Just a small announcement here courtesy of Napster, which is really pulling out all the stops in an attempt to dethrone iTunes as the service of choice for online music purchases.
On Halloween, Napster launched a free download of the day: A real song from a real band, delivered in MP3 format with no restrictions. The only catch is that you have to register on the Napster service (which also lets you play any of the 2 million songs on the site up to three times each for free). Obviously the goal is to get you using the service and coming back every day, with the hopes that maybe someday you'll move up to a paid plan ($9.95 a month for desktop-bound music or $14.95 a month for a plan that lets you move music to an MP3 player).
So far, there are only three free selections, so it's hard to tell what the quality will be like going forward. So far the selections are from Iron Maiden, Tokyo Police Club, and Honeycut. So you get your old school metalĀ and indie rock, together for the first time. The daily download will be available for seven days at a time.
No news on how long this promo will continue, so hop on it while you can and let Napster know that you approve of free music!
Thanks, Lifehacker!
