Well, it's not as exciting as the October rumors, but Boy Genius's sneak peek of Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard does look to offer some modest interface tweaks, as well as some much-needed upgrades to the core OS.

You can check out the screenshot gallery here (there are 100 shots in total).

Key upgrades include:

  • A redesigned home screen that gives you easier access to commonly used phone/text features
  • The ability to cut and paste (currently relegated to the Windows Mobile Professional edition only)
  • SMS messages can now appear as threaded conversations
  • Internet Explorer offers zoom features as well as the ability to set a home page
Sure, none of it is earth-sharking (and much is present in the Pro version of Windows Mobile already), but it's a nice set of refinements to a fairly mature operating system. Of course, most smartphones I see tend to have Windows Mobile Professional, not Standard, installed. I'm looking forward to seeing what advances the next version of WM Pro has in store for us... and when/if it will ever show up in devices.
