Reports: T-Mobile could acquire Sprint

Talk about some a strange possibility: Could the nation's fourth largest cellular carrier, T-Mobile, gobble up the third largest, Sprint Nextel? Analysts are saying that in order to maintain competitiveness and help avoid a price war in the cellular space (though that's already happening, to be honest), T-Mobile's parent company, Deutsche Telekom, could make a play for beleaguered Sprint.

The scenario is particularly possible because of DT's foreign ownership; a weak dollar means Sprint can be had for far less now that it would in better economic conditions, and Sprint's stock is down nearly 50 percent since the beginning of the year.

Of course, technical challenges would be incredible if the two companies were to merge: T-Mobile is a GSM network (as is DT overseas), while Sprint is a CDMA network. When Sprint bought Nextel it was put in the position of integrating itself with Nextel's old iDEN network, something that has gone so poorly that some say Sprint might actually spin Nextel back off into its own company. (The combined Sprint Nextel aggravated customers of both companies, who have fled in droves.) With three types of networks to manage, it's hard to fathom how a smallish operation like T-Mobile could cope. Or would T-Mobile bite the bullet and force all Sprint customers into GSM handsets?

That said, the idea of a cellular merger at least creates the opportunity for a great new corporate name. Sprint blew an awesome opportunity when it failed to name its new corporation something like Sprextel. Now T-Mobile has a chance to do something bold. T-Mobisprex for the win.

T-Mobile is lame! They dont have M2M nor do they run off the same network. It would cost them MILLIONS to merger.

Smallish? T-Mobile is HUGE - they are just extremely conservative about many moves they make. T-Mobile's footprint of GPRS and SMS coverage worldwide with 150 GPRS networks covering more than 70 countries and over 350 networks in over 160 countries. As for M2M, T-Mobile is one of the TOP companies in the world for M2M networks and solutions. Here is a direct quote from T-Mobile about this: "T-Mobile is the premier carrier network provider for the M2M marketplace. T-Mobile focuses on supporting our reseller partners instead of competing with them in the solutions business. We are here to maintain the wireless GSM/GPRS/Edge backbone for multiple telemetry solutions and we are the only carrier with an international footprint on one network platform." As far as CDMA support goes, since 2004 T-Mobile has maintained both the European and the USA CDMA/W-CDMA backbone, as well as provided phones for the majority of the European CDMA/W-CDMA market. They just dont offer any in the US at the moment. So is the buyout a good choice? You bet! And what is the buyout price? The offer tendered, supposedly, is $110 BILLION for Sprint...

Thats all we need is for another buyout. these companies should try and make cell use better with better connecting while roaming and less bull. They all want to try and make you buy there services and sign dumb long use contracts well all they need to do is make there services better and cheaper prices to make customers happy with there companies.

i can tell you from using both t-mobile and sprint that t-mobile is much easier to deal with as far as customer service goes- maybe t-mobile could turn sprint into a more user friendly service.i canceled my service with sprint because their customer service is horrible and i had a lot of issues trying to connect my phone to my p.c. spending everyday on the phone with sprint,in different parts of the world trying to solve my issues was a nightmare.cheers t-mobile!
