Myspace: It's the site that everybody loves to hate... and yet, who doesn't have an account there?

In response to Myspace's ugly ubiquity, blogger Simon Owens cheekily declared January 30 to be International Delete Your Myspace Account Day, and the movement has legs. Why, I'm sure dozens of people will log on to formally abandon their stale, heinously ugly Myspace pages today, for a variety of reasons. I find myself agreeing with Owens' assessment of the site in his top 10 reasons to quit the site. Primarily, his first: The only reason I ever login any more is to delete spam friend requests. I use LinkedIn and Facebook pretty much exclusively now.

Of course, Myspace has also been implicated in some pretty nasty news stories of late, too.

While I doubt International Delete Your Myspace Account Day will have much of a profound effect on the behemoth website, which now boasts over 200 million members, it is at least instructive about the dangers and headaches of signing up for every site under the sun, only to later have to undo it all. Getting out of Myspace isn't all that easy, either. Fortunately, Owens offers step by step instructions on how to do it here.

As for me, nah, I'm leaving my page intact. Partly because I need it for periodic stories I write about Myspace. Partly because cancelling the languishing account just isn't worth the trouble. The only thing worse than Myspace, it seems, is trying to leave it.

I think we should have an International Delete Your Blog Because You Are Too Lazy To Post Day. Too many blogs with 5 insipid posts on it. You put them in your RSS Feeder and nothing new comes through.

It's not MySpace's fault. It's the users on myspace... the site itself is an excellent idea, connect to your friends, bands, etc. It's the people who are idiots. They post half naked pictures of themselves, meet up with people they don't know, spam, etc. There are so many features now for security (since common sense seemed to be asking too much from people) that if anything happens to you because of myspace it is your own fault. I do wish however MySpace would do something to cut down the spam it is ridiculous. But still, it is the immature people ruining the site - they need to get blamed when they meet up with a stranger, not MySpace. How about we have 'International Take the Computers Away From People Who Are Too Stupid To Use Them Correctly Day'

Personally I prefer MySpace to Facebook - Facebook seem to be more invasive in the my life and lifestyle than I want a site to be - my Facebook page is empty. But I do use LinkedIn - thats a great business tool!

I never was interested in myspace, facebook or any of these types of sites. I have friends who have it and have tried to suck me in. But all i ever see them do online is myspace or facebook. Their pc's are always logged in to those sites. Sounds like a trap for bored people to me.
