Ha! No Windows 7 in 2009

Sorry folks, but the news seemed a little too good to be true and the celebrations were a bit premature: Windows 7, Microsoft's follow-up to the overwhelmingly hated Windows Vista, probably won't arrive in 2009 as was previously rumored.

Says Microsoft: Windows 7 has not even begun development, and when it does, it will take three years to finish. The Inquirer is pegging a real release date at 2011... at the earliest. (Which is especially sad, since 2010 was the formerly rumored release date.)

Of course, that would be more in line with Microsoft's more recent, glacial development cycles (remember, it took six years to ship Vista after XP came out).

So what might Microsoft do for the rest of the decade? Some are guessing that 2009 might indeed bring a major OS update, but in the form of a biggish update to Vista. Ed Bott predicts a new IE, a toned-down User Account Control, and more media features for the OS. In other words: Windows Vista Service Pack 2.

As a side note, there's also the possiblity that neither scenario is true: All of these rumors are based on leaked roadmaps and at least one "official statement" about Windows 7, but in my years of dealing with the company, it has categorically chosen to refuse comment on future products, especially on something as distant and critical as a new operating system. The latest news is all based on this blog post at WinVistaClub, and you'll have to judge its veracity for yourself. That said, can I believe it will take five or six years to ship a new version of Windows? You bet.

I heard a comment from a Microsoft employee, that Vista wasn't ready to come out when it did, and Microsoft said that it wasn't ready. However, due to pressure from PC manufacturers (Dell, HP, etc) they wanted it to come out soon, since their sales were falling off due to not many people needing to upgrade their 3-4 year old systems. Hopefully, Microsoft won't cave this time, and make a more reliable, and better product than Vista currently is.

rogueist, that's terrible yet oddly amusing.. I should have figured it was too good to sound true. I really do hope that they implement all of the goodies that they took out in the Longhorn beta releases.

That gives the competition up to 4 years to make inroads into Microsoft dominance. And I'm not just talking to the Linux crowd... Are you listening, Apple?

I have loved vista since the day it came out. I have had it since last march, and have not had one problem. And have found it to be awsome, and the best OS ever (IMO).

alan_r_cam, I am sorry, but Steve cannot take your comments at this time. He is too busy trying to figure out where 1.2 million iPhones went, why people didn't immediately fall in love with the MacBook Air, how his dominance in online music has started to slip away, and how to avoid investor panic as Apple stocks plummet.

the thing that i like about windows over mac is the ability to control more. macs are for people who can't understand the complexities of an OS. this is why when a mac gets a virus, it's LIGHTS OUT! for windows, which is why most companies prefer to use them, you can do quite a bit of customization and have a great amount of control over it. the issue with windows is making that connection between the typical lazy user who doesn't like to learn anything and the OS as opposed to say a mac where there is a total disconnect between the user and the computer - you just use it and shut up! i think if microsoft wants to make a major hit with the consumer, they will have to realize that a typical computer user is generally ignorant but also pretty stupid (unwilling or incapable of learning). if microsoft could find a way to TIE IN all of the possibilities of a windows computer to allow the user to better control the inner workings. it could be a lot like a mission control or windows headquarters so that with all the hardware and software configurations, the user can make better adjustments. macs take all of the fun out of that level of customization which is why they barely have any real software outside of the ability to run windows software. but they've tapped into a niche that's long been mainstream - dumb and/or lazy people! microsoft has to tap into this market. i don't doubt that windows will be for the user with a brain - science, IT, etc. but what percent of the population actually thinks for themselves - much less than 50%; check the voting record in 2000 and 2004 in the US. in the end, it's not about making windows just user friendly but most importantly stupid-user friendly.

I think the columnist is poorly informed when he makes comments like "it took six years to ship Vista after XP came out". It didn't take 6 years to ship Vista, it took six years to develope the new OS. Evidently the writer has a poor grasp on what goes on in regards to software developement, otherwise he would have understood that Vista is built on a completely new source code. XP was built on the same source code as Windows 95. which was also used in Windows 98 and 2000. That said, it was easy for Microsoft to release a new OS every 2 or three years prior to Vista. Vista was built from scratch even though it doesn't look much different from XP. Also, the comment that Microsoft put out Vista prematurely due to pressure from HP and Dell is rubbish. MS pitched their new operating system earlier in this decade, then postponed Vista so many times, that eventually the rest of the PC industry had to call them on it. It wan't unreasonable for the industry to ask MS to deliver. And when Microsoft did announce a ship date, the minimum system requirements to run Vista were much higher than they had originally offered. Thus, new hardware configurations for the new "Vista-capable" systems had to be hastily drawn up, while existing products had to be hastily terminated. And then, Vista turned out to be a 32-bit operating system, not the 64-bit system that had been touted to go with the new generation of 64-bit processors. Vista was then dropped on an unprepared public and MS did little to market it properly to a lot of PC users who had never used any other OS other than XP. Quite simply, MS failed to deliver on what they had offered and there is not way they can put the onus on their clients by saying they were pressured. If anything, the PC industry has the right to ask Microsoft, "Dude, where's my OS?"

Instead of buying hardware to be able to run the newest bloated release, find software that can keep your current hardware usable. Make your computer personal to you. There are many Linux distributions that are extremely user friendly, less buggy, and more secure than the typical line of fluff that gets shipped with most new computers of any type. All things considered, I'd stop following the piper of M$ and start going with the penguin. Free your OS, your mind will follow....

I think I will just stick with my XP Media. It works simply and since I am not an advanced user, Vista can just be on someone elses putere

Almost forgot, Yahoo please don't sell to Microsoft. I really don't want to be asked if I'm allowed to view a homepage when I first click on the internet if he gets his hands on Yahoo. Bill Gates hasn't learned why users don't like MSN or why he lost the search engine market. Let him suffer because he will never get it what the public wants. Microsoft is about connected to what the public wants as George Bush.

this is a response to post 13, ayepapibx . . mac users are stupid and ignorant?? hmmmmmm . . . i have a masters degree and DO have the intellect to beome proficient at running windows . . . i choose not to . . . why? because i have something called a LIFE! (most mac users do!) we (mac users) recognize that a computer should merely compliment one's life and make it more enjoyable . . . we connect with each other, not our computers . . . i just bought an acura mdx because i know when i turn the key it's going to do everything i need it to do (no tweaking involved)!! i got the exact same response when i plugged in my 24 inch imac for the first time (it is beautiful!!) . . . i enjoy cooking, but none of my kitchen appliances need tweaking . . . are you getting the picture?? i also have a laptop that runs xp (tried vista, worthless) that i use for work because of certain software applications (other than that, it gathers dust) . . . ayepapibx, your post exemplifies the stereotypical computer geek . . . the one who rents a windowless studio apartment above a widow's garage . . . the guy who sits in front of six monitors on a floor covered with countless fast-food wrappers scattered about the floor . . . pretty accurate? you admit you connect with your computer???? that is disturbing in a techie perverted kind of way . . . am i lazy? . . . now i'm off to the gym and then a mountain bike ride with some friends . . . tonight . . . a quick bite with some other friends, then it's over to play with my nieces and nephews . . . not a computer in sight! what are your plans?

Why do all these computer topics turn into a Windows vs. Mac. vs. Linux debate? All three have their advantages and disadvantages. Windows is #1 simply because of ease of use. Most people do not want to learn Mac or Linux software. They are used to what they have. Now as for Vista, I've ran it since last March. Home Premium/Ultimate versions. Not one problem. But of course, I'm not the typical user either. I KNOW that 10 year old software will not work on a newly built OS. Blame the problems on the manufacturers. Yes, you read that right. THE MANUFACTURERS!!! They are just as much to blame, if not more than Microsoft because of driver issues, so on and so forth. Granted, alot of you don't like Vista for your own personal reasons. But don't go knocking down the door simply because you can't find something or have the inability to use Google for help. Yes, things were renamed, moved around, but that's nothing to cry about. Alot of you would rather sit and ----- and moan about how bad it is. The bandwagon is in town, let's jump on it. How many of you have actually used Vista (and I mean longer than a day or two)? Gave it a real trial run for a month or more? Only gripe I have about Vista is the slow file transfers, and maybe a little bit of resource hog. The transfers will eventually stall. Hope that is fixed in SP1 cuz the hotfix didn't help. I think I've gone long enough. Give Vista a fair trial, and you might not be impressed, but you will have a better understanding where those who don't have problems are coming from.

Now you would think that there would be a open doorway to profit and success for someone to promote their basement creation to the public and change the popular OS name for everyone? What gives here? It makes no sense at all to me, we have a world of educated people who know three words..Micro-Apple-linux..what or why? A car is a car, millions use the same road the difference is drivers choice, is not my computer my choice to travel the info highway in the style that fits me best? We need more options at various levels of cost and usages! But what do I know, I am just a housewife, mother, and consumer? haha

Why the Beef about "Vista". I've been running it since it first came out. Haven't had any problems, and for the most part compatibility (only had one program that would not install and run correctly).
