Video game cheating comes in many forms, the most notorious of which involves people who use dirty tricks to make themselves more effective (or invincible) in multiplayer combat games. The solution for people caught engaging in this form of cheating has long been permanent cancellation of the account and a lifetime of shame... at least until he or she gets a new account, that is.
But with the rise of Gamerscore and Achievements on Xbox Live, a new form of cheating has become popular: people who manipulate their save files and account information to artificially boost their Gamerscore by unlocking Achievements they didn't actually earn. Of course, neither Gamerscore nor Achievement unlocking will help you actually play a game better—both serve as mere bragging rights... and so they have become something that cheaters have begun to manipulate relentlessly.
Better watch out, says Xbox Live's Major Nelson, the well-known public face of Microsoft when it comes to all things Xbox. Starting today, Xbox is punishing Gamerscore cheaters with some pretty heavy penalties. If you've used a cheat on your account, better check it out to see if you've been affected. How will you know?
Well, your Gamerscore will be reset to zero. You won't be able to regain any Achievement you previously unlocked (legitimately or otherwise), though you will be able to gain new Achievements. And your account will be permanently labeled as a cheater account (see blurry pic above for an example). At least you still get to keep your account.
There you have it. It's like your mom always told you: Cheaters never win, and... well, you know the rest.

Hey i play videogames. I don't live with my parents, i have a girlfriend, i'm not fat, i have a bachelor's degree, and i also smoke a lot of pot. Go ahead attack me for owning a 360 and ps3 and liking games. Its great stop the cheaters, label them, its about time. However there's no need for these illogical arguments, sweeping generalizations, and personal attacks on the values and beliefs of people who are part of the gaming community or any other for that matter. A lot the people who have commented here really need to look at what they're saying. The 360 is a decent system, yes many of them do fail and i'm on my 3rd system now. Who cares, they fix them for free and when it does work it performs pretty well. The ps3 is also a great system. Really just stop your senseless attacks on systems and their owners and have some respect for other human beings, yes even cheaters although they deserve to be punished to maintain some sense of order and reliability in gaming. Yeah i play games, its not a waste of time or life regardless of how you may feel about it. Seriously, if you're going to say something at least take the time to be logical and coherent in order to contribute to a productive discussion. Name-calling and labeling are not helping anyone. In summary: 'Punishing' cheaters is good, yeah there's nothing to stop them from just starting a new account butt at least now there will be some measure to prevent them from cheating on it. Cheaters detract from everyone's experience but i doubt they can ever really be stopped.
Well this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black! Microsoft has cheated the public for years, maybe they should have to put "cheater" on every product they sell. Someone made a comment about only Americans careing about this. In the U.S. (unlike other countries) we try to make the punishment fit the crime. For MS to permanently label someone a cheater is way overkill in terms of crime and punishment. But what should we expect from a company that is more foreign than American now. But people this is only a game and only a game playing machine. Who cares if someone cheats! Get real and get a life! It is a sad world today because everyone is so serious about a stupid game and game toy. There are much more important things to worry about.
Also the comments saying its just game so stop caring about cheaters is somewhat correct, but i'd like to see that stance carried over to the olympics, they're just games who cares right? let them cheat. heck let them cheat in all sports because they're really just gaming away their lives. Then for the comments saying they should be fixing their systems and not worrying about cheating issues, do you really think all of microsoft's gaming department stopped to focus on one issue? Lots of people have different jobs and skills, some worked on this because its relevant to what they can do, likewise with the faulty console issues. In the end any contribution they make to improving the gaming experience on any front should be welcome.
My hat is off to Xbox Live !!!! I say keep doing what it can to "stop" the cheater! It maybe small beans to some, but it means alot to me.
Bragging about something you didn't do,alot of losers in this world

I think microsoft should focus on the problem of the consoles breaking down then go after the cheaters
