World of Warcraft skills thwart moose attack

Somehow I missed this news when it hit last December, but it's critical that we get the word out on this serious issue, because saving lives is a topic of eternal, timeless importance. So let's cut to the chase: World of Warcraft can save your life.

This is (apparently) not a joke, as one Hans Jørgen Olsen of Norway discovered when a renegade moose charged him and his sister while they were playing in the forest near their home. Olsen immediately turned to the skills he picked up from hours of training in WoW: Specifically, "feign death," a level 30 "Hunter" class skill, which allows characters to appear dead and, hopefully, tricks enemies (including moose) into wandering away. In this case, it seems to have worked, as young Hans lived to tell his tale around the campfire later that evening, over a hearty flagon of apple juice.

As Wired notes, this can't be seen as anything other than a full vindication of the positive social value of video games. In a world filled with rampaging moose, no one has taken the initiative to teach our children of how to protect themselves in the event of an attack. As well, video Games will also improve your concentration and your eyesight, both of which are critical when moose are around.

That said, there's one part of this story that comes across as a little fishy. If this kid was such a crackerjack World of Warcraft player, what was he doing playing outside? Hmmm....

Im a WoW player and I have a life. I cant stand not being outside. I cant stand not being around other people. I know a lot of my friends that play WoW are the same way. Of course thats the way we were raised. We were raised in the woods. My house is 3 miles deep in the woods and if you dont have a truck u wont get to it. So not EVERYONE that plays WoW has no life.

I learned this "play dead" move from Bugs Bunny.

Silliness. Utter silliness. Playing dead has been around for years. People used to do it back in the day when camping in a forest and confronted by an angry bear 100 years before video games. If the kid would have read a book maybe he would have seen it there, but I guess hours, weeks, months on a pointless video game is much better than any kind of reading.

Doesn't work for druids. I tried my Entangling Roots on a cougar we saw on a recent family hike. Just about got us killed.

If parnets did that (PARENTING) the child would have learned that WITHOUT video games. But NOOOOO, most parents nowadays would much rather sit the child down in front of a tv/video game, than take an active role in thier childs life. Anyone from the northern part of the US, Canada, or ANY other Northern country KNOWS these things, (how to deal with charging animals)

this is such a lame story... i hate how he tries to be all sarcastic throughout the WHOLE darn THING. another thing... who the heck is dumb enough NOT to play dead when an animal is charging towards you. OH by the way i learned how to shoot guns playing a GAME called counter-strike. Thats right games do teach kids how to shoot guns. I bet those kids who went on a shootin spree on campus hd counter-strike installed on their computer at one point or another. I should know because i know what kinds of kids play counter-strike. The crazy white kids or the WIERD asians.
