Wow, talk about a sea change. Last time I saw these statistics (about two years ago), only about 5 percent of the United States had dumped its landline telephone altogether in favor of going cell-phone-only. Today, that number has jumped to 13.6 percent, or about one in eight households cutting the cord for good.
Oddly, these stats come from the National Health Interview Survey, conducted earlier this year, which offered such weird observations as the fact that those without a landline were more likely to be smokers and were twice as likely to be "binge drinkers."
That likely has to do with the personality profile of the typical cord-cutter: A whopping 55 percent of adults living with "unrelated roommates" and 31 percent of adults aged 25 to 29 had no landline. In other words, college kids and single, recent graduates make up the majority of those without a wired phone. That may explain why cell-only users are twice as likely to have no health insurance while also reporting they were in "excellent to very good" health; they're simply younger.
As with many tech trends, pint-sized buyers are clearly giving this movement its legs, and it will only continue to snowball as they get older. Of people I know who ditched the landline, none has ever later changed their mind and decided to get rewired. Watch for old-school telephone carriers to get increasingly desperate as this trend continues.

I love it. I cut the big Bells off years ago. I use a combination of pre-paid cell ($6.00/month) and VOIP (vonage) through cable modem. I figure I'm always going to have internet service anyway (priorities), I should just use voip for my phone system. I plugged the vonage box into the home telephone wiring and all the phone extensions work fine and it looks and feels like a real land-line. If the internet is down, all calls forward to my cell phone. Life couldn't be better. More money for the smokes and drinks.
I still like the land line because you can answer a phone from different rooms or the garage and not look for your cell phone where it is charging so it wont go dead. Cell phones and wiFi can be monitored if you have the right equipment. Cell phone users get in more accidents and develope bad habits in public like interupting in social events to answer or check email, text messages.
We ditched the land line about 3 months ago yet maintained our DSL. It's called a Dry Loop (ATT lingo) or Naked DSL (propeller head lingo). Saving $600 a year and not getting anymore phone solicitaions is sooooo nice!
Well... the thing about children is that they tend to lose things no matter HOW important. The land line is much better. But there is no one that young in the house so we are just getting cell-phones. My Mom went nuts with all of the credit cards, so now it's difficult to sleep past 7 a.m. with that darn ringing in my ears. Good riddance, land lines.
I discarded my landline only a few weeks ago, and i don't miss it a bit. Only people who call there are telemarketers.
Dropped the landline after I got a notice that it would cost an extra $5 per month for the "privlige" of being provided service as I used a prepaid calling card for LD charges. Land line went from $10 per month to $35 for just basic service. Cell phone was cheaper. Good by land line. Being an older person, hated to do it having grown up with Ma Bell but must admit cell phone is much nicer and works no matter where I am.
you can use cable for you computer service i havent had a land line in 6 years my cable company offers a great service. and if you have a tmobile phone and its a hot spot phone you can get that service in your home and now your cell is your land line when your in the house. Now days people are to busy to have land lines and these companys charge you for every thing.
I tried to ditch me land line with AT&T, they give me a promotion for six months with land line, 3.0 dsl, unlimited long, local calling with id,3way for $35 a month. I was paying $95 a mo. for almost the same pkg.
I am a 25 yr old female and i ditched landlines about 3 years ago. But just for the record i neither smoke nor binge drink, and i have excellent health insurance!!

PWM- You can get ADT without a landline although there are some extra charges involved. ADT offers this type of service just for folks without a land line.
