Hey, I don't know what's going to happen next year any more than you do... but I have a hunch about a few things. Here's my take on what we'll see from the tech world over the next 12 months, for good and for bad.
iPhone 2.0 - A new iPhone is coming, and probably sooner than you think. I am guessing it'll be announced officially at Macworld in January, just like last year, with release in the summer. What will it do? 3G and GPS, for starters. What you do with your old iPhone (with another year on the contract) is another question.
Android Arrives - Google's Android open source phone OS will ship to incredibly positive reviews, but only a scant few handsets will be available with it. Carriers won't be thrilled about Google poking around in their backyard (see next prediction) and will see this as a way to subtly punish Google.
Google Smacked Down at 700MHz - Google will bid for the coveted 700MHz wireless spectrum but will get beat out by one of the major carriers, which will snap it up... and do nothing with it.
No End in Sight to the High-Def War - And on it goes, as prices on HD DVD and Blu-ray players stabilize at $199 or so. The war, in fact, will really start to heat up in 2008. Everything we've seen so far is just prologue.
Intel Continues to Dominate PCs - AMD will bring some new and compelling CPU offerings to the table, but Intel's momentum just won't be stoppable as it keeps rolling over the competition in both desktop and laptop computers. Buying a new high-end computer next year will probably still mean buying Intel.
A Shift from Magnetic Storage - 2008 will bring solid-state hard drives (based on flash memory instead of spinning disks) as a reality for many. Now available at 64GB, affordable, smaller solid-state disks will hit the mainstream in a big way, leading to more crash-resistant laptops.
No New TV Tech - Laser, SED, OLED... all of these technologies will continue on the sidelines as LCD and, yes, plasma, keep duking it out with bigger, brighter, and cheaper screens.
802.11n Finally Arrives - Years in the making, a new Wi-Fi standard will finally be ratified, approved, and everything. That said, it won't offer much that the draft N standards don't already do.
Wii Momentum Starts to Slow Down - You may finally even be able to buy one next Christmas!
PS3 Remains in Last - Unless Sony makes extensive price cuts to the PS3, it won't pick up the ground that many are expecting... and Sony is not a big price slasher. I'm not counting Sony down for the count, but I predict that Xbox will continue to draw bigger buzz in '08 than the PlayStation.
Superfast Internet Starts Arriving - We're seeing hints of it now, but ISPs will start ramping up to faster and faster offerings. Comcast is talking about 160Mbps service... of course, that doesn't mean it'll be available where you live.
You'll Finally Switch to Vista - Microsoft has been wearing you down all this time. Frankly, it's just inevitable at this point, unless you break down and buy a Mac.

Okay I'll add my own Predictions for 2008... Companies will scramble to add an ever increasing array of new services for mobile users... things like on line photo-editing for cell phones... the new standard in web coding will move from asp to php...not that that hasn't already happened...but we'll see a greater push towards Open-source as more become aware how far that project has come in the past couple years... Greater strides will be taken in server side Apps and streaming Video will become necessary for all of the entertainment companies to stay competitive
"You'll Finally Switch to Vista" why should I? because over 90% of computers are running windows? So what! I'm thinking of switching completely to Linux.I don't need to buy a more powerfull computer and pay licenses to do the same stuff.
No robot president for 2008? Oh wait, we already had Gore2.0 in 2000...
look out world. im inventing the wiresless phone charger.
how long till the next big thing in hi-def tv? 1080p, 120Hz refresh rate are the top dog. how long till that is just 2nd best. i like the fact that the prices have come down even on very good sets, however, it seems that 1080p has been top for a while and something better is just around the corner. anyone who really knows?
XP will never bow to Vista in it's current incarnation... the best thing Microsoft could do would be to release a new version of XP and bury the Vista name in the same vault that holds ME.
iPhone 2.0 duh, even Steve Jobs mentioned that in a keynote, not really a reach there. The HD media war does still go on in '08 but with a leader being Blu-Ray. (more on why later) HD-DVD will lose some studios due to the emerging front-runner (blu-ray). No new TV tech except we'll start to see the emergence of the newest in HD resolution, we'll start to see the sets that support the 1440p standard, and although they'll be expensive, we'll have nothing that will really drive the sales of those units, as the media/content at that resolution will be hard to find. Wii momentum for the first half of the year continues as it is, people are still clamoring for the last gen (technologically speaking) system and stores still can't keep them in stock, the 2nd half of the year, however the market on these machines dries up as the owners start complaining about the fact that other than gimmicky controls there's nothing driving games to the Wii. The Wii's days are already numbered, there is nothing going to move hardcore games to a Wii, the Wii has similar technical specifications as a PS2, and that's why the Wii's releases are what the PS2 gets, so gets the Wii. The PS3 will remain in 3rd most likely, however, more people will realize that the PS3 gaming system is actually cheaper (in the long run) than the Xbox 360. Developers are already shifting their focus as the PS3 becomes the platform they develop for first then port the game to the 360, the 360's lead starts to diminish, and in fact gets really small at the end of '08. Not to mention Microsoft will continue to experience hardware problems and face harsh criticism over it's 'Red Rings of Death' and 'Disc Scratching' problems. Sure superfast internet will be available in some areas, of course it will really cost you almost a mortgage payment a month for that service, but it will be available in a very small portion of the country.
You forgot to mention the fact that technogeeks will get fatter due to sitting at their computers and playing games all day.
Advances in display technology are going to be pushed even better with the introduction by big names like Hitachi for MLD displays. Multi Layer Display technology is going to change the definition of television. If the news from Hitachi, and Pure Depth is an indication 2008 TV Tech will be pushed to the next level.
When brawl comes out, the Wii will have its killer game. I still play melee once in a while.
We went to the store this past weekend and bought a Wii. 360 and PS3 are far too pricey and appeal to a smaller market compared to the Wii. I use to have an Xbox and I must say the Wii is far better in game play. There is only so much one can stomach with everybody claiming bigger and better graphics. It's like the mega pixel war in the digital camera world.
2 things. The Wii will continue to be more popular than Xbox because it appeals to many more people. Xbox appeals only to the hard core gamers, but the Wii to any person looking to have fun. They also have a few "must-have" games with the Zelda and Mario titles. Vista is going to crash and burn...it is already crashing right now. Mac sales will continue to explode, and everyone else, too stupid to innovate, will be left trying to develop the next "Apple Killer" and failing miserably.
I finally got worn down by Windows updates and failures and did purchase a MAC, which I am happily using without blue screens, lock-ups, excessive updates and all the other junk that comes with Windows. I was so happy in fact, that I purchased a Macbook Pro. I love them both and will probably never use a PC again. With that said, why not more about MACs?
199 for a blu ray??? thats insainely cheap
Vista crashed and burned. i bought a desktop earlier this month with Vista and hated it (almost as much as i hate MACs).. so i installed Linux.. since then, i installed linux on my other other desktop and laptop.. best move of my life ever. my prediction for 08.. people will realize how much better linux is and actually start to use it.. best of all FREE SOFTWARE!!
The only thing keeping the Wii down right now is their inability to keep up with demand. Demand continues to be filled by new units that are shipping, and if they keep tweaking the production up, it will eventually hit a point where they are selling as many units as people are interested in buying. Then new colors will be offered. But anyone who thinks Nintendo's just going to take a fall hasn't noticed that the only system that's outselling the Wii is the DS, and then by a very wide margin. Both systems feature unique gameplay options, so both systems are attracting games that are necessarily platform-specific. 3rd party devs are flocking back after Nintendo chased them away leading into the N64, and once they start to get a handle on how to utilize the new control interface, they'll find that graphically, it's much less costly to program for the Wii than it is for either of the two HD-gaming platforms. The 360 will likely continue to dominate the hard-core gaming market...provided they get their act together regarding hardware issues. Insider info has recently slipped out detailing their shody "refurb" work, and pretty much confirmed everyone's suspicions and more. The PS3 _will_ catch on. Eventually. Once they bring the price down from a system that everyone wishes they could own, to one that everyone can afford to own. They just won't dominate any aspect of the market this time around. But ravaging the price on the PS3 might be enough of a kick to win the HD Format War...for that small handful of people who actually care about it right now, and believe that the DVD is already dead. As for Intel and Vista, if AMD goes belly up before I'm due for a new computer, I suppose I'll be forced to buy an Intel box. For Vista, I don't have any intention of "upgrading" from XP unless the upcoming LEGO Batman and LEGO Indiana Jones games aren't XP-compatible.
