Fujitsu Unveils Laptop Made of Corn

Corn-based plastics are nothing new (your takeout food box may be made out of them), but their use in consumer electronics is. Fujitsu recently took the bold step of using corn-based polymers, at least in part, in one laptop, the FMV-BIBLO NX95X/D. (Now that's a name!)

Available now, but only in Japan, the BIBLO uses 50 percent corn polymer in its case and 50 percent traditional petroleum plastic. Why not all corn? Corn-based plastics aren't rigid enough for laptop use, and a bigger problem, they aren't nearly as flame-retardant. Considering laptop batteries' propensity to burst into flames these days, I'd say that's a big issue.

I checked out the BIBLO in person, and if no one had told me it included corn-based plastics, I'd never have known the difference. The case feels just like any plastic laptop case, with none of the greasiness or odd sheen that some corn plastics exhibit. But the corn-based plastic components of the case break down in a matter of months, ultimately halving the amount of physical waste a trashed case would create. Pricing is virtually the same as that of traditional laptops.

Fujitsu wants to bring the technology here, but certification takes time, and that flame-retardance issue is a big deal for UL and ISO, which need to sign off on the machine before it arrives in the States.

So is it better for us to throw away a case that is partially (probably less than 25%) bio-degradable every 6-12 mths and buy a new replacement case. Than it is to just make one case that will not need replaced unless broken?

This is definitely a step in the right direction; I wi----- was available now as we're in the market for a new laptop.

No guys you're not getting it. The case doesn't degrade faster, he meant that when you decide to throw it down the trash, it will degrade much faster, not that you need a new one because it degrades over time.

We need corn for food. This will deteriorate in 6 months. Then we have to buy a new one. Let's find something else that will last as long as oil based plastics instead.

JLT is right, even though (s)he's yelling at us.

Thank you Jenllt21.........FINALLY someone else out there see's the same thing I've said for the last year. Our food prices have doubled since beef and it's by products like milk, butter, cheese, chickens and their by products like eggs, turkey, swine etc are all fed corn products. Dog foods also have CORN MEAL first their ingredient. It's bad enough the Government is paying farmers not to grow crops, but now they're supporting and subsidizing this E85 farce and hyping people to run out and buy hybrids. But now to use corn in plastics? Wait til you spend $8.00 a pound for ground beef or a McDonalds, $5.00 for a dozen eggs and $10. a pound for cheese. WAKE UP PEOPLE.

This seem really good. I think what the auther meant was that the case starts to break down when it is first put in the ground. At least no one has made any corny jokes yet. darn.

Green is not relevant, except to the small minded few who think our existence on this planet is for their own pompous ends. We don't need to be green, we don't need to save the earth. Just sit back and watch as the earth cleanses itself with hurricanes and monsoons. It can't be controlled, we are here because the earth allows it and when it gets fed up with us, it will run itself right into the moon and we'll all be crispy critters...but that won't happen for another 2 million years so it doesn't matter to me. FTW.

I wonder if it's safe around rats and mice. They love eating plastic stuff. Not saying that all people have a mice or rat problem in there homes. We make anything out of a food product which we don't eat.I see the corn for fuel as a great idea in hand.I see corn burning stoves out there, which help save money and burning wood cost a lot.But making a lap top computer out of corn is crazy, but a great idea if it's safe around family pets and kids.If this case is strong and it last long than am up for ideas like this.Always looking for a consumer product that will make a big deal.

First of all - the article says that it will BIODEGRADE in a matter of months, which means that in a matter of months, it will break the earth will break it down. This doesn't mean it will break down while you are using it... Second - this planet has more than enough space to produce the plant matter that the human race needs or could ever use. In fact, we're using every inch of available land (and a good portion of unavailable land) for feeding those cows you eat for dinner. I'll try to forget about the fact that your post didn't make much sense, jenllt21, and I'll agree with the fact that we need to clean up our acts as a whole. Gore and "Hollywood" have nothing to do with it, but green laptops are probably a good step in the right direction...

Using food to run our cars and make consumer products threatens our food supply or at least increases food for everyone. I would rather eat than drive.

Corn prices up 200% in the last year thanks to using corn for alternatives that are not really helping anything. Government subsidies to grow corn and other crops are not being grown. Prices are going up on everything thanks to this push for "green" products made from corn. You want to go green.. stop having kids..think of thier carbon footprint in the future...lol

i dont get all these "green" people with the idea of taking something from the earth to make it better. everything is now made from plants from dresses to hand bags... do they think trees grow in a day??? because of these "green" people we wont have any more food because we are wearing it and the earth will be hot as heck because there no trees anymore just growing shrubs.....

Jen, you might want to take your caps lock off. Yellowfish, WTF? Mice would be just as inclined to chew on a normal laptop as this one. You're self-contradictory throughout your post. AP, you're right, but we aren't using *every inch* of space. Most cows/animals are raised in the Midwest. rlbug, just... leave. Your IQ is subzero. ~Red

Jenllt21 and leecwos are right on. The way things are moving, global warming had better live up to it's potential, because the only way we'll be able grow all the corn we need is if the growing season on the Canadian prairie gets dramatically longer.

Hello Yahoo writer's. Are you guys paid based on how many people click on your article? Once again, I find you've come up with a MISLEADING HEADLINE. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAYING "LAPTOPS MADE OF CORN BASED PLASTICS" AND "LAPTOPS MADE OF CORN"!!! What next....our cars are made of CLIFFS?
