Shocker! Microsoft cuts Vista pricing

Cnet's Ina Fried calls the move possibly unprecedented, and I have to agree: I can't ever recall a time when Microsoft has cut the price of a current operating system. I can't recall Microsoft cutting the price of any current product at all, for that matter.

But here we are: If you buy an upgrade version of Vista at retail, you're in for a discount.

Two versions are seeing price corrections, and only in the U.S.: Vista Ultimate, upgrade version, falls from $299 to $219. Vista Home Premium, upgrade version, goes from $159 to $129. All other Vista editions remain priced the same.

Microsoft rationalizes the move by saying that it was shocked to see how, in pricing tests, the increased sales volume "more than made up for" the amount of lost revenue and concedes that it probably set initial prices too high. (Still, why not cut the non-upgrade pricing, too, Microsoft?)

Critics are curious as to why Microsoft didn't cut the price that computer vendors pay for the OS to be preinstalled on new machines, but it's clearly a case of the good old Microsoft monopoly at work. OEM manufacturers have little choice but to install Microsoft's latest OS on their machines, and they're largely beholden to the price that Microsoft sets.

Still, it's nice to see some weakness in the armor of Microsoft's hubris as well as a non-verbal acknowledgement that Vista is not selling as well as Microsoft would like everyone to believe. So, how long before people who paid full price for the upgrade start clamoring for a refund? (Ha!)

I don't know, it would've been preferable for me if they were stand-alone versions. Upgrades are nice but I'd prefer a stand-alone when I regularly reformat my hard drive. No matter as I have an OEM copy.

People who say window vista is too slow are too cheap to upgrade, I have window vista and it run find I like it better than window xp.

You don't need to do a full install XP to use the upgrade version. We insert an XP disk for it to read when called for and put the Vista DVD in and it goes on back to doing it's Vista install. The price still isn't cut for us OEM's but they are reminding us frequently that you can now buy Vista Business and downgrade to XP Pro. Now that's a a real "smoking gun" to me Chris.

Vista is the sole reason that I am typing this on a white Macbook right now. I bought a PC w/ Vista Ultimate and after the BSODs started whenever the machine tried to sleep, I had it and returned it for a refund. Vista is the Titanic of the Microsoft product line...it's sinking...fast.

I'm a teacher and we installed Vista Business at my K-6 school. Wish we'd never done it. The decision makers were trying to give the impression that we were "cutting edge." Yeah, and Windows ME was "cutting edge" once, too. Anyway, bought new computers, spent more money for extra RAM & horsepower compared to running XP Pro, had to buy a couple new peripherals, drivers were a mess, some existing education-specific programs simply weren't compatible with Vista as previously thought. Overall, the cost of upgrading was WAY more than expected due to unexpected incompatibilities. If it weren't for the gradebook program and some education-specific programs that require Windows or Mac, I'd have shifted us over to Ubuntu Linux and spent our meager funds on something else.

Honestly, if Microsoft were paying people to switch from XP to Vista I wouldn't take it. Microsoft is, and always will be a second rate junk software company. Most of the average users don't have much choice but to use it, when it's installed on a new machine. Unless Microsoft is turned inside out, and totally revamped it can't help but fail sooner rather than later.

They need to cut the price and why not try throwing in fax capabilities in the Home Premium version. Regular people send faxes too. -Tripple life-digitized.com

it's not selling well because it is crap, plain and simple. aren't upgrades supposed to be better? with all the added features of vista, it is cluttered and slowed down. get a mac and run leopard. i bought a used one on craig's list for 250. 5 years old and can run the latest OS that the company has to offer. I would love for microsoft to be able to rival that claim!

I'm glad I have a mac. No problems when I upgraded to leopard :)

I am so upset at the fraud by Microsoft about the Vista operating system that I am seeking to reformat my new laptop to XP SP3 when it comes out. But what does Microsoft care. They get my money just the same. You mentioned people looking for a refund. Even if this happens the damage is done. I have wasted my hard earned money on a bogus product offered by a company I thought could be trusted. My son swears by his "Mac". I feel so bambooseled by Microsoft that his "Mac" is starting to look good to me. I think a rebate is in order. Do you know when XP SP3 is due out? And how much will it cost?

I have Windows Vista. I HATE IT!!! When my warrenty runs out, I will buy the XP. Vista is slow as a snail, incompatable with a good number of programs. The research wasn't done completely before Vista was put on computers. The person who came up with Vista should be tared, and feathered, then ran off the earth.
