Angry eBayers, peeved that the option to ding bad purchasers with negative feedback have been stripped from them (among other gripes), launched a boycott on February 18th in an attempt to get eBay's attention and get the policy reversed. To everyone's surprise, that boycott looks like it might be having some effect.
According to medved.net, which keeps a running tally of the number of auctions running at any given time on the site, total listings have plummeted from 14.5 million on Monday to about 12.7 million (see chart above) as of the time of this posting. (eBay doesn't offer this information publicly.) That's significant (representing a 14 percent drop), especially since typical eBay listings begin to ramp up on Wednesdays and on toward the weekend instead of heading south.
That said, auction listings are subject to myriad vagaries: There's just no telling what might be affecting listings on a day to day basis, but such a steep drop like this doesn't happen often. Total listings, however, are still well up over the year's January 4 low of 11 million, which is historically the lowest things get until May arrives, bringing with it summer auction doldrums as sellers head out on vacation. It will likely take a sustained drop in sales for eBay to take notice of the boycott and concede a policy change. For its part, eBay has said the boycott "hasn't had an impact" and that it was "too early to speculate" on whether the boycott would have any long-term effect.
Meanwhile, angry eBayers are stepping up the action. Many are calling for a second week of boycotts, starting February 25. Their goal: Get total listings to bottom out below 10 million. We shall see.

Sorry about the multiple posts, I hit post just once and look what happened.
eledgreg1 is exactly right. this is typical for an end of an ebay promotion
elecgreg1 is absolutely correct. Before the .20 cent listing day (last mon and tues) the auction counts were only 12.2 million. After the listing sale they skyrocketed up to over 17 million. Most of the sales all ended today and the listings have come down to 12.7 million. Still higher than before the sale. I am hoping tomorrow there is a steep drop below 12 million. That will show there is some effect from the boycott as I really hope the boycott works but so far I don't see alot of action. The boycotters should NOT have listed on the .20 cent day. Others (boycotters) listed things for sale BEFORE the boycott and to go off AFTER the boycott so that hurts the listing counts also for those hoping to see them go down.
they are still falling dramatically sorry but if they drop to 11 million or below ebay will be in dire straits as they will know the boycott is having a effect as for me i have left ebay they will not get 1 penny from me ever again mr doh no hoe just don`t know how much this as gotten to many sellers maybe he should listen to the people who pay his massive sallary dave now a full time ebid.net member and much happier
the boycott is having a effect the listings are dropping like a lead balloon the shares are dropping mr doh no hoe should take note all other auction sites are heading upwards with listings and members mr doh no hoe just doh no hoe to run a business unlike the many power sellers who are leaving in thousands because they know the end is coming the stats are there for all to see and if these drop to 10.5 million or below then ebay will be in trouble join new sites stand up against these corporations they just want your money for doing nothing dave ebid.net member and proud to list there
I think ebay will fix the listing counts & include many country's & use other tactics ( They will do there up most to ensure the figure remains above 10 million ) In order to steady the share price & undermine the boycott
The decrease in auction listings appear to be the normal correction following the listing sale from the previous week. Either way, bidding is higher than usual because buyer confidence is up and that is what ebay intended. Would I like to see my seller fees go down? Yep, I'd love a free ride. Do I think the feedback changes are unfair? It doesn't matter what I think because even though I am ebays' customer, it's MY customer that keeps me aflaot so my opinion doesn't matter.
As an ebay buyer and seller I can honestly say that this company (and Paypal alike) have gone from being auction buyers' friends to being vultures circling over our heads just waiting to pick at what's left when they are done with us. Consumer confidence?? Who have you been talking to? I've been on ebay since 2001 and it's done nothing but gone downhill in customer service and sales. This boycott is a long time in coming and is actually a hidden blessing to many sellers and buyers. Tell me this - who has the right to expect payment for the work they do? Everyone who works, right? Not with Paypal! No, they have taken it upon themselves, since they are not government regulated financial institutions, to hold our payments for 21 days! This includes the money we need to ship the items to our buyers. So, if I show up on payday at your place of employment, you will be willing to hand me your paycheck and give it back (if I feel like it) to you in 3 weeks. And no, you can't have gas money to go home, as Paypal says, it will have to come from another funding source. Sorry. If you saw a guy standing on the corner holding a sign that said "I'm a thief and will steal from you and your family", would you sell him something? If so, you belong on Ebay! The new feedback system takes away all of those guys' signs so we don't know if we are selling to a thief or a decent buyer. Buyers will still know who is an honest seller though, and it's their job to read the feedback and be sure they are not dealing with a thief for a seller. I know this goes both ways and have been ripped off as a seller and also as a buyer. The fee increase is expected and the way they tried to sell it to us is quite comical. Hmmm...let's save them a nickel on listing fees and raise their final fee by about 66%? Sounds good to the big guys obviously. So, I am one of tens of thousands of Ebay sellers and buyers who is finished with Ebay and their little pal Paypal too. Not just for the boycott period, but for the duration of my working/selling/buying lifetime. My Ebay ID is wildwoods714 and I endorse this "Boycott Ebay and Paypal" message. Thank you.
I am sick and tired of corporate Greed Feebay is no longer any better than gas companies! Raising the cost with a controversaly low economy!! That's just wrong when is the sun going to shine??? Clayton @ clay's collection or cmccune04
wildwoods says it all! i was just on the ebay site and they are pulling my posts because of suggestions of checking out other auction sites... BOYCOTT PAYPAL TOO, NOT JUST EBAY! PAYPAL IS EBAY, THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY TWICE AND PAYPAL TAKES MORE! GOOGLE "AUCTION SITES" AND CHECK THEM OUT! I never even heard of half of them because I have been selling on ebay since 1998 ! iOffer.com looks interesting, no listing fees, no final value fees if you do not sell! there are alternatives if eBay does not listen! i support the boycott not only this week, but every day until they stop this new nonsense!!!!!!!!
We are longtime buyers and sellers on eBay. We have great feedback and high DSR's. eBay's changes, in addition to increasing our fees, will allow buyers to lower our FB and DSR's, simply because they can with no recourse from any seller. It's time to move on. We have joined the exodus, along with many others, to new and brighter venues. All eBayers need to check out the vast list of other sites. Fees are much cheaper elsewhere...and these other sites actually WANT us, unlike eBay. 'Bye, eBay...you had a great run. Last one out, turn off the lights.
I think Ebay had start noticing the very people that keep it alive are sick and tired of being abused by this coporate giant, Alot of us are listing our items and joining other communties that are cropping up due to disatisfaction in the way Ebay treats them. As soon as another competitive market takes off, Ebay will find its sales tremendously down and nolonger needed just watch.
John Donahoe's vision for Ebay is to be another Amazon. He is deliberately making it impossible for the small sellers of unique vintage, antique, collectible, hand-crafted and second hand items to make a profit on Ebay. I for one am happy to take my business to onlineauctions.com instead. For less money I am getting a fair marketplace and better customer service. I will have to do some extra marketing to get buyers to the site as many do not know about them. That's okay, a little hard work never hurt anyone! When buyers see reasonable prices, reasonable shipping fees, and many of their favorite former Ebay sellers, they will be happy to buy. I think there is a lot more going on behind the scenes that a lot of people realize and I hope we can get some regulatory agencies to investigate.
Ebay sellers are tired of working only for Ebay to make a profit and for their hard work to bring home nothing... The stock will continue to deflate in price and Sellers will continue to leave... At this point I don't see that even saying, "we made a mistake" would help... When you call a hard working class of people, "a bunch of noise", and then remind them that you aren't listening to that "noise", then I'd say that you need to be humbled... This boycott will do that if not totally collapse the company and expose them for what they are... BOYCOTT EBAY FOREVER!!
I LOVE THIS MOMCAT! MAY I USE IT ON OTHER SITES? 'Bye, eBay...you had a great run. Last one out, turn off the lights.
I'd like to know if completed auctions have actually "sold" during the strike period. Does anyone have this information.

Ebay has done more than just screw up the feedback rating. They continue to screw sellers by raising final value fees, not refunding reserve fees, allowing bidders to freely phish reserve prices (then retract bids), not allowing ANY recouse for a bad buyer, and providing ZERO seller protection through paypal. Ebay is so focused on buyers that they left behind the people THAT PAY THE EBAY FEES- the sellers! Anyone ever try to contact ebay? IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!. They have a screwed up help system that dumps you back and forth through different pages. Good luck trying to send an email or call with a problem. Ebay headquarters must be the only place in the modern world without a single phone. Where is google when you need them? They would be about the only one to give epay a run for their money.

Now, hold on there eledgreg1. I have been tracking these stats since Feb 14th. And as of the evening of Feb 20th, ebay has lost over 20% of it's auctions. These are recorded by medved.com who is the go to place for accurate ebay stats. 15,900,000 - Feb 14th the auction count 12,700,000 - Feb 20th the auction count as of 10:00pm CST Ebay listings are down by 3,200,000 auctions or 20.13% Now over 2 million auctions down. Sell through stats in the last 3 days dropped from 54% to 47% so I believe that's a drop of 12.96% There is no indication that the numbers will rise, there is every indication that they will continue to tank over the next few days. It's good to know the facts before making assumptions about the boycott impact.
