Three people have written to me in the last 10 days asking about Intel Core Duo CPUs vs. Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs. I figured it was time to tackle the topic on the blog.
Intel's really to blame here for a horrific naming convention. Any half-conscious marketing executive would commit suicide before putting both a numeral 2 and the word "duo" in the name of a product, particularly when there's also a product with "solo" in the name. But let's put that aside and look at the specs of each.
Core Duo is Intel's first dual-core CPU. It's a whole new architecture for Microsoft, using two cores on a single die, which, put simply, gives you two chips in one package. Running at lower speeds than the old Pentium line, the Core Duo conserves substantial power vs. ratcheting up clock speed while offering what was, at the time, record-breaking performance.
Now there's Core 2 Duo. In many ways Core 2 is the same as Core: The chips are built using the same production process and fit in the same sockets as Core Duo chips. Putting aside Core 2 Extreme (a fancy version of the Core 2 Duo), you won't see many spec changes: Both chips have the same frontside bus speed of 667MHz, but Core 2 Duo is now available at somewhat faster clock speeds (as I write this, 2.67GHz chips are available). The frontside bus communicates between the CPU and RAM (and other components), and it's a notorious performance bottleneck for computers. The Core 2 also has the same L2 cache that the Core has. However, there are architecture changes to the silicon that give the Core 2 more sophisticated processing abilities. Both chips exist in desktop and laptop versions.
Why does all of this matter? Performance, pure and simple. In my tests, Core 2 Duo computers outperform Core Duo computers on tasks across the board, from rendering graphics and video to spell-checking documents. The speed improvement varies widely, but on average it's about 30 percent. That's significant in an industry that thrives on tiny, incremental improvement. Better yet, there's not an appreciable difference in battery life on notebooks, as power consumption for both chips (at the same clock speed) is about the same.
Now let's consider pricing. Initially, Core 2 chips were more expensive than Core, but that has changed, as Core is practically gone from the desktop market now. Surprisingly, you can now get a 2.13GHz Core 2 CPU for less than the price of a 1.66GHz Core CPU.
Still, expect to see some systems still on the market that use the Core CPU, especially in laptops. Performance is still very good with Core, so don't feel like you're getting second-class goods if you buy a Core Duo notebook, but remember you are buying a chip that Intel is no longer actively selling, and prices for Core 2 systems aren't really any different than they were for Cores. If it was my money, I'd hold out for a Core 2 system unless you got a great deal on a Core... which will be all but vanished from the market in a matter of months.

What about Centrino Duo? My VAIO has a sticker that says Intel Centrino DUO. What does that mean? God I hate Intel. always with those shady useless marketing strategies. GO AMD.

Hello everybody... I am wondering if u can help me. I am limiteted with money, so I have to choose between HP notebook that has Intel Core Duo 1.46GhZ and Fujitsu Siemens that has Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 GhZ. I was thinking - it is better to buy better and more secure HP, but Fujitsu has Core 2 Duo... What do u think??? Thanxx
Hello, I have a Dell Vostro 1500 w/2.00Ghz @ 800Mhz (T7250)Core 2 Duo, 2G memory, 200GB hd @ 7200rpm for under 900.00. I love it. It is so fast. The same laptop in a Dell Inspirion was about 13-1400. I'm glad I got the core 2. I did alot of research prior to buying. I don't use this but the T7250 also has virtualization capability.
dear crhis, i would like to take your opinion regarding laptops, its the first time im buying a lptop however i do use it for extreme graphics and gaming other then recording programs and home studio programs which recommend alot of ram, i got two offers which one would u choose if u were in my place, i got the hp compaq 6615 which has a 1.83 core 2 duo, 1 gig ram 160 gig hdd, and intel shared graphics up to 256(though id like an nvidia not shared graphics) anyway and on the other hand a sony vaio core duo 1.6 i guess if im not mistakin, everything is almost the same except for the hdd, sony comes with 100gigs intead of 160 and the cpu compaq is core 2 duo 1.83 and the sony is 1.6 core duo, plz provide me some help, mentioning that the difference between the 2 is that the sony is cheaper by only 100$, sony is 999 while the compaq is 1099.
RE: riadabj Centrino is the mobile platform. For a laptop to be labeled centrino it has to have intel approved CPU, chipset and wireless card.
You guys are all... I don't know. Simply put, Core Duo is a dual core previous generation to the Core 2 Duo (also dual core). The next step up is Core 2 Quad, which is two dual core dies together, but still on one socket. Core 2 Extreme is a higher clock-speed and FSB speed version of the Core 2 Quad.
Except in the case of the X6800, which is the only dual-core Core 2 Extreme processor and is a super-beefy version of a Core 2 Duo.

I Think Dual Core,Core 2 Duo ,Core 2 Quad What is the difference ,Power and Speed and rates??
So, which is more recommended for us,is it core or core 2. which is for lifetime use.
Core Duo = two processors on the same chip two-core; 'Core 2' Duo = in 'Core 2' each of the cores represents a 64-bit processor (the registers are 64-bit ones), as opposed to Core Duo, which has two 32-bit processors.

why is yahoo carrying 3 year old review on core duo vs core 2 duo? the capabilities, platform and comparisons might have been updated many times. the info provided here may be true, but in the tech world it is nice to update data lest the research is not seen as irrelevantly old. jay.krishnanb@yahoo.com

So what is ur final answer - should someone save money on core duo or put moere money on core2duo? if core duo is getting out dated now, then core 2 too will be in a years time! you can never keep up with the latest tech without (needlessly) wasting a lot of money. Having used many laptops and processors I feel that one should upgrade only after technology jumps 2 or 3 steps. If you have a Centrino that works fine, got wireless, does all basic stuff, has more than 40 gb hard disk, KEEP IT. upgrade to quad speed or core2 they become quite cheap. The upgrade from centrino to core duo or from core duo to core 2 duo is usually useless.

I'm shocked that one of the Core 2's main advantages has not even been touched upon in this article by anyone. Isn't it that the Core 2 is a 64-bit capable series, unlike the 32-bit-only Core series? The allowance of 64-bit software, which is what future versions of Windows may only be released in, to process gives the Core 2 a highly extended lifespan over the Core line of processors. Additionally, with 64-bit capable processors, the 32-bit limitation of 4Gb memory is blown away when the processor runs with 64-bit software.
