Shocker! Microsoft cuts Vista pricing

Cnet's Ina Fried calls the move possibly unprecedented, and I have to agree: I can't ever recall a time when Microsoft has cut the price of a current operating system. I can't recall Microsoft cutting the price of any current product at all, for that matter.

But here we are: If you buy an upgrade version of Vista at retail, you're in for a discount.

Two versions are seeing price corrections, and only in the U.S.: Vista Ultimate, upgrade version, falls from $299 to $219. Vista Home Premium, upgrade version, goes from $159 to $129. All other Vista editions remain priced the same.

Microsoft rationalizes the move by saying that it was shocked to see how, in pricing tests, the increased sales volume "more than made up for" the amount of lost revenue and concedes that it probably set initial prices too high. (Still, why not cut the non-upgrade pricing, too, Microsoft?)

Critics are curious as to why Microsoft didn't cut the price that computer vendors pay for the OS to be preinstalled on new machines, but it's clearly a case of the good old Microsoft monopoly at work. OEM manufacturers have little choice but to install Microsoft's latest OS on their machines, and they're largely beholden to the price that Microsoft sets.

Still, it's nice to see some weakness in the armor of Microsoft's hubris as well as a non-verbal acknowledgement that Vista is not selling as well as Microsoft would like everyone to believe. So, how long before people who paid full price for the upgrade start clamoring for a refund? (Ha!)

When will the average consumer learn that you don't mess with brand new Microsoft OS's? Seriously, have they EVER shipped a complete, fully functional OS from the start? I'm in IT and we won't 'upgrade' until the XP support runs out. Maybe by 2010 or 2015 Vista will be somewhat decent.

vista - I owned Vista for 2 weeks. The Bad: 1) Doesn't support your old software very well 2) Incompatable with Visual Basic 6, Auotcad 2000, Adobe Illustrator 10, Adobe Photoshop elements. 3) My computer locked up at least 3 times a day. In short, this was the most awful operating system that I have come in contact with. The Good: Nothing. I don't understand how Microsoft can put out such a lousy product & expect anyone to buy it. I replaced Vista with XP Pro. I was able to install all my software in 6 hrs. My computer has not locked up once. If Microsoft thinks they can force us to use Vista, they are nuts. I'd switch to another system like linux or I'd buy Apple before this happens.

Vista is garbage! It is not compatible with most older software and perephrials. Bought a new laptop with vista and a free printer Would not recognise the printer. Would not run pccillin[trend micro]

What is so bad about Vista? I know it has some hardware and software compatibility issues, but other than that, what's wrong with it? Vista may need a computer with the extra horsepower, but its worth it. I find that Vista is a lot faster than XP and a lot more secure. When XP first came out, every one wanted to switch back to 98. Give it time and the hardware and software compatibility issues will be resolved.

Great scrape together to get vista home upgrade and it sat on shelf because of lack of updates. Finally install it and now they want to sell it cheaper with no path for the people who paid full price. Nothing personal just microsoft business again at work

This is a "forced market correction". Almost every version of Windows that comes out is more clunky & more expensive than its predecessor. I tested a banrd now $2200 laptop in Best Buy with Vista. I was not impressed. Sure it had some new graphics but it was taking 4-6 seconds to load "solitare". I mean come on how data-intensive is a basic dos game! With clunky performance like that & sky-high prices no one WANTS this new software other than a teenage kid! Maybee with it being cheaper & computer processors with multipule cores & lots of free ram this WILL start selling. Oh wait, the economys BAD & getting worse! Either way its loose-loose on this one for MS. Better luck next time Bill!
