Xbox cheaters get major smackdown

Video game cheating comes in many forms, the most notorious of which involves people who use dirty tricks to make themselves more effective (or invincible) in multiplayer combat games. The solution for people caught engaging in this form of cheating has long been permanent cancellation of the account and a lifetime of shame... at least until he or she gets a new account, that is.

But with the rise of Gamerscore and Achievements on Xbox Live, a new form of cheating has become popular: people who manipulate their save files and account information to artificially boost their Gamerscore by unlocking Achievements they didn't actually earn. Of course, neither Gamerscore nor Achievement unlocking will help you actually play a game better—both serve as mere bragging rights... and so they have become something that cheaters have begun to manipulate relentlessly.

Better watch out, says Xbox Live's Major Nelson, the well-known public face of Microsoft when it comes to all things Xbox. Starting today, Xbox is punishing Gamerscore cheaters with some pretty heavy penalties. If you've used a cheat on your account, better check it out to see if you've been affected. How will you know?

Well, your Gamerscore will be reset to zero. You won't be able to regain any Achievement you previously unlocked (legitimately or otherwise), though you will be able to gain new Achievements. And your account will be permanently labeled as a cheater account (see blurry pic above for an example). At least you still get to keep your account.

There you have it. It's like your mom always told you: Cheaters never win, and... well, you know the rest.

Hmmm... A P.O.S. System that is now famous for breaking down and the only company to extend their warranty to cover units from first launch, that "has nothing to do with the system's longevity." Yeah I'd say microsoft has everything under control now that they are going after GS hax instead of recalling the systems and replacing every single one on the market with a guaranteed legitimately working system that won't die with the red ring of death.

Microsoft tries to take away the publicity away from the Red Ring of Death.. who cares about achievements if your 360's hardware is more fried than a mcdonalds' french fry..

Oh god noooooo!!! Please Microsoft don't delete my account or label me as a cheater, I will never succeed in the gaming world. What has happened to my life, Jesus Christ I think I will shrivel up and decompose. Note: If this article is true to your life then you are a waste of space and should just continue to live in your mom's basement and eat Hot Pockets. Get a life people. How the heck is this news?

I work for my achievements and the bragging rights that come with them. This is a welcome step. After all, the person can still play and can still earn. They're just going to have a nice little handicap to live with for their score. I honestly don't see the need to put a 'cheater' label like a big scarlet letter, although I suspect that's so someone who cheats will find it harder to re-manipulate things once caught.

I guess MS has already found out what is popular and unpopular. Personally I think even those rules are to light a punishment for cheaters. From the comments posted here, I would say that some of the above commentators are some of the cheaters!!

This is so childlish, only Americans would care about. It is a publicity stunt for 7 year old boys.

So they've irreperably harmed the cheater's account and believe that despite this the cheater, who cares all about their image, will keep the account? How is that even remotely logical?

That's smart, let's blast our customer's and maybe someday we'll have none at all.

This is absolutely pathetic in every sense of the word.

Maybe Xbox will enforce this heavily on Madden 08 and make these cheaters stop blitzing every down and holding to make their running backs zip through holes. And stop these cheaters who like to unnecessarily go for 2 points when they should be kicking the extra point.

i think this is great, about time they do something more public to expose people who cheat. i agree only with what rwhite247 said about only cheaters care, but to publicly know that they cheated and have them wear that banner for the rest of the time playing is great. thx
