Comcast to Add 6,000 Movies to On-Demand Service

The picture gets murkier for the likes of Vudu, Netflix, and even the world of Blu-ray: Cable giant Comcast is gearing up to radically increase the amount of content it offers on its On Demand network, with a target of 6,000 movies a month available starting next year.

Comcast currently offers about 1,300 movies a month on the service, and "Project Infinity" is set to quadruple that. The plan is for half of the 6,000 movies to be available in high-definition as well.

The effort is part of a major move on Comcast's behalf to stem the loss of customers that it's been stricken with since last year, as viewers turn to the web and other services like satellite providers for entertainment content.

According to Reuters, Comcast is also upgrading download speeds on its movie delivery service. A full HD movie will be downloadable in just four minutes (vs. about six hours today).

Pricing and availability are not yet announced, and the rollout will, as usual, take place one region at a time. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

    whoo hoo! and guess what? i'm from philadelphia, where comcast headquarters is... so i hope to be getting all the new movies the soonest... and hopefully they will offer us the mpeg 4 boxes with more channels first... the blu-ray HD DVD format war left a sour taste in my mouth... I have both, and i'm sad about the HD DVD hatred all of a sudden... at least comcast is delivering... where HD and even Blu can't... on demand for free and I subscribe to all the movie channels too so there... even more for free :D

    Can you watch HD movies on Comcast with a regular cable box or do you need an HD ready box?

    Comcast is such garbage that they will find a way to screw it up.

    the on-demand never works right you really think they will get the HD on-demand to work? I'll stick with a physical that I can pull off the shelf at anytime and it will work perfectly every time. good luck with that comcast.
