UPDATE: Paramount is denying the story.
How many "death blows" will it take for Blu-ray to finally win the format war against HD DVD? I've been hearing that phrase (and writing about it) since July 2007. Well here comes another one. Following in the footsteps of Warner Brothers' abandonment of the HD DVD format, reports are surfacing that Paramount is headed to Blu-ray as well.
This is huge news not just because it would leave just one major studio (Universal, plus the mini-major DreamWorks) producing HD DVD content. It would mark the first time in the high-def war that a studio has abandoned one exclusive format and switched to another. Warner was producing both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs and merely dropped the HD DVD ones. Paramount will have to switch entirely to Blu-ray, which it has not been producing up to now.
According to the Financial Times, Paramount has a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp allowing it to switch to Blu-ray in the event that Warner was to do so. And exercising that clause is what's about to happen. It's also theorized that DreamWorks will follow Paramount, since the studios are closely tied together.
Nothing's been announced yet, but this should be wrapped up in fairly short order. Stay tuned.

Blu Ray better start dropping their prices and get their stuff together if they want people to be buying their movies instead of regular dvds. Their players and discs are too expensive, and HD-DVD at least went into this with a good plan where as Blu-Ray got rushed out. HD-DVD from the start had ethernet for firmware updates while some Blu-Ray early adopters are now getting left in the dust and need to buy another expensive Blu-Ray player.
listen mr. null . . . wipe that smirk off your face . . . you . . . you overt blu-ray lover you!! luckily, i haven't taken the plunge into the hd dvd pool yet . . . (i was waiting for the prices of the players for both formats to drop and then buy one of each . . . but now i'll simply get a blu-ray player only . . .). if a movie that i want isn't available in blu-ray format (one that i can't live without, anyway) . . . i'll get the standard definition version . . . which is still pretty darn good quality! mr null . . . pat yourself on the back as you have influenced this consumer . . . not a simple task!
Its about darn time.
Well I can definitely see a HUGE class action lawsuit over these recent moves, especially considering how many HD players were sold this holiday season...

If this is true, I might seriously start looking at the purchase of either a PS3 or a stand alone Bluray player for my HD needs. I am a fan of HDDVD, my friends both have one and it is a great format. It looks as though if HDDVD doesnt make a big move quick. It wont matter if their players are as low as 49.99 if there arent any movies to buy.
