The Working Guy needs time off, I tell ya. Time away from the grind so that he can relax. While I've always been a gamer, this year has provided some of the best gaming titles I've ever seen. The market has noticed: Gaming is on a pace to easily hit a record sales level this year.
Without further ado, here are some of my best picks for the gamer on your holiday shopping list.Â
Special thanks to GameStop for providing review copies of many of these titles!
Super Mario Galaxy - Try as I might, I can't put this game down; it's definitely the best game of the year, at least for single-player action. Until now, the many sports-oriented games on the Wii, like Bowling and Tennis, have been amusing diversions, yet they offer very limited replay value after you get the hang of it. Super Mario Galaxy shows you exactly what the Wii was made for, with nearly endless variety in its gameplay that shows exactly what those motion-sensing controllers can do. Plus, it's just crazy fun. If you have a Wii, you must play this game.Â
Rock Band - A close second to Mario, Rock Band is the ultimate party game and fun on your own as well. I reviewed the game extensively at the link above.
Assassin's Creed - You don't get the chance to play many games set during the Crusades. In Assassin's Creed, you are deeply immersed in this rich and detailed environment to a degree that's rarely been seen before.
Guitar Hero III - Not the riot that Rock Band is, namely because the song selection just isn't as good. Maybe I'm just bummed that they turned Judy Nails from a punk chick into what looks like a pro wrestler. Still lots of fun if you're into the guitar genre.
BioShock - This gorgeous steampunk adventure is one of gaming's crowning achievements in artistry. If they gave out awards in art direction for video games, BioShock would win handily. Plus, this underwater actioner is tons of fun.
Halo 3 - Your gamer buddy is probably already bored of Halo by now, but on the off chance he hasn't finished the final story in the saga of the Master Chief, definitely get it for him. Used copies are already selling for less than $40, making it a bargain in an age of $60 game titles.
Mass Effect - Some are calling it the best game ever made for the Xbox 360, a sci-fi stunner that has you and a squad of two pals on a quest to, what else, save the universe.
Smarty Pants - A fun Wii diversion in the form of a trivia game. Nice for families, as you can vary the questions by age, even if you're playing competitively.

Call Of Duty 4 Should Be At The Top Of The List. By Far The Best Game Ever!!! Halo 3 never had a chance.
ok heres a funny joke im going to make about rock band: "so how am I suppose to sing, play a guitar, a bass, and a drum all at once its basically impossible!!! Im like screaming into this microphone while fingering my guitar and WOOPS darn! forgot all about the drums, so i pick up the sticks and start drumming and i try to flick the guitar strings with the drum sticks while screaming into this microphone, what a waste of money i just spent." See the only reason Rock Band is good is if you have friends come over, which I cant, or if you have siblings, mine r 33 and 30, and my parents dont play games with me... so its just me alone, doing all these at once... wow...
This guide is crap. Everyone knows PC is the new "console". So I see you left out World of Warcraft because it's far too superior for your typical console to run. Invest in a computer morons. You can do homework, shop, check the news and weather, play your video games and more on it. The upside isnt even that. You dont have to replace it every 2 years to be up-to-date for playing new games. Maybe just an inexpensive piece or two for christmas. Think about it.
hello Mr. Null ur very cool yay yay yay yay yay yay yay yay ur athsome
Missing a FPS better than Halo 3 and Bioshock... Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare...by far the best fps this year
Those are awesome games except for Smarty Pants.
YOu fail to put Call of Duty 4 modern warfare. Game of the year. One of the best games to come out this year. And it makes a great gift to anyone who doesn't own it already.
Rachet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction should easily be on this list. It's imaginative, clever and funny - not just a lame shooter. It's true that this list is totally ignorant of PS games - Mr Null isn't very well-rounded - probably one of those religious zealot types with an agenda...
Good List, But where is Madden or NBA 08?
HALO 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is da bomb catch me online and send me friend request at jesusboy ARTEMI
I love Mario
i like...corn =]
I've found that by including lists comprised of multiple platforms, responses tend to be more positive.
writer hog.
Good list. Agree completely.
This is funny : if you read his review for Rock this gus says "I reviewed the game extensively at the link above." but if you click on the link he then states "I've had only a LIMITED TIME with my mitts on Rock Band... ...and NOT NEARLY ENOUGH for a complete and comprehensive review, but since it arrives on store shelves tomorrow I wanted to offer some perspectives on the game, at least so far. TOP NOTCH research and reporting. It's obvious this guy doesn't know jack.
super mario is awesome
Um, yeah...you're missing one big game there, buddy. And being that I work for a video game retailer, I should know and this does call for caps: CALL OF DUTY !!!!!!!!!
Hey Null, What about Call of Duty 4, ya D-bag
