Man Gets an $85,000 Cell Phone Bill for Modem Use

We've seen $3,000 cell phone bills. We've seen $10,000 cell phone bills. But now we've got a bill that's approaching six figures, as a Canadian man has been hit with an $85,000 invoice.

And no, it's not a computer error.

Piotr Staniaszek had been using his cell phone as a modem for his computer, thinking he was covered under his $10-a-month unlimited mobile browser plan from Canadian telco Bell Mobility. He actually caught the bill at $65,000. When he called to complain, he was told that it had hit $85,000 for the use since the bill was mailed.

The likely problem is that Staniaszek got understandably confused about what his recently signed $10 data plan covered. Such plans often cover data use on the phone itself (such as texting or using the built-in browser on the phone), but not when it's used as a modem with a PC. (Without going into extreme detail, the connection types are different, and the phone company can tell the difference between the two types of traffic.) Bell Mobility has dropped the bill to just $3,243, but Staniaszek is still fighting it. (Of course.)

Staniaszek also notes that the phone company should have notified him when charges started to spiral out of control; previously he'd gotten a call when he racked up a mere $100 in charges on his old data plan. Now his bill climbs into the thousands and no one bats an eye. I'd be peeved, too.

Remember that all cell phone plans are not created equally, and "data" has numerous definitions. Before you connect your phone to your computer, make sure you understand the charges you're setting yourself up for, and check your usage on your phone company's website periodically (especially if you're using your phone for something new) so that you don't get slapped with any financial surprises.

Duh Homer...umm read your contract..or call and check?.. And do the math.. say its 40c/min, that is over 200,000mins??..for $10?.. gotta be nuts to fink dat?, he's a pilot, he can afford it

I think it ridiculous; that companies are allowed to have such charges in the first place. Additionally, their terms of contract needs to be in layman's language and not 10 pages long. They should also be required to "give examples" For examples: if you use your phone for Internet access 4 hours will cost you ____this amount. It's great there ARE so many informed consumers out there that go back and question these changes and take a stand.

One more thing I don't understand. How do you use your cell phone for modem use? I wouldn't trust that anyway lol. I have a cell phone and thats it, but I don't even have 100% trust in that.

Wow, the audacity of some wireless providers. Who could ever think a cell phone bill would ever spiral to the sum of a new Mercedes Benz S class or a home in some parts of the country. Gee Whiz

If you are savvy enough to connect the cell phone to your computer, and get it to work, one would think you would thoroughly check things out first. The time spent when connected from a data cable to a cell phone are airtime minutes. When the phone connects internally to the internet, emails are made, or text messages are sent and received from the phone itself is what is covered under the majority of data plans. Honestly the company has been more than gracious with crediting the bill. He owes it, and should pay it. If he does not he then deserves bad credit! In the end everyone will pay for his mistake. We all pay higher rates to make up for other people's stupidity!

No way ! someone should have contacted him the first time the customer went over limit. Yes! The service contract was tricky. Yes! He should pay what he sign up for nothing more. Only Bill Gates can get away with that lol.

Exactly! Someone should've been contacting Mr.Staniaszek about his outrageous phone bill! Wow, what a Corrupt company to allow that to happen to him. If that were me there'd be no way in heck I'd ever pay that! I'd do everything in my power to dispute that charge, especially if they mislead me. These company's always have a way to get rich off of people.

this is such a rip off with phone customers. they should have notified him after his monthly bill was doubled or tripled. what if khe had lost the phone? this would be a security measure. thee should be a security measure just like with credit card if this amount is able to achieve.

Hope the govenrment does get involved. For this type of billing abuse the government should charge the phone company 10,000 times the amount to the company as the company most likely makes 100,000 times as much money each year an a 10% equal proportional penality would stop this kind of abuse and misleading plans. The $85,000 is peanuts to the compqany but if you made the fine proportional to the other parties revenue a charge to the company of $850,000,000 might get some attention and a expedited correction!
