Panasonic Rolling Out 150-Inch Plasma at CES

It's about to become the worst-kept secret of next week's CES: Panasonic is rolling out an unthinkably large, 150-inch plasma television (yes, a plasma), massively eclipsing the current size leader, a 108-inch LCD from Sharp that was unveiled at CES last year.

Sure, we've all been expecting an even bigger television to set a record at CES (it happens every year), but at the bigger-than-100-inches level, things tend to increase in tiny increments. Case in point: In 2006, the biggest TV was 103 inches (pictured above; it's now on sale for $70,000). Predictions for 2008 had previously ranged around 110 or 115 inches. But 150? It looks like a typo, but it's completely real.

In addition to knocking you out with a television which is almost as big as an SUV, Panasonic is proving that plasma is not dead. In fact, it's apparently more alive than ever. Giant screens like this may be seem like mere one-upmanship over other manufacturers, but there's more to it than that: Big screens mean bigger glass, which creates a trickle-down effect for smaller sets (and by smaller, I mean sets you might actually purchase), making them in turn larger and less expensive, as the companies can carve more (and/or bigger) displays from a single pane. Sure, you might not really buy a 150-inch television, but you might get 200 bucks knocked off your 50-inch set instead.

And what of LCD? I haven't seen any early reports (yet), but it's certain that some monster sets will be on display. Will they approach the 150 inches that Panasonic is set to wow us with next week? I doubt it, but I'll be there to find out. And I have a camera.

there is no way there is any kind of picture clarity on a 150-inch plasma

I concur, I would say that the picture quility on a 150 inch TV leaves somthing to be desired. Although it would be intresting to see, I may have to get one for my living room...or not....

I was in Japan last year and on display was an 103" Panasonic plasma TV. I stood next to the TV and it was almost as tall as I was. The image clarity was outstanding.

I think I will wait another year or two and hopefully sets will increase in size!

Will this TV seriously be as big as an SUV? No, thanks. Even if it had good picture quality.

ok for all of you cheapo's there are inexpensive plasma's you dorks! try a 50in vizio for almost 1300 bucks on sale at your local circuit city stores. yeah it might look like crap but if cheap is what you want then that is gonna be the picture you get. And I know what a 58 inch plasma feels like and I could only imagine a 150. you would have to crane that thing into the house or get all of your drinking buddies to help (or the whole bar)

I just noticed that the picture they have is actually last year's puny little 103" set and that looks like it already dwarfs the guy next to it. The 150" must be the size of a small movie screen!

outstanding they should keep up the good r&d work. As long as they continue to push the envelope consumers will get the benefit.

The number 13 person making a comment on Vizio, obviously dosen't know anything about electronics at all!!! A friend of mine has 11 plasma televisions at her huge beach house about half of them are Sony the rest are Phillips. I have another firend who has 5 plasmas, again 2 Phillips, I cant think of the brand on the other one and 2 Vizios. And let me tell you that Vizio has as good a picture if NOT better than any of those that either one of them have including Sony and Phillips. Its not the brand its the image quality the Vizio I have has the 1080i and if you look at my screen or my one friend that has 2 of them they will make you drool all over yourself they are so clear and vivid. Go see for yourself and compare, but only compare 2 alike tvs. Example a Sony 1080i and then a Sanyo or Vizio 1080i. See for yourself!!

My family has a 60" Pioneer plasma screen in our living room, and we all love it. All the places we went to shop for tv's they all told us that pioneer has the best picture, and i would have to agree, so i hope that pioneer would roll out one of these babies, cuz im sure we would love to buy one like this!!

This is absolutely CRAZY! It shows how stupidity can prevail on reality about where this Earth is going to.....with all that waste that this, and the so called advanced technological countries are producing yearly, you can bet that the earth's life will be shorten by hundreds of years when they will have to find out how to safely dispose of such polluting machines in the future, instead of developing something useful for the survival of the World....

you have to be joking. yeah its expensive and larger than my apartment, but I would give blood for 2 years to own that technology wonder. besides my next arm is going to an OLED TV that gets elmers glued to the wall. Its only a matter of time now before i paste it to my car and make a knightRider-Mobile
