The Working Guy needs time off, I tell ya. Time away from the grind so that he can relax. While I've always been a gamer, this year has provided some of the best gaming titles I've ever seen. The market has noticed: Gaming is on a pace to easily hit a record sales level this year.

Without further ado, here are some of my best picks for the gamer on your holiday shopping list.

Special thanks to GameStop for providing review copies of many of these titles!

Super Mario Galaxy - Try as I might, I can't put this game down; it's definitely the best game of the year, at least for single-player action. Until now, the many sports-oriented games on the Wii, like Bowling and Tennis, have been amusing diversions, yet they offer very limited replay value after you get the hang of it. Super Mario Galaxy shows you exactly what the Wii was made for, with nearly endless variety in its gameplay that shows exactly what those motion-sensing controllers can do. Plus, it's just crazy fun. If you have a Wii, you must play this game.

Rock Band - A close second to Mario, Rock Band is the ultimate party game and fun on your own as well. I reviewed the game extensively at the link above.

Assassin's Creed - You don't get the chance to play many games set during the Crusades. In Assassin's Creed, you are deeply immersed in this rich and detailed environment to a degree that's rarely been seen before.

Guitar Hero III - Not the riot that Rock Band is, namely because the song selection just isn't as good. Maybe I'm just bummed that they turned Judy Nails from a punk chick into what looks like a pro wrestler. Still lots of fun if you're into the guitar genre.

BioShock - This gorgeous steampunk adventure is one of gaming's crowning achievements in artistry. If they gave out awards in art direction for video games, BioShock would win handily. Plus, this underwater actioner is tons of fun.

Halo 3 - Your gamer buddy is probably already bored of Halo by now, but on the off chance he hasn't finished the final story in the saga of the Master Chief, definitely get it for him. Used copies are already selling for less than $40, making it a bargain in an age of $60 game titles.

Mass Effect - Some are calling it the best game ever made for the Xbox 360, a sci-fi stunner that has you and a squad of two pals on a quest to, what else, save the universe.

Smarty Pants - A fun Wii diversion in the form of a trivia game. Nice for families, as you can vary the questions by age, even if you're playing competitively.

I'm not so sure about Assassin's Creed. The controls for the game are solid but the story-based play is quite lacking. Nice list regardless.

this is a very lump sided list wheres the PS2, PS3 and PSP games, the fact that you put a dud like Halo 3 on your list says a lot. I am no fan of Xbox I will admit that but even hardcore players of the series were VERY VERY dissappointed by it. You fail to mention Ratchet and Clank Future Tools Of Desruction which is a great game, what about Uncharted Drakes Fortune. Next time I suggest a sample of ALL systems not just a bunch of games on the Wii and Xbox that happen to be cross platform to the PS3 and don't forget the handhelds. and also unless people have been hiding in a cave they know about the music games the bad singing coming from the game sections at Bestbuys everywhere is more than enough to tell us.

"Used copies are already selling for less than $40, making it a bargain in an age of $60 game titles" where? Gamestop? I don't think so.

As a major fan of the Guitar Hero games, I couldn't agree more that GH3 should be on this year's list. I'm still awaiting the arrival of my Rockband game - being a drummer I couldn't resist! I'd love to see them branch off and do a Drum Hero series so I can become even more obsessed.

The guy that made the statement about Halo 3 being no good is nuts. The only problem about that game was it didn't come with alot of maps for online play. They are comming out with etra maps nest week.

Uhhhh.... whoever agrees with this list has no idea whats going on. And/or is not very aware of games at all. BioShock and Mass Effect and Rock Band are worth it on there. But Assassins Creed? I played that for half an hour and it got boring already. What about games like... Half Life 2 Orange Box, you know, it has 4 games and they are around 90 (and above) on MetaCritic. Or Crysis, a game with actual thought and technicality put into it. Not just some repeat slapped together POS like Super Mario Galaxy.... Also I sure wonder why there already are a lot of used 40$ copies of Guitar Hero 3..... hmmm maybe cause its just the same thing as Guitar Hero 2?

Nice list, I especially like that you put Halo 3 on the list. I highly reccomend it as well. It's easily the best game in a long while.

  • 22 Posted by shiggymoto on Thu Sep 3, 2009 9:19PM EDT Report Abuse

How about the best fps this year and probably even next year? How about Call of Duty 4? You mention a bunch of games which are duds, and a lot of games that people have played or have heard of from friends so far. This is hands down one of the stupidest lists to date since you don't even touch the Playstation camp or hand held market. Stupid article which literally wasted 5 minutes of life. Thank you Yahoo! again for publishing an article this vein, and simplistic. You might as well wave a flag and say, we love everything 360, therefore you should buy it. How about you make this the microsoft tech section? Or perhaps your editor shouldn't allow such stupid articles make it into the main page.

What about call of duty 4? That is one of the best games ever and defenitly a contender for game of the year.
