she will love it now.
Heroes - Season One - From the look of things, this is as good as "Heroes" is going to get. Re-experience last year's best new show with this full set of episodes, including the unaired pilot.
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Complete Series - Like you need me to explain what this is. 176 episodes of the most popular of all the Trek franchises, celebrating the 20th anniversary of TNG on TV.
Stanley Kubrick - Warner Home Video Directors Series - Two sci-fi classics, "2001" and "A Clockwork Orange," can be found in this monstrous collection of Kubrick classics. One bummer: No "Dr. Strangelove."
Lost - The Complete Third Season - As "Lost" enters its fourth season, reliving the previous year is a good idea, if only to see the masterful gut punch of the season finale.
Sesame Street - Old School, Vol 1 (1969-1974) - Check out the street before it got cleaned up like Times Square and while Mr. Hooper was still alive.

I would totally spring for the Get Smart box (and Police Squad if it's out), but what about Doctor Who: The Complete Third Series? I'd like to get the ST:TNG box (along with Voyager and Enterprise) but the Star Trek boxes are more than I'd like to pay ($440 for TNG box, $700 for the Voyager box which comes out December 10th, $400 for Enterprise). I'd rather sheck out for individual seasons and the movies. Also, at $80-$90 each, the previous three seasons of Doctor Who are (relatively) cheaper than the Trek boxes.
