Fraudsters Use Tiny Credit Card Charges, Hoping You'll Miss Them

Recently we received a call from one of our credit card companies, informing us of possible fraudulent activity. Turns out that was exactly the case, only there was a twist: Most of the charges were for less than $20.

It's part of a new trend in credit card fraud: The charges are kept very small, mainly in the hopes that you simply won't notice them among larger charges on your credit card statement. This way, the fraudulent charger can keep billing you every month, as long as it goes unnoticed.

CA (formerly Computer Associates) notes that micro-fraud is a growing problem, as people have gotten more and more lax about checking their statements. I know mine sprawls into two pages every month, and it can be tiresome to hunt down phony charges on every statement. But you gotta do it, now more than ever.

What should you do if you find a phony micro-charge ($9.87 is, for some reason, a common figure) on your bill? CA offers the following advice (which I'm enhancing with my own tips, too):

  • Cancel your credit card and initiate a chargeback - You can do these together when you report the fraudulent charge. Your credit card company will automatically issue you a new one, and you can usually report fraud over the phone with no paperwork.
  • File a complaint with the FBI - This is not really appopriate if your card has been stolen and used by an individual; the FBI won't likely investigate such a small scale crime, but it will look into a company that's billing you illegally for its own profit. Report their name, phone number, charge amount, and any other information at the IC3.
  • Check your old statements - You may have been being charged for months without knowing it.
  • Scan your computer for viruses and spyware - Here's how.
  • Do NOT call and ask for a refund - Sure, they'll give you a refund... but this will also keep the authorities at bay and let the operation keep running against thousands of other people. Report them to Johnny Law!

    Good point on the server tips...I always make sure I cross out or write in "zero" if I leave a cash tip, and that it can't easily be altered if I leave the tip on the slip for the card. Guess no matter what or where, in todays world, one can never be too careful, or too educated!

    This is not only for your credit cards, this goes for your bank accounts also, especially now that we have electronic bill paying. Fraud is going on all over the place and if I was not watching my account all the time on line I would not have cought that one right away and have had it reversed. I think they thought I used electronic checks for my electronic payments but instead I use debit cards. I cought it immediately on line. You have to watch everything now days. My banked stopped it immediately.

    This problem not only appears on credit card statements, You will find the charges on your Bank statements. With so many using the credit and debit cards it's easy fraud. The charges start low, average $9.99. Your first method is to call the Bank and ask questions. The Bank will advise you to call the phone number on the stmt for this is beginning of the dispute. You have to prove this charge is not yours, the name of a merchant is not revealed completely. You call the phone number to find it's not in service. The second step is to stop the credit/debit card. The Banks easy responce "they cannot close the account because there is activity coming through". On a joint account this will cause confusion. Your faced with waiting for the charge to be processed. A average charge of $300 is now on your statement. Your next step with Banking is the Demand to close out the credit/debit accts Now. Once again, the Bank states there is activity and you need to call the phone# and prove this is not your charges, fill out a dispute form Because the Merchant has now submitted a contract that must be paid by the Bank on your behalf. There is No true name, No true address and No phone number on the monthly stmt, Just a reference number. You now wait for the Bank to get this information of where the money is being sent from the Main Bank Division. Please take my advise, If you expect fraud, DEMAND, Do not leave your Bank until the accounts are completely closed, "The small town Bank branches are no longer Banks", You are only a number not a customer. If your Bank refuses to close out your checking/savings on your first attempt CALL the Banking Commission in your State immediately. Do not listen to the advise of the Bank Manager to prove the charges because of a contract submitted. Once the fake contract is excepted by your bank, the Bank will write checks on your behalf in any amount requested by the fake merchant. Within 2 weeks, too much stress, And accusations between my hasband and I, the Bank kindly gave a Mark Paypal $1800. Thanks to the Banking Commission the fraud was stopped, money reimbursed and a fast Bank merger completed. This nightmare has happened to many families in my State of Maryland. We no longer use credit/debit cards at all. The Banking Commission advised us, upon use of the credit/debit card, you just gave your personal information and monies to any employee of a store, gas station, payment by phone and internet. None are safe.

    This is interesting. I just finished a temp job with a company that does exactly what is being said. If a person orders from them and the bill is different from the amount paid up front then refunds are never done. They have 43K in credits sitting in their over 90days column of their accounts receivable aging alone. This business practice bothers me, but I do not know who to report it to.

    rfbaron...I would start with the Better Business Bureau. They may even advise you as to where to take the next step. Possibly IC3 (link is in the article) could help? Or the IRS (you could check their website)? I would also tell the temp agency that sent you there...not sure if your local Sheriff's Dept would be any help, but perhaps the State Police. If they don't want to listen, then you work your way through State Representatives, Congressmen, Senators...but I would be persistant about this, right down everything you remember seeing, hearing, etc. so that you won't forget later. I get so irritated with companies and people that commit fraud...because most of the time they get away with it! Don't let this happen with that company..be vigilant and keep barking to any and every resource until you get one to do something about it! That would be the courageous thing to do...please don't just look away and let them continue doing this...unfortunately, that's what most people would do. Good luck!!

    I was charged $4.95 from a company called smartemarket.com. When I called my credit union, they told me that I should call this company and ask them to return the charge on my credit card. Don't let your financial institution tell you this. I informed my credit union that I never authorized this charge and this was FRAUD. They sent me the papers to sign and issued a new card immediately. Make sure to scrutinize your statement every month. I have the luxury of checking my card statement online at any time and I take advantage of this service!!!

    I found these charges, cancelled my credit card, got a new card and, guess what, the same ole charges followed me to the new card because the credit card said that these charges were some sort of membership. I called the company who charged me and they found me using my new card, said that someone else had taken the membership out and that they would gladly remove the charges since they started. Guess I'll go the fraud route in the future.

    What a conincidence. I just rcieved my credit card statement and there was a charge of $59.95 from some credit card insurance service. I disputed this charge with with credit issuer and they in return issued me a new credit card and referred the matter to the fraud dept. --------------------------------------------------- I am Christina, a beautiful woman from us. i am just at the begining of my career and want to seek a man for support...where should i start?? maybe here.. i also uploaded my hot photos on the famous service http://MeetSTD.com under the name sexychristina4u, maybe you want to check out my photos!

    I went to a Speedway gas station and used my debit card at the pump...that charge appeared and another one for $8 and change...what the heck???

    please be aware of AT&T especially, since they have so many different charges. I called and asked that I get an explanation on all my charges. I keep a track of the charges every month, and will do so till god knows how long.

    As recent as February 4, 2008 I found two fraudulent charges on my bank account at Patelco Credit Union. One from PROPHOTOSLAND for $9.87 with a Tel.609-916-0040 as reference. The other one is from DEN ENTERPRISES for $9.55 with Tel.877-487-4751 as reference. After looking at the Internet and this site I discovered these are fraudulent charges, and as you can see it is widespread.

    I received my credit card statement today,and checked on all my charges for accuracy. Low and behold,a $9.87 transaction from photosland.com was there.I cancelled my card promptly after reading other comments on this web page. Please be aware of your transactions and check your statement throughly each month.

    I also just got a charge from prophotosland.com for 9.87 and I disputed the charge. It showed up on my debit card statement as well.
