Analysts peg 3G iPhone for summer release

We've all been waiting, hoping, wishing, and predicting, but more and more analysts are finally putting their bets on summer 2008 as the time for the first big revision of the Apple iPhone, slated to be sold with a high-speed radio replacing that pokey old EDGE wireless system. The smart money? iPhone 2.0 could arrive as early as June or July.

iPhone 2 has been perhaps Apple's worst-kept "secret" product announcement ever, as Jobs himself has strongly hinted it will arrive in 2008 and a host of chipmakers have all but confirmed they are working with Apple to provide 3G and GPS silicon. It's also widely thought that Apple will be making it easier to hook iPhones into corporate email systems like Microsoft Exchange, which would give iPhone a way to eliminate a common complaint that has kept it largely out of the hands of BlackBerry-obsessed business customers so far.

Some of these announcements could be made publicly as early as Thursday, when Apple's "Town Hall" meeting unveils the iPhone SDK to developers, finally giving them the tools they need to (legitimately) build iPhone-specific applications. Additional iPhone announcements are likely on the way as well.

What will the impact of iPhone 2.0 be? I don't know about you, but every tech enthusiast I know who does not yet own an iPhone already has said to me that they're waiting for the faster version to arrive before they plunk down their money for one. I count myself among that group, too. The only question, aside from when Apple will announce a release date, is how long the line will be at the Apple Store to buy one.

3G is a great step forward, but when will they open the iPhone up to the rest of the world?

"It's also widely thought that Apple will be making it easier to hook iPhones into corporate email systems like Microsoft Exchange" Duh? This article is already "old". http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/iphoneroadmap/ Apple already announced this about a week ago at their town hall meeting. "Some of these announcements could be made publicly as early as Thursday, when Apple's "Town Hall" meeting unveils the iPhone SDK to developers." Why does yahoo post old articles on their main page?

I think the worst mistake apple could have done was to make the iphone available only to at@t. They could have made more money allowing other cell phone companies to sell it.

I agree with the comment about not making it available to other cell phone companies. i have verison like the service and would like to stay with them but would love to get an i phone i have a mac.

I Whole Hearted agree with "i have verizon like the service and would like to stay with them but would love to get an i phone i have a mac." Verizon has hands down the BEST service but some of the crummiest model phones. I will be switching when this new one comes out to AT&T. None of Verizons models are mac compatible except for the Palm 755P. What would you rather, the sleek i phone or the clunky Palm?

i don't understand why people always fall for this. this is just a typical apple strategy. they intentionally did not include a 3g in the original iphone but created a hype. they they have another weapon in their back pocket to create another big hype...3g iphone. gimme a break!

I do like the iphone but it is sometimes hard to even put a number in that thing

When are we in the US going to get over the whole "provider locked" mobile phone scam. Phones should be sold unlocked to allow for the consumer to pick and choose the provider. iPhone + AT&T = fascist crap! Enjoy your 2.0 phone but good luck using that 3g connection with your laptop or other network capable device. That is without hacking the phone, voiding the warranty and losing Apple/ATT support.

more than price, the question is what about storage?

  • 20 Posted by m4r4ng on Thu Sep 3, 2009 7:01PM EDT Report Abuse

Just release it unlocked, I'm sure everyone will jump on iphone. Apple knew this will sell by itself, but had to make money off the product and make money off AT&T. Smart !

If they want to sell more, they should make it for more service providers. Besides Cingular

"without a keyboard" ??? What are you thinking?

  • 23 Posted by ljkid69 on Thu Sep 3, 2009 6:54PM EDT Report Abuse

Can't wait till the2.0 comes out . I love the original the only issue i really have is the speed and now that Apple has addressed that issue it should be a hit for sure . Get iphone downloads at http://www.HottDownloads.com/ Economical alternative to itunes.

Stop complaining about price. Apple hasnt even lanced the first Iphone in Denmark yet, not to mention the Iphone 2.
