Angry eBayers, peeved that the option to ding bad purchasers with negative feedback have been stripped from them (among other gripes), launched a boycott on February 18th in an attempt to get eBay's attention and get the policy reversed. To everyone's surprise, that boycott looks like it might be having some effect.
According to medved.net, which keeps a running tally of the number of auctions running at any given time on the site, total listings have plummeted from 14.5 million on Monday to about 12.7 million (see chart above) as of the time of this posting. (eBay doesn't offer this information publicly.) That's significant (representing a 14 percent drop), especially since typical eBay listings begin to ramp up on Wednesdays and on toward the weekend instead of heading south.
That said, auction listings are subject to myriad vagaries: There's just no telling what might be affecting listings on a day to day basis, but such a steep drop like this doesn't happen often. Total listings, however, are still well up over the year's January 4 low of 11 million, which is historically the lowest things get until May arrives, bringing with it summer auction doldrums as sellers head out on vacation. It will likely take a sustained drop in sales for eBay to take notice of the boycott and concede a policy change. For its part, eBay has said the boycott "hasn't had an impact" and that it was "too early to speculate" on whether the boycott would have any long-term effect.
Meanwhile, angry eBayers are stepping up the action. Many are calling for a second week of boycotts, starting February 25. Their goal: Get total listings to bottom out below 10 million. We shall see.

What ebay is doing to us is a CRIME!! We all need to take action -- not just boycott/strike for a week or two -- we need to make ebay accountable for their actions. They are purposely pushing US out and stealing OUR customers. They are holding OUR money and keeping the interest for THEMSELVES. Start filing complaints with the FTC -- it can be done online in just a few minutes -- We need to flood them with complaints -- Be smart, everyone -- we need to fight a good fight!
I dont do much on Ebay anyway, I started on Ebay in 98, when it was awesome. Now its all a bunch of scammers, dealers selling junk or selling at higher prices than in retail stores. Boycott them completely!!! They make so much money they forgot how they got there....
I left eBay for good as a seller with the SYI change debacle that started during the summer of 2006. The fees went up, the time to submit auctions quadrupled because of so many flaws in the listing software, and my sell-through rates went from no less than 65-80% to 33%. The last three items I bought on eBay were from scam artists, two of whom had repackaged used items as new, and a PS who sent merchandise that was not even close to what was pictured. Went through 3 items not as described filings and fights via PayPal. I am forever through with eBay and PayPal and hope they collapse. They deserve it. What a down down down company they have turned into.
I'm in on the boycott! I have taken to craigslist to sell my items recently. It may be true I don't get top dollar as I would on ebay, but I do not have to ship, pay all the fees incurred with ebay and paypal, and run the risk of a chargeback or dispute. Ebay/PayPal... Change the policy before you go down in history just like all the other auction sites including the online payment company Bidpay! Keep up the good work trusted powersellers! lets keep this going until they are forced to change their policy!!!
ebay deserves it. so does paypal... we should boycott paypal as well. their policy never promised decent security. I am tired of losing money and getting screwed by this manipulative and money hungry company.
now if folks like osnat(os-box) will support the boycott... then THAT would make an impact!
I have been a seller since '99, full time since '01. Some of the changes over the years have been good, some horrific. I have taken part in the boycott, even though I really need to be selling right now. I would like to feel more positive about the boycott having any effect on Feebay' policy changes. I would even continue the boycott for another week if I believed it would help. Overall, the most recent changes make me feel violated. I am no longer making enough money after all the fees, including paypal-yet another USPS rate hike looming, add to that, the feedback changes, fee structure, etc. I cannot justify the many long hours put in, am checking out new venues. I can no longer feel anything but prostituted as a seller on ebay. And the pimp is getting meaner and meaner....
Looks like no lingering long-term effects beyond day 1...
IF EVERYONE WILL CONTINUE TO BOYCOTT AGAINST EBAY, I don't see them being in business for much longer! Remember, they were built upon the powers of all of us, so all of us do also have the same power to take those greedy ----- s down! Meg is smart to run away with the millions she's made coz she knows what's upcoming.....
Want to hit them where it hurts??? Starting now.... EVERY time you do a search & see a PAID ad either at the top of list OR down the right side (google paid ads) that says ebay.com (not individual stores)... click on it. Pass this on to everyone you know. make them use those fees they charge us instead of raising the CEO's paycheck!
Now it is the time to move to alternative eBay sites. With the growing dissatisfaction with eBay, some websites will emerge to become the new de facto person to person trading platform. You're right post #45! Buyers should boycott Ebay also! The sellers you are talking about aren't the same folks that are boycotting. They are still selling and could care less about rights of the seller. You know why? Because the unscrupulous seller doesn't abide by the rules anyway! Why should they care about feedback changes or fee increases for that matter? You are right! There are some pretty awful sellers on Ebay, but you'll agree there are some buyers who are just as bad. Possibly the same people! Honest buyers looking for a good deal should not continue to buy on Ebay. Although there are some good sellers who must continue to sell during the boycott due to financial concerns, most are your scammers who wouldn't think twice about sending you nothing in return for your money. Not just that, in the near future sellers are going to have to raise their prices to make up for the increase in fees and where are the good deals going to be then??? Jump on Google and type in Ebay boycott in the search box to get all the info you need to understand this is both for sellers and buyers too. Then if you would, please type in "online auction" or any other combination of words to get a long list of other sites where the decent Ebay sellers are going! I've yet to see anyone on the seller discussion thread who has less than a 98 percent positive feedback rating and these are the ones who are voicing their concerns and leaving for greener pastures. With all the crap they've been dishing out lately you'd think Ebay's grass would be the greenest?! We may be small by ourselves, but our numbers are increasing daily. Look for us anywhere but on Feebay because we are soooooooo outta there!!!
