Myspace: It's the site that everybody loves to hate... and yet, who doesn't have an account there?
In response to Myspace's ugly ubiquity, blogger Simon Owens cheekily declared January 30 to be International Delete Your Myspace Account Day, and the movement has legs. Why, I'm sure dozens of people will log on to formally abandon their stale, heinously ugly Myspace pages today, for a variety of reasons. I find myself agreeing with Owens' assessment of the site in his top 10 reasons to quit the site. Primarily, his first: The only reason I ever login any more is to delete spam friend requests. I use LinkedIn and Facebook pretty much exclusively now.
Of course, Myspace has also been implicated in some pretty nasty news stories of late, too.
While I doubt International Delete Your Myspace Account Day will have much of a profound effect on the behemoth website, which now boasts over 200 million members, it is at least instructive about the dangers and headaches of signing up for every site under the sun, only to later have to undo it all. Getting out of Myspace isn't all that easy, either. Fortunately, Owens offers step by step instructions on how to do it here.
As for me, nah, I'm leaving my page intact. Partly because I need it for periodic stories I write about Myspace. Partly because cancelling the languishing account just isn't worth the trouble. The only thing worse than Myspace, it seems, is trying to leave it.Â
Our team is on it and we should have everything back to normal shortly. Please come back soon.
