In response to eBay's recent announcement that it would no longer allow sellers to leave negative feedback for buyers, the uproar has been deafening. How deafening? So loud that a boycott has been planned, set to begin tomorrow on February 18, 2008 and run for (at least) a week.
Will it stick? As I noted in my original post, eBayers who want to auction things have little alternative to the auction giant unless they want to open their storefronts or sell at fixed-price merchants like Amazon.com.
However, a recent poll of eBay sellers showed that a full 90 percent were unhappy with the policy change (though AuctionBytes notes that no one was really happy with the feedback system before the change, either). Though, as the above story notes, "What I'm hearing from a sellers is not, can we afford to boycott eBay for a week, but rather, can we afford to continue selling on eBay once these changes roll out?"
eBay boycotts are nearly as old as eBay itself, and none of those have been effective at getting the company to change its policies. But things may be different now, as sellers appear to be weighing whether to even bother selling merchandise online at all, turning instead to flea markets and enthusiast fairs instead of wading through what many now see as a bureaucratic and expensive nightmare.
Still, eBay may be taking the threat seriously. To mitigate any ill will, eBay is offering a listing promo until the 20th (per AuctionBytes), and its new discounts for media sellers take effect on that day, too. Will people be drawn to a deal enough to overlook a few policy changes? We shall see.

I used to be a large powerseller on Ebay until I realized the only person making money was Ebay. I would sell thousands of dollars worth of merchandise - and at the end of the month we'd look at the Ebay statement and see the amount of money they were taking from us -- it was rediculous! I still buy on Ebay but will be supporting this Boycott 100%. This corporate greed is terrible!
I was kicked off ebay because of (false) negative feedback from a buyer. I listed a printer that stopped working during bidding process. I added a comment to my ad that said I no longer felt comfortable selling a printer that was not working as described. the winner (?) complained to ebay that I accepted payment and did not send pymt. PAYMENT WAS NEVER MADE. ebay did not investigate, just kicked me off.......
What was eBay thinking? Without being able to post negatives, how will people know if the one they want to buy from has a shady business, or is completely honest? I support the boycott! ☺ You should Too!
I am a high a end buyer and seller on ebay.If you get screwwd by a deadbeat buyer and bring it to ebays attention, they care less.Ebay has your credit card # and sure enough you'll see it on your next statement.I am still charged even though the buyer was a phony and or non payer.Paypal is a scam also. They charge you to hold your money.Come on people wisen up.The rich get richer.Ebay is a fools garage sale, only at least at a garage sale you can visably see, and touch your item. Caviat emptor!
THIS IS HAMBURGER EXCESS ALL AMERICANS ARE EXTREMELLY STUPIDS PERSONS, ONLY IN AMERICA HAPPEN THESE THINGS WHY AMERICAN PEOPLE DOES NOT HAVE BRAIN THEY ARE DONKY, BURROS, HAMBURGER EXCCESS CAUSE A PROBLEM IN THE HEAD, IN THE BRAIN THAT IS WHAY AMERICAN ARE DONKYS..
Sellers and Buyers: Please post info on where to find other ONLINE AUCTIONS. I would LOVE to run away from E-Bay.
The big problem is the feedback- one way or another the fees will work themselves out- but the feedback change will destroy the ability of buyers and seller to trust each other. Ebay does a lusy job of policing the site- buyers and sellers must rely on the community to share info. This ability will be wiped out in one fell swoop with the feedback change. With the changes, bad buyers will be invisible- they will look like the good buyers as the feedback system is worthless if all one can do is leave positive. Feedback is meaningless if it is all the same. Sellers will a be tainted, but to various degrees. Sellers will have no recourse against non paying bidders who leave bad feedback on items they never paid for- just to taint the seller. Human nature shows us that there are folks who will, simply because they CAN, try out giving bad feedback- it may be a pent up anger at Ebay, or another seller- but the opportunity will present its self and there will be those that experiment, and those misdirected bad feedbacks will hurt the whole market place. Ebay won't care, they have much to gain by poorly rated sellers, in that they will give fewer discounts and retain more income. All buyers and sellers will be viewed as crooks and scammers- the feedback will be worthless and eveyone will be suspect. Talk about enhancing the buying experience. Way to go Ebay!
I have been on eBay since 1999 and this is the stupidess mistake they have ever made. There are other sites out there and we need to support them. Do they think "giving " us nickels and dimes up front will offset the DOLLARS they will get in final valve fees!! Boycott the heck out of eBay----I am.
Frankly, I don't think the 20-cent listing fee sale last Weds was an act of good will at all. It was an attempt on the part of eBay to have more 7 & 10-day listings go up that would still be there during the boycott. Which is why I did not use it. As for the feedback change, it is STUPID! I have NEVER left a retaliatory feedback. But I HAVE negged people who never paid. Sure, eBay gives back the FVF fees on NPBs but they do NOT refund the listing fees, nor is there a way to refund my TIME. Rarely does a "Second Chance offer" bidder actually buy. By the time I know the original winner is not paying, other customers are long gone. And now I can 't even give the NPB a neg? An d if we cannot neg them, then the ability to block people with a minus score is nil -- there will never again BE a minus bidder score. I'm boycotting!!!
Hey Workfordummy Why you talk like caveman? Shame no you! Americans donky? Me no like Workfordummy. Although, he talk funny!
Great. But the boycott is planned to only last one week. If it's only going to last that long, ebay can just ride it out and be like "welcome back, Suckers" when they return.
It would be a stupid move for eBay to remove the negative feedback, how would I find out who is rubbish when it comes to dealing with issues, sending the items you have bought, or is just selling stuff in general? I guess if they continue with what they are doing I just won't leave feedback and let them chase me about for my reasons.
Workfordummy is precisely the type of troll who will be bidding up a storm and not paying quite secure in the knowledge that he will not be getting any feedback to alert sellers that he is a problem buyer. eBay will not take meaningful action to enforce buyer ID verification because when a seller files Non Paying Bidder the seller is NOT REFUNDED for the Insertion Fees. This adds up to an enormous amount each year given that eBay admits to 6% NPB. Actual percentage is higher because high volume sellers often do not bother with the process. It costs them more to file than they will be refunded. What WILL happen is that the overall feedback percentages will go down for all sellers, deserving of the negative or not. How will you feel as a buyer when not one seller has a higher than 80% positive feedback ratio? Would you think you had landed in SleazeBay? eBay will look like a manure pit, muck heap, midden, cesspool, take your pick. Our new CEO has thrown the baby out with the bathwater to quote Ina Steiner. How much better to have fixed the problem of retaliatory feedback by preventing the use of automated 'like for like' feedback programs. The majority of the problem goes buh-bye right there. How much better to prevent the leaving of ANY negative feedback until the eBay automated dispute process has been completed by BOTH sides? As a seller I have reached tipping point. When I am paying eBay and Paypal more than 50% of my gross I am no longer viable as a business. The signs were on the wall when stores fees increased in 06 because we were getting added search visibility, which was removed two months later. Stores fees did not (of course) go down again.
i love ebay.. but not having to accept negative comments for those sellers who are fraud are unacceptable and not good business!!thank you for this news and now i will wait for the outcome of the strike and hold on bidding or purchasing anything on ebay..
Foolish Foolish Buyers. Speak only what you know is fact. In many instances, paying quickly is not the only job of a buyer. Communicating a correct address is in there as well as reading an auctions terms correctly. Misreading an auction can lead to frustrations on a buyers part which in turn, when panties are in a bunch, the seller gets an unjust negative when it was plain as day the terms in the auction. In my case as someone who sells custom boutique apparel, giving measurements in a timely manner is also required as is giving correct measurements. A fraction of an inch off can completely change fit. So no, it is not always as simple as paying quickly and the seller being obligated to leave a positive. I am in support of the boycott and have moved all my items elsewhere. I have 100% feedback on eBay but with only just over 100 feedback, one slanderous negative, and I'm done for. It's not right, it's not fair and it WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. I will not hesitate to leave negative comments on a buyers id just with a positive mark. There's always ways around eBay's stupidity.
I have been an ebay seller/buyer since 1999 I rarely give bad feedback to buyers due to the fact you really don't know the circumstances of the buyer. I feel guilty giving neg. feedback to any one. now mail order businesses are a hard business to do. I have bought and sold doing mail order. now in my opinion ebay is just an outlet to advertise your buisiness,as well as doing a mail order business. when people order from spiegal catalogs , avon or other mail order companies there is no way to give pos. or neg. feed back to these companies. Even sears catalogs people bought from,no one ever gave neg. feedback to sears. People still order from them. So whats the big deal sears , spiegal and other mail order companies just sent dunning letters ,.never gave feedback of any kind. So why boycott ebay To me it is a waste of time. ebay is just an outlet to sell your goods, thats all. I reall don't approve of the feedback stuff any way.
My only question is, Where's Pierre? Does he really want those cronies running his baby? Cobb, Meg and Donahue are just not what eBay needs. Ask the sellers, they pay the way!
I bought my daughter a flute on Ebay and promptly contacted the seller to verify address and such and sent the payment out. Over the course of the transaction I emailed the seller 4 times and received no response. So when The flute arrived and was in great shape as advertised. I contacted the seller one more time to let him know it arrived but still no response. It was over a 3 week period these 5 were sent to him. So I left neutral feedback stating that Item was great but communication was lacking. The seller then left negative feedback stating that he demanded positive feedback. Since then I refuse to buy anything on Ebay.
After reading the posts on this and other sites My personal opinion is expressed in nearly every post.I am a volume powerseller on ebay for 8 years and weathered some dramatic changes and fee increase's both on the front and back end over the years but this is astounding! The recent announcements where gut wrenching for me as I could not imagine ebay execs being so blind to the long term and short term impact these obvious unwelcome changes would inititate.Incredible! What are they thinking? The announcements where an insulting and a slap in the face. I am participating in the boycott and have not listed or allowed a single item to be listed today for the first time in nearly 8 years. Ebay will back off on the the feedback changes or I will close my e-bay store's within a week as we transition our stock to amazon.com,ebid and two other privatly owned sites. The Feedback situation is unacceptable and I will NOT conduct my buisness under this type of system. Even if ebay backs off on the feedback changes they have lost a loyal and dedicated seller permanently as I seek out other options.I am not in buisness to loose money or have my reputaion ruined. The damage is done,I don't trust the ebay leadership any longer and forsee the fall of this once mamouth site to the margin's of the trade. Good bye E-bay!

i think a boycott is a great isea count me in other wise the buyer doesnt have a voice or able to warn others of bad practises or bad seller. as it is now ebay is raping so much money from sellers for fees just to post an item added to that that most of the sellers now are corporate not your average everyday person. and most are from china. being able to post a bad sellers business practice or just plain rippoffs is a good thing and should not be banned for the safety of the buying public all this will do is unleash more and more rippoffs . i have a pending complaint with a seler now who took my money and never sent me the product i paid for. and you had better beiliev i have posted a negative comment to warn others of his practice
