If you went shopping this weekend, you might have noticed that deep discounts were comparably lacking on new flat-panel TVs, at least compared to 2006. Instead, they've simply gotten bigger, part of manufacturers' strategies to avoid getting sucked into the huge discounts that siphoned away virtually all profits for the sets during last year's cost-obsessed holiday season.
Jumbo sets are flooding the market this year. Sony has 20 models measuring 40 inches or larger in LCD alone, now making up 68 percent of the company's TV lineup, according to the Wall Street Journal. And Sony, like everyone else, is hoping you'll go big: At $1,273, the average 40-inch TV offers substantially better profit margin than a $763 32-inch set (in part because there is less competition in bigger sets from budget brands like Olevia and Westinghouse). The goal is obviously that you'll get sucked into jumping up a size or two when you see the difference in the stores.
Still, prices are dropping, just not as much: 12 percent on average this year for LCD sets. As well, technology continues to improve, with focus on deeper blacks, faster response times, and even lighter and thinner screens. Interestingly, Sharp says it can now fit a 42-inch screen into its old 40-inch frame because there's less wasted space around the edges.
So... are you TV shopping this season? If so, what's the magic number (in inches, I mean) that's tickling your fancy?

Olevia and Sharp are crappy TVs, that's why you can get a deal on them. If you're getting an HDTV, why not do it right? Doing it right includes... 1080p tv (a good brand such as sony or samsung), surround sound, hd cable, and a blu ray player. 720p tv is a waste of money.
**A +40 inch 720p tv is a waste of money
Hmmm 720p is waste of money? Wonder why they keep making them. Hope people buying large 1080p ($1500+), blu ray ($400+), good surround ($500+), etc etc are paying in Cash (hard-earned money).
720p is a waste who wants an analog hdtv ???? just saw a 32" LG 1080p for 899.99 2 HDMI composite with an hd tuner built in. 720p is for people who dont want true hi def
I have seen the 120 mhz now on TV's do people feel that is worth it. I want the 1080p in 37 to 40 inch, but not sure if the 120 mhz is worth the extra $
I think that the bigger screens are better. You can also hook your e-mail to your television, so it is fun to watch your e-mail on a big television screen. I think that the price of the bigger televisions will eventually come down. Look at the calculators in the seventies. It used to cost 250 dollars to buy a calculator and all they could do was add and subtract.
If you are a AMEX card holder they are selling a limited number of Panasonic 42 inch plasma 1080P at 700 dollars, retail is 1999. This month only. If I was looking to buy I would definitely choose this deal.
42 or 46 inch 1080p LCD HDTV is definitely is the way to go, no matter what brand it is.
The reason the Sharp's are blowing out the door is approximately 1 out of 4 manufacturered have a visual banding problem that the manufacturer will NOT stand behind with a warranty fix. MOST online retrailers won't either, they say it's "as designed" since that is the manufacturer's stance as well. Dell won't replace either. Circuit City will. Best Buy won't. BUYER BEWARE!!!
We bought a 65" Toshiba HD Projection for $1699 at Circuit City. Great price! Great TV!
Interesting political expose from the 1st guy, want some cheese with that wine buddy. Sony is my brand and the bigger is the better.
With the new thin Bezels, we can now fit a 46" screen into the width of of the older 40 or 42" screen. I am hoping that they will make more of the smaller screens with 1080P. We typically watch from 2 viewing distances, 10 feet and 4 feet away. If Pioneer makes their 42" Kuro Elite w/1080P, I will buy it.
Just notice that the real price drop is in those less the 1080. They have to time the move on these so that they are gone by '09. Why would someone spend the $ for less than 1080? LCD or plasma is not so important as the resolution.
I just purchased a 37 JVC 1080p which is large enough for the room I have it in and the picture quality is excellent. A 40 inch or higher is fine for large rooms but the 37 inch is perfect for a smaller room and the price was only $899.99
I love that people who get their news from CNN only think they are educated in world and domestic affairs. "War on the middle class" is a liberal tag line for lazy people who live off of welfare. The reality is more people want to live in America than any other country. Keep the government out of our lives and pocket books. No i dont want to pay more taxes for illegals to get free healthcare. Get a job geraldsalata.
I want the biggest TV I can get so it makes my small penis look big when I film myself going bathroom
The only problem with all this Japanese technology is that just when we think we have something new and hot to sell the Japanese sit back and laugh and are about 5 years ahead of us not only in Computers and TV sets but in Cars. We taught em how to do it and now they are DOING IT TO US. I say God Bless em and maybe we will concentrate on QUALITY INSTEAD OF QUANTITY....
i just bought a 50 inch vizio plasma, for only 1000 bucks on black friday. i love seeing prices drop!
do u really get paid to do this?
