Vista's upcoming service pack gets all the ink, but Office 2007, which shipped at almost the same time as Vista, has had a nice update in the works as well. Office 2007 Service Pack 1 is now available for download. It's the real deal, not a beta, so grab it while it's hot.

The 218MB Service Pack can be downloaded from this site today. It will reportedly appear as part of the regular Windows Update system in a few months.

What's in the fix?

  • Numerous security updates throughout the suite
  • A variety of stability (general bug) fixes, including:
    • A fix to the Excel 2007 "65,535" error
    • Several Outlook fixes, including some involving previewing HTML messages, forwarding plain text messages with attachments, and several crash situations
    • Improved web integration with PowerPoint
    • Some minor fixes with Word 2007, including better handling of table of contents creation and embedded objects inside of other objects
  • Performance is improved, particularly when dealing with large files (including mail databases)
  • Some accessibility issues have been fixed: Icons have been tweaked so that red/green color blind people can distinguish between available/busy notifications at a glance, for example

You can read the full list of updates in this white paper (Word 2007 link).

I've had no problems with the installation and can't see any reason not to install it. Grab it now before the servers bog down!

Oh, finally, a fix to that doggone Excel bug! I had to stop using Office 2007 because of that bug!
