How to Get a Human on the Phone

IVR, or Interactive Voice Response: It's the scourge of the western world. And even if you don't know it by its official name, you certainly deal with IVR, probably on a weekly basis. IVR is better known colloquially as voice mail jail, voice mail hell, and other, less savory terms that I can't publish in this column. But whatever you call it, everybody hates "talking to the computer."

But just because IVR exists doesn't mean you have to take it sitting down... for hours on end. If you know the right code, you can bypass the computer and get right to a real person (or at least the queue to wait for a real person) with no trouble at all.

GetHuman has compiled a list of all the methods, tricks, and tweaks you need to bypass IVR for 500 of the largest and most commonly called companies you're likely to deal with, from car companies and computer dealers to government agencies and more.

Even better: GetHuman provides the toll-free number (or a regular toll number, if no toll-free line is available) you need to dial, too. It's all on one big web page, HERE.

While you're on hold, don't miss GetHuman's tips on finding phone numbers (if they aren't listed on the main GetHuman site) and tips on how best to get to a human in general. Also worth reading: GetHuman's advice on how to deal with an operator you can't understand.

Finally, Bringo! is still around (though it hasn't been updated in a while). This service actually dials the number for you, then rings you back when you're no longer on hold. Worth a try if your arm is going numb.

My goodness - it takes forEVER to download the gethuman website ... longer than waiting for someone to talk to on the phone. They need to chop it up instead of one BIG download.

I Have found the easiesy way around computer answering systems is to hit the O "operator" key on the phone key pat. Most computersystems cannot handle this, or are programer to kick it to a live person.

I have found that if you cough, or clear your throat, the machine says "I'm sorry, I couldn't understand you. Please hold for a representative.." or some such. Has worked every time!

Argh! I HATE the automated menu. I called my bank one night because I had lost my ATM/debit card and was frantic to get it canceled before someone found it and emptied my account. Even though they specifically mentioned "Lost or stolen cards", I had to go through all the rotary options several times (and dial back in when some unexpectedly ended my call) to figure out which one would get me to the right extension for a live person. Most of them took me to a recording saying to call back in the morning, including the "operator" one. After about an hour, I finally got a real person who seemed oblivious to the fact that there was any problem whatsoever negotiating their menu system. EVERY voice menu system need to have an "emergency" button that connects you with a live person, even if you have to wait a bit to talk to them.

Oh, and my favorite "junk voice mail" was when my phone company changed its billing procedure and tried to call me to let me know that they hadn't received my payments. They left cryptic recorded messages about "important information about your account", but the number that you had to call went to an IVR that you didn't know what option to select. Even if you picked up the phone when they called, you still couldn't get to a person, just listen to the recording. Methinks that they need to cut into their windfall profits and put more SERVICE into "customer service".

The irony is that when I try to load gethuman.com, it takes forever!

I liked this information, and tried to share it with email with family and friends, and no matter what I did, it would not send, one at a time or several?????

I do not nor have I ever worked as a CSR however I always give the system a chance, usually works. Not always, sometimes I have to do the hit 00000 thing. Want a CSR to be nicer to you? Start out with a joke, if you get a laugh you'll get the best service ever!!!!

I just keep pressing 0 a few times, then I get connected to a real human. Pretty simple.

Yes I usually press the 0-00 deal as well, usually works, but if you get the totally automated ones that ask you questions, like banks and/or the phone companies, then when you are asked a question, I just say "fjiroejgkkdb" or gobledy goop, since the automation can't understand a thing I'm saying, they will finally just patch me in to a human. It's actually quite fun.

Here's a little more information to this discussion. Read this speech about finding skilled workers to handle the customer service calls in the US. Hmpf! http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080327/tc_nm/att_workforce_dc

My friend just emailed me about a new site at www.contacthelp.com that contains what looks like hundreds of companies, their phone numbers, instructions for reaching a live person, etc. You can even upload recordings of customer service calls and update/add listings as well. Similar to gethuman.com, but more features and easier to use. Very cool site!

This works great! I've used it a few times and if you do exactly what it tells you, you will get a live voice. This is the most useful list I've ever read!
