How to Buy a Laptop: Holiday 2006 Edition

I offered buying advice for desktop PCs for the 2006 holiday season a few weeks ago. At popular request, I'm turning my attention to laptops. Here's what to consider if you're making a notebook purchase in the new year.

  • CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo is just now arriving on laptops, and it's the CPU of choice no matter what type of user you are. However there are some great deals to be had on Core Duo machines, most of which were released only a few months ago. Most users will find the original Core Duo plenty fast.
  • Memory - As with desktops, get all you can afford. 1GB minimum, especially for Vista.
  • Operating System - Same deal as with desktops. If you're planning to go with Vista, wait until 2007 to buy a notebook. Driver issues are far more complex with portables than with desktops, and you don't want to be stuck trying to upgrade only weeks after you bought the machine. See my comments in the desktop shopping story for more detail.
  • Hard Drive - 160GB is tops for notebooks right now, but about 80GB is more common and less expensive. That should be plenty for most users for the foreseeable future. If you're a digital movie collector, go with the big one.
  • Optical Drive - A few systems are now including HD-DVD drives instead of standard DVD, however I've found all HD-DVD laptop drives slow and very buggy. I'd stick with a DVD-RW drive now, dual layer of course.
  • Graphics Card - This varies widely, as manufacturers are still putting year-old graphics cards in laptops in many cases. High end cards like the Nvidia Geforce 7800/7900 series are pricey, but they're absolutely required if you want to have any hope of playing the latest games on your laptop. Remember that graphics cards are generally not upgradeable, so it's important to get the best you can afford right when you make the purchase.
  • Screen - A critical decision. Widescreen displays comprise virtually the entire market now, so don't expect to find many 4:3 aspect ratio machines for sale. The big question here is whether you want a 17-inch monster display, a standard 15.4-inch display, or something smaller. The weight of the machine will vary accordingly: Expect to carry 8 pounds and up for a 17-inch system, 6 to 7 pounds with a 15.4-inch machine, and as little as 3 pounds with an ultralight. Laptops aren't going to get much lighter in 2007, so don't hold out for anything that'll be easier to pick up.

Again, I haven't really touched on the issue of going with Mac vs. PC, but if the MacOS is attractive to you, the new MacBook Pros are outstanding (if pricey). Yes, they can also run Windows, but they have a fatal flaw: The single mouse button means you'll have to use an external mouse if you want to get anything done with the machine in Windows. (Again, for the various Mac comments below: This is an issue for those running Windows!)  Plan accordingly.

As always, feel free to send me specs or a link to the laptop you're considering via email and I'll weigh in with an opinion. Happy shopping!

I will be purchasing a laptop this week, and the information was extremely helpful. I decided to go with a Dell 1705.

I have a 3 pound Dell. It is really a Samsung computer but Dell puts their name on it. I love it. Heavy laptops suck. I used to have one and the big screen was not worth the extra weight (in my opinion).

CHYONE74: I used to think macs were nice till they put them in the high schools. They only have half the functions and are MUCH harder to work on or fix. Frankly, I think you'd be safer with a PC despite what the commercials say. LeAndra Schmidt Computer Tech

Look, let me put it in english for those who are looking to buy a lap top. If you are in the market don't worry about what brand to buy. They are all the same. Just buy a new laptop and take good care and be sure it has a warranty. If your lucky you wont have to use the warranty in the first 6 months of use. Battery Tip: If you are using the lap top while it is plugged in, at first charge the battery then take it out. Only let the battery sit in the laptop when it is NOT plugged in. Just a tip if you want the battery to last.

CTRL/click on a Mac = Right-click on a PC. You don't need an extra mouse!

This article was completely useless. Does this guy work for Intel? Because I didn't hear any mention at all of the AMD options, which many experts prefer these days. And hard drive: "160 GB is tops for now." That is just untrue. I saw a laptop with a 250 GB hard drive at Best Buy just the other day, and I was just browsing. Not doing research for a supposedly professional article. That was as far as a read. If I know more as a casual consumer than this clown does, why does he even bother phoning this stuff in?

Who I really feel sorry for are the people who come here for help and 1/2 of the "comments" are "Mac v. Windows" geeks. For all of you who are looking to buy a Notebook computer (laptop went the way of horse and buggy..lol) a few salient points: *if it's only going to be in your dorm or office don't worry about size.. then the bigger the better *If this is your first computer dont worry about 150 gig V. 250 Gig. it doesn't matter. *Mac v. PC. most all of the files are interchangeable. but for a Mac to run windows you have to buy a Vista (or Windows) OS seperatley.. so your talking Min $250 extra if you buy a Macbook Some points to Check: * make sure it has a wi-fi card (Especially for your scholls and dorms since "hard-wired" networks are going away. * Need a card reader? (for reading memory cards form your camera or phone or even your MP3 player) *Support, Suport and support...Sony and Apple only give you a 90 day warranty..THIS IS A BIG POINT * Dont' be afraid to ask for a deal.. meaning go in the store,,be it a best buy and ask them for a a better price.. The worst they can say is no. Any questions E-mail me

Great advice but what company is better than another when it comes to buying a laptop?

I recently switched from a PC to a Mac and I love it!! I do not run windows on my machine but that does not matter because given one afternoon and you two can be an expert in MacOS. As for the mouss, I have both an external mouse and the touch pad mouse and I really don't have a preference for either. Needless to say, the Mac is worth it, at least in my opinion.

About the one button for clicking on Mac notebooks, you actually can use a right click function. All you would need to do is put two fingers on the touch pad and click the button or hold the control button and click the button. Make sure you know the Mac before you try to bash it.

Hi, I was reading your article re buying laptops. What do you think of Dell given your suggestions re features? Or this one, called Acer? I don't think I will need anything sophisticated; something simple: wireless, Windows, plays music/CD. Hope you can help.
