Study: Daylight Saving Time actually raises utility bills

It's official: Daylight Saving Time is a bust. Designed (and recently extended) as a measure to save energy in a period of inflated electricity prices, an in-depth University of California study has now shown that DST doesn't save anyone any money at all. In fact, it's costing consumers extra, to the tune of $3.19 in extra utility bills per year.

The study was made possible because of the peculiarities of the state of Indiana, which was only partially on DST until 2006. When the whole state finally went DST (to sync with the national business day), some comparisons vs. the prior method were made apparent. The study calculated that the shift costs Indiana residents an extra $8.6 million in electricity bills in total.

Why? Shouldn't they be, well, saving daylight -- and burning fewer light bulbs?

They are, said the study. But while lighting bills were reduced, air-conditioning units had to run more often, because people were home on hot afternoons when they'd otherwise be still at the office. Heaters had to be run on cool mornings, too, when people got up and it was still dark outside.

Professor Matthew Kotchen, who pioneered the study, noted, "I've never had a paper with such a clear and unambiguous finding as this."

This isn't the first time the energy-saving rationale of Daylight Saving Time has been attacked. The first was in 1976, when the National Bureau of Standards found that there was no significant energy savings after the switch. The recent expansion of DST to a few extra weeks was also revealed to have saved no energy during its run. And yet here we are...

In related news, it was also revealed that Daylight Saving Time actually creates no additional daylight.

DST is just another instance of man playing God and trying to control nature. When will man learn.

Is this really a surprise to anyone? It's silly and unnecessary to try to trick our bodies into believing there is more daylight by turning clocks forward and back. I agree with another poster that suggested picking ONE of the times and sticking with it. To do otherwise is simply a waste of time and energy.

Yeah well the province of Saskatchewan knew this all the time and it didn't cost them a penny to show it. Maybe the rest of the continent can follow their lead and drop the whole inconvenient savings permanently. But that isn't going to happen is it?

One year test doesn't prove anything. It needs to be tested for at least 5 years. But what do you expect. you're dealing with the government that never do what the population wants or needs. They're willing to give the war in Iraq the extra 20 years to see if their plan works. Why not DST. After all there are no lives involved in this project. Just $3.19 per year that we pay for not THEM.

An extra hour of daylight is great, but not only logic should have told us it wouldn't save energy (if it's lighter an additonal hour, it's also darker an additional hour when we're getting up in the a.m.), it failed to save money or energy 30 years ago when we tried it in the 70's! It's just gov't failing us again.

Some people don't like anything, unless it is their idea, or they get gredit for it.

Funny though...we complain about the gas prices being over $3.00 per gallon, and having to spend a little extra on our light bills, so we cut back on driving, turn the lights off as much as possible, sweating and or freezing- just to cut down on bills. But rarely do we hear people complain about the cost of Coca-Cola going up to $4.00 per 12-pack (if you do hear it, it is as the complainer is picking up 2- 12 packs at the store)or the price of ciggy's at $5.00 per pack. Prices fluctuate, and we will pay for the things that we need and/or want, regardless of the price. The politicians know this, and that is why they continue to do it.

just leave us with the extra hour of daylight lets us enjoy the longer -lighter evening. THEN LEAVE IT THAT WAY AND DON'T MESS WITH IT. WE ALL NEED THAT EXTRA SUNLIGHT, life is dark enough, lets have more light!

You don't actually get an extra hour of daylight - it's just moved from the beginning of the day to the end of the day. I live in Indiana - I for one miss the morning sunshine! When it's still light until almost 10pm - uggh!

I agree with mongy. It's bad enough when night falls around 6:00 at the peak of DST.
