Cell Phone Use Is a Major Cause of Traffic

Never mind the accidents: People who chat on their cell phones while driving in heavy traffic are the very cause for some of the traffic we face.

A study from the University of Utah found that distractions caused by cell phone use equate to slower reaction times, which in turn causes a cascade effect that slows down all the cars behind them. Drivers talking on a phone were 20 percent less likely to change lanes and spent up to 50 seconds longer following slow-moving vehicles before changing lanes. Overall speed over the 9.2-mile-long test area was 2mph slower as well. (The study subjects used hands-free phones during their testing.)

The results may not sound like much, but with 1 out of 10 drivers talking on a cell phone, the cumulative effect can be huge. It's important also to note that slower driving does not equate to safer driving. Says the study leader, Dave Strayer, "If you are doing that so you can take your mind off the road and talk on the phone, that isn't safer."

So remember, next time you're stuck in traffic on the freeway, moaning about it on your cell phone to your gal pal in the other lane: The problem is you.

The only thing around here that cause traffic jams are construction sites and accidents. And the accidents are 99% of the time caused by the construction sites themselves - garbage on the ground, etc.

I agree with article; however I found it interesting that Christopher chose the phrase "galpal" to describe the person on the other end of the phone. Normally I am not the person pointing out sexist remarks, Hey I love being a bolnde female - I get away with more, but the inference that it is a female on the phone was interesting.

Let's hope that cell phone users are driving a little slower with more of a gap between themselves and vehicles in front. We know that the cell phone is a distraction that slows down reaction time. Driving faster and closer while on the cellphone is a traffic crash- and perhaps fatality - waiting to happen.

anything that distracts you from driving is a safety hazard. Cell phones are a distraction. End of story

Why won't they just stop nagging? We are all 21st century superhumans who can give our FULL ATTENTION to what is happening around our huge SUVs and AT THE SAME TIME give our FULL ATTENTION to our extremely-important-cannot-wait-until-I-get-home-or-pull-over conversation. And of course, as superhumans, we are very able to steer away from a sudden dangerous situation with only one hand or perhaps our thighs even, since our other hand may be holding our huge bucket of soda that we sip between bites of hamburger. Most civilized countries have banned the use of mobile phones while driving for a reason. Now companies are doing the same, since some States won't take the clue.

Well, not a real shocker, but a little suprising. I try not to talk on my phone, but I do slip sometimes.

I have counted the number of people on cell phones and it,s been 8 out of 10 drivers on the phone and the one in front was the problem, in thier own little world going 15 to 20 mph below the speed limit. this also causes "road rage" what should be done is get off the road if you want to talk, and it's time for the dmv to re-educate drivers. When I see a 16 yr old on the phone and driving with about 2 months of driving under thier belt something needs to be done. So if your call is so important pull over and talk, and thats the safest way to handle people talking on phone hands-free or not get off the phone and watch what your doing

I work for a major cell phone company, and our customers believe that cell phones are their entire life...And some of you need to be behind the ones talking on their cells, It's ridiculous, they slow down, speed up, drive slower thru intersections and traffic lights. When you finally can get around them, you can tell they have no idea what is going on around them. GET A LIFE, people and get off your cell phones while driving, you're holding those of us with a life, up in traffic. And slow drivers are just as dangerous as speed demons, I know that from experience.

I disagree with your assessment to a degree. We've done our own study. What we've found is that cell phone user with different hands-free devices have different responses. We've learned that those with dashboard devices spend their time speaking to the dashboard. Those with sunvisor devices spend their time speaking to the sunvisor. Because they're not heard by their caller/callee, they tend to focus their attention on the location of their cell phone or where the sound is coming from - thus taking their attention off the road. We have a patent pending product that can change where/how the cell phone is used in vehicles (hands-free of course). If you're interested in finding out more about our product and doing your own study on it, please email us at ronaele@handsfreecellphonewrap.com
