Six Ways Cell Phones Can Hurt Your Business

If you haven't been in a business setting where one of these things has happened, then you're probably still in college.

The Cell Freak's six rules for making sure cell phones don't ruin your business (by way of Steve Marr's book Business Proverbs) are essential reading.

Here are a few of my experiences with a few of the rules on this list.

  • Controlling when you receive calls - This is actually the core of a few of Marr's major points. And it all comes down to common sense. If you're in a business meeting, face to face with a human who bothered to drive all the way to your office, don't answer the phone. The call can be returned. The face time cannot be replaced. I don't know how many meetings I've had that were interrupted by a cell phone conversation, but I do know that every time it affected my opinion of the person I was meeting with and/or the product he was presenting.
  • "Unlimited minutes" doesn't mean you should talk forever - The last thing I do when I'm on the phone is want to chit-chat with you just because you have extra time on your plan this month. We both have work to do, right?
  • Driving and dialing = disaster - This is more of an safety issue than a business one, but unless you're hopelessly lost, you should focus on the driving and leave the calling to those at the office. I should add that I don't even like it when passengers use their phones and I'm trying to drive: In another life I had to occasionally go to meetings with my boss, by car. Rather than talk to me about our game plan when we got there, he'd make social calls on his cell phone the whole time. Annoying.
  • Keep it private - If you have to take the call (and I recognize there are always exceptions to the above rules), step outside. Especially if we're in the car, on the freeway.

I have a question concerning cell phones. I don't if I will do a good job at describing what I want to do but here goes. I live in Central Alabama evrytime I travel South my phone does not work. I have complained to Verizon about this problem for about a year and a half. I am looking for a way to totally wipe out evrything to the point of it not working but don't want to show any physical damage. Is there anyway I can do this? Any help or suggestions would most appreciated.

I personally hate it when I am at a store or business or a business meeting and the person I'm with prefers to take a call rather than serve the person already in front of him! Cellphones are destroying all social skills.

Remember the day when people around you on the subway, the movie theater, the elevator, the campus, the bar, the check-out line, the bank and the toilet next to you didnt talk your ear off with meaningless cellphone chit-chat?? Those were the days...

I own my own web design business and I constantly am working with clients that would rather take a phone call then to continue the meeting that I have with them and it is SO ANNOYING. I end up spending 1 hour with them (which consultation is free) just to present 10 minutes of material. It is wasting my time and my companies time. I personally dont have a cell phone by choice so I dont feel I have to do that to others, a message on my home or work phone will do fine and I will get back to you when I have time.

I hate cell phones so much I threw mine away, took an early cancellation charge and quit them altogether. I really, really have to bite my tongue at times when I'm talking with someone, their phone rings and they just HAVE TO ANSWER IT!!! My time's valuable too.
