Linux and Wal-Mart seem like they should go hand-in-hand. Wal-Mart's avowed goal is to offer the lowest prices at retail. And when it comes to PC OSes, you can't beat Linux: It's free. So it comes as a bit of a surprise when Wal-Mart says it's pulling its Linux-based computers off of store shelves. Why? No one was buying them.
The Everex "gPC" Linux computers, which cost just $199, made headlines when they were launched late last year and quickly sold out. But after the initial rush to grab the units (10,000 were sold in a week), sales appear to have stopped, or at least dramatically slowed.
Wal-Mart says merely, "This really wasn't what our customers were looking for," which is corporate-speak for "We didn't sell enough to justify the shelf space." Wal-Mart is infamous for pushing suppliers to slash prices to razor-thin profit margins and demanding sales be maintained at very high levels lest the shelf space be given away to better-performing products. I've no doubt that's exactly what happened here: The profit on a $199 computer can't be more than a few bucks, and desktops take up a ton of room.
Of course, the reason why the ultra-cheap computer wasn't selling requires a bit more conjecture. The specs on the Everex machines were decidedly stripped down, but I imagine it's the lack of Windows that ultimately made it tough for most people to pull the trigger and purchase one. Everyone loves to bash the Microsoft OS, but when it comes time to buy a new computer, people tend to gravitate toward what's familiar (and, importantly, what they use at the office). If anyone has other theories why the Linux computer didn't make it, post them in the comments below.
Here's some good news for Linux fans: The $199 computer will still be on sale at walmart.com.

It's a no brainer. I run Novell Linux as well as Solaris from Sun Microsystems and I realize that I am in the slim 10% that do so. I also have windows as 90% of even the Linux/Unix crowd do because it comes with 90% of PCs. 10% market share is not enough to grace the shelves at the largest retailer on the planet. I have a different view. I buy a PC for hardware and whatever software comes with it is a freebie because I already have software galore from years of PC ownership. In the case of Windows, the PCs come so loaded down with manufacturer specific junk and about 35 (seriously here, 35 or more) background tasks that completely prevent you from harnessing the power of the machine because it's busy doing whatever the manufacturer configured it to do. Yes, this includes transmitting information over the internet that you DID NOT authorize. ALERT TO WINDOWS USERS: DO NOT BUY A WINDOWS PC WITHOUT A STAND ALONE COPY OF WINDOWS SO YOU CAN FREE YOURSELF FROM ALL OF THE ADD ON JUNK AND JUST INSTALL THE WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM. In my opinion Windows is not worth running in the typical bloated configuration but is a decent OS when used properly. The problem is the cost which is just below $1000 retail for the good stuff including office, Visio, thier photo editing software, etc.
This is a point that's been made, but I think deserves to be hammered home. Wal-Mart markets to the lowest common denominator. I'm not saying that EVERYONE who shops at Wal-Mart is stupid, but I got laid off from a job and worked in a Wal-Mart for a short time while I looked for something better. Intelligent people do come in there, but that's not who Wal-Mart markets to. That's not their intended demographic. They aim at the poor and the uneducated. Their target audience is those people too stupid to realize what sleeze they are dealing with. If Wal-Mart was a COUNTRY, they would be China's third largest trading partner. A large percentage of the stuff at Wal-Mart is garbage. First off, I wouldn't take a computer from that place if you gave it to me. Second, you have to have some education and a brain on your shoulders to operate a Linux machine, and too many of Wal-Mart's customers are stupid. And it likes them that way.
Its not a bust, its still available at walmart.com, you can ship to the store for free. Most people do not know linux, that includes the store clerks that help sell the computers at the store. Most important is that you do not need a super hard drive or alot of ram memory to run a full linux distribution. Linux runs great and the price can't be beat...
the reason people dont buy Linux is it is hard to find software compatible with the OS
Is there a Linux OS for the desktop ? With windows and all ? Can you program Win32 API on the desktop ?
Linux doesnt have many buyers because people keep talking about what an efficient OS it is and all that it can do without taking into consideration human factors like Aesthetics , familairity and ease of use. When I buy a PC I am looking for it to do work easily and am not interested in OS freedom and csutomizable kernels and things like that. Even a physics professor will prefer to drive around in a car that is thermodynamically less efficient but has good aesthetics and comfort level rather than travel in car with an engine efficiency of 99% but poor looks and no comfort. Linux advocates need to address human beings and their needs instead of boasting about how efficiently Linux implements garbage collection compared to Windows and expect people to buy Linux. Your attitude is like that of a engineer who has a car with efficient engine and titanium drive-train but no AC and no music system wondering why most people preferred a car with 50% engine efficiency and ordinary steel drive train but with AC and music system. The product needs to BENEFIT people.
Linux is useful for boasting and proving what an intelligent man you are .It is merely a status symbol to prove you belong to Geekdom.Nothing Else !
Well, I never heard about these machines. The price is right. I would have bought one.
I'll bet many of those who bought one of the Linux based systems had no idea what they were buying until they turned it on and were really irritated when they didn't see a Windows loading screen. It doesn't matter how much SUPPORT there is for Linux, or how many good points it has, people are used to Windows and that's what they know how to use. The average Joe isn't checking on Linux forums, or any forums, for support these days. Most people are very computer illiterate and it needs to be kept simple. Linux is not simple in the sense that Windows is far more established and familiar to people.
The reason the computers are not moving is the same as why Linux lags....GAMES!!! Only a very few games have been ported to Linux. And the games native to Linux are so PC-DOS in 16 colors. A problem I have run across is Wifi adapters. It i----- or miss to get them to work. And if they do work the encryption may not the best. Thirdly, if the app you want or need is not in the native package...good luck downloading and installing. I on occasion play with Ubuntu and I can get it on the internet, But only with WEP encryption which means I have to dumb down my router.
should have gave out free live Cds so people could test linux and see if they would buy it. Kind of like a trail before you really buy it.
Do you think LINUX is free??? Please think twice...who's buying lunch for those people who "claim" that they are developing the so-called Free software?
There is no free lunch right, sooner or later one has to pay the piper. Recently free open database ware, was bought out by one well known software/hardware manufacturer, I heard they paid billions. The question is who did they pay billions to. Some one is making money in free ware. The other question, when you need support who do you call at any hour and do you have to pay; can you trust mission critical applications running on free ware. I would like to know if there are any free ware automobiles, I need to buy a new car!!!!!!!!
What a disappointment as I have used Microsoft for over 14 yrs but at the same time kept up with linux in the last 8 yrs and I can tell you it's all worth it when it comes to it's real integrity and that is it's kernel. Windows is not as stable, viruses, spyware and lots of junk as for the hidden source code, we have no idea what they are really doing with it. I have had a Linux machine forever and still works like new after D/L and using it for over 4 yrs. I can't express how much it would benefit the American people and all the world to use this software and stay away from the monopoly companies. It is harder to work with when getting more into detail but worth it 100%. LET'S LEARN AND GO LINUX ALL THE WAY!!!
why is Linux Free? It seems there is alot of work being done, and alot of information being spread around about how this OS is better, simpler, more stable, etc. And best of all, its free. Free downloads, free online support, free programs and all that good stuff. Nothing is for free in this world. It doesn't make sense to make something 'better' and give it away free. Free means no profit. So whats the catch?
if you are shopping at walmart for computer then you most likely dont know about linux, and wouldnt buy something youve never heard of.

In regards to being FREE, there is money being made. The OS is free and a few more things but you will pay for the technical support as this is where they make their money. One thing that is also true is that Mr. Linus was and is still not greedy because he wanted people to have access to the code and be able to make it better by having engineers and other savy people contribute to a better stable OS. Go to the linux site and read all about it. There is more to read than what I could post for you. You will definitely be convinced once you have done your research. It's about helping people not making all kinds of money by taking advantage of people like Billy Gates. "Now, he's greedy."
easy people are lack of knowledge of linux but if i was going to go into selling it, Ubuntu would be the best to offer people. User friendly aswell. People don't want to lose all their applications on windows; however, If linux could support windows applications FULLY and not just with WINE. if linux could support the . Net framework with no problem people may buy the computers.
