CompUSA Shutting Down All Stores

Dang, how's this for a Christmas present? Once-mighty computer retailer CompUSA, now owned by a closing-time restructuring firm, will be shuttering all of its retail outlets nationwide after the holidays.

CompUSA already shut down half of its remaining stores this spring, leaving about 100 left open. Those stores, if you can find them, are probably already offering "going out of business" bargains on all remaining inventory. Snag the deals while you can.

The CompUSA.com web site is also for sale, though right now there's no indication that there's anything amiss at the company at all. In poking around, there are some interesting bargains to be had, including this three-PC version of Norton Antivirus 2008, free after rebate. That said, it would be understandable if you chose to shy away from spending a lot of money on an online purchase from the site right now.

Unless you're interested in the specifics of who will be on the company's executive team, there's not much more to this story that you'll find interesting. But let's all offer a moment of silence for one of the former giants of the PC retail biz. You shall be missed!

compUSA going out of business? I thought this happened 5 years ago. Never saw any good deals or any particular motivation to enter their stores after my first and last visit somewhere in the 1980s.

I knew it was going to happen, when my store closed. It just goes to show you that, if you have non sales people running a company, that it will fail.

depech69mode you are wrong! The warranty is sold and backed by Compusa. It has nothing to do with Apple. I sent a email to the Florida Attorney General and was advised they are looking into it.

I remember when they (somehow) eliminated all of the other stores (remember egghead stores?) and then their customer service turned absolutely horribly poor. Its a classic example of what happens when there is no competition.

I remember applying for a job there years ago and the whole experience was pretty special :-)

Glad they're gone. serve's them right. Poor service in their stores, high prices, and returning something costs you 15% for restocking.

I never got to shop at CompUSA but the restocking fee applies to Best Buy as well and I will never do business there again. I bought a laptop from there and it was sooo slow that I took it back the next day and was charged $85 for restocking. No more Best Buy for me.

About the ipod warranty. Normally apple product warranties are called apple care and covered by apple. If that's what you have, you should be o.k. Second - Closing? No surprise! Predicted CompUSA soon-to-close in Oct. when I was charged a restocking fee on a nav/gps return after being told at time of purchase if there would be a restocking fee if returned (no policy was clearly posted which prompted my question and would not have purchased otherwise). Was told there would be none if returned within 14 days. Believed him since I had never been charged on any of the few returned items before in the past -- even a computer. Going to manager, then corporate, then attorney general's office didn't help. A company who values a $25 restocking fee over losing a long-term customer who has purchased thousands in products from them is a good indicator they are truly in big financial trouble!

I've always had good luck with CompUSA - and was very unhappy when the only local one closed. However, I'm beginning to see why they are going - after reading the comments and looking for a LaCie external hard drive on their website. They are asking at least $25 more than the Lacie website wants, and they are only offering a 1-year warranty when LaCie says they come with a 2-year warranty.

Man,i bought my first pc from them back in late 1999. An hp desktop. It had a 10 gig harddrive and 64 megs of ram. A pentium celeron 667 processor with windows 98 second edition. Man those were the good old days. The internet was so new and fun to explore. I will miss that store, even though i haven't bought anything from them in years.

I find the guy who complained that they wouldn't price match on day 15 when their warranty explicitly says 14 days to be a complete moron. I am completely ambivalent. I never went in there unless they had a really good sale, which was not very often. They didn't compete with BB or Circuit City at all. And usually their sale prices were good because of a mail in rebate rather than just a good old amount off like BB does. It was nice to have another option.

CompUSA was owned by the richest man in the world Carlos Slim. It is finally good to see that his unethical business practices that he uses to destroy Mexico didn't work in the United States. This should teach him a lesson that American consumers aren't as gullible as Mexican consumers. STAY AWAY from the USA Carlos Slim. CompUSA was a disaster of a business and I am surprised that it lasted as long as it did. I would like to see the SEC investigate the thieving Carlos Slim since I am sure he has done something illegal with CompUSA.

I used to shop at CompUSA until they wouldn't replace a defective product. I never went back.

I went to buy a parallel cable, "A parallel cable!" and they wanted $25 for a 6 footer!. What a rip, I went to "Wang Chungs Computer and Laundry" and bought a 10 footer for $4. Everthing's was a rip at Compusa. Very glad there gone. “Everyday is a great day at CompUSA" when they don't exist

10 years ago I left my PowerMac at CompUSA for an internal modem replacement (warrantee). After 2 weeks I was told they were waiting for the part from Apple. I called Apple and was told that until CompUSA paid their past due bill, no more parts. I went to pick up my computer and was told that I would have to pay for the part when it came in. I asked the manager when did she think the part would be in. She didn't know. I took my computer and said "you'll never see me, again" and they didn't.

With one less to compete the prices are sure to rise.

I find the list of comments remarkable because they sum up exactly my experiences at Circuit City. I fully expect them to go online-only if not completely out of business within the next 2 years. To wit: invariably higher prices, poor customer service, and a consistently ridiculous checkout process. Best Buy is no picnic, their sales staff are also clueless but for a 'bricks and mortar' store their prices are reasonable. To the extended warranty bashers - I tend to ignore them but for those not tech savvy enough to do minor PC work, an extended warranty is not always bad. I bought one for my projection TV and the 2 replacement bulbs paid for that warranty with room to spare.
