Video game cheating comes in many forms, the most notorious of which involves people who use dirty tricks to make themselves more effective (or invincible) in multiplayer combat games. The solution for people caught engaging in this form of cheating has long been permanent cancellation of the account and a lifetime of shame... at least until he or she gets a new account, that is.
But with the rise of Gamerscore and Achievements on Xbox Live, a new form of cheating has become popular: people who manipulate their save files and account information to artificially boost their Gamerscore by unlocking Achievements they didn't actually earn. Of course, neither Gamerscore nor Achievement unlocking will help you actually play a game better—both serve as mere bragging rights... and so they have become something that cheaters have begun to manipulate relentlessly.
Better watch out, says Xbox Live's Major Nelson, the well-known public face of Microsoft when it comes to all things Xbox. Starting today, Xbox is punishing Gamerscore cheaters with some pretty heavy penalties. If you've used a cheat on your account, better check it out to see if you've been affected. How will you know?
Well, your Gamerscore will be reset to zero. You won't be able to regain any Achievement you previously unlocked (legitimately or otherwise), though you will be able to gain new Achievements. And your account will be permanently labeled as a cheater account (see blurry pic above for an example). At least you still get to keep your account.
There you have it. It's like your mom always told you: Cheaters never win, and... well, you know the rest.

And what's to keep them from just getting a new account? Doesn't seem that hard to me.
How does this "punishment" keep a cheater from cancelling the scarlet-letter account and starting fresh? I don't have a GS account, so forgive my ignorance.
Since when did XBOX cheating became news??? Ohh I forgot it is for those people who still lives in their parens' basement and have never seen a woman naked.....this is great what is this world coming to.
I guess some of us need to act like we are two, I thought the who idea of playing the game was so YOU would bet it yourself not get help cheating doing so, what fun is that "hey dud I'm on level 20 I found this pass word on line to help me get here??" Children, Children, Children!!! And how many time have I asked you not to play with your food???
I play on xbox live and my gamerscore is 9075 but i didn't cheat i always wondered how people gamerscore could be over 20,00 with only a few acheivements but now i know they cheated and thats not fair so all my friends that cheated im removing them from my friend list
My PS3 60gb is coming in the mail! WoooHooo! Xboxs were always bad.
wey
i'm more concerned about why it takes a whole magazine 2 knock some of these guys down in cod4. i consider that cheating.
What I see in this new set of rules is a new market for professional players to make money... If u can't cheat to boost your score but u are a retard that considers it important to have a high score then pro players will come in and offer to boost your account for money.. We ve seen it before in MMORPGs (like WoW) were chineese gold farmers sell ingame gold for real money or level up acounts for reasonable (
Please, more posts like 64. I can always use a shot of cheap comic relief. Laughing at ignorant people is Schadenfreude, I know- but at least my existence has more joy than this poor ----- 's. Playing video games for a living? Is this what happens to you when your grasp of the English language is so poor as to be nearly non-existent? Welcome to electronic serfdom, the "life" of a lot lizard on the information superhighway...
Uhhh seriously? I cheat with all my games... OOOH IM BAD IM SO BAD PLEASE SPANK ME MASTER. WHO CARES, GAMES ARE JUST GAMES. PLEASE SPANK ME IM SO NAUGHTY. WHIP IT AH YEAH.
I not much of a gamer but people seem to be misinterpreting what they meant by "cheaters." They're only cracking down on the Live gameplay cheaters unfairly upping their Gamescore and Achievements. They don't care if you play your solo game and add invincibility, thirty extra lives, continues, whatever to your character. They just care about people cheating others in a public access community that people are, in a way, paying to see. You know, performing cheats they don't intentionally give to you. Nobody wants to pay to watch a lip synched concert. I like camg37 and turbulentus' comments. They actually sound intelligent. Oh, and yeah, red ring of dooooom. My boyfriend's brother was victim to that. =/
That sux... Hey i cheat on my wife at least once a week and have been caught once before and nothing bad happened. F*** xbox
"How does this "punishment" keep a cheater from cancelling the scarlet-letter account and starting fresh? I don't have a GS account, so forgive my ignorance." ANSWER: It doesn't, however, it does put the cost or another account into the pockets of xbox live. Also, a player is less likely to bother cheating on such said "new account" if they know its just going to be labeled a cheater all over again. So, chalk up one less cheater and one more account paid for.
Way to go xbox!!! ^_^ Nikki
yea i mean me a my broter were having fun on halo2 and bam! some cheater comes in and ruins all of the fun
oh now you gone and done it brought race into it!! good lord when you every give up!!!??? I think it's great that Microsoft is willing to put a bit of a crack down on cheaters. I know the Gamerscore really isn't that important, but in the Live community, people do pay attention. I could care less what my score is, but find myself looking at other profiles that are public to see what they have done. In all honesty, the kinds of people who "adjust" their Gamerscore are the same kinds of people who would cheat in multiplayer games. By labeling them as a cheater, it helps stop a lot of other behavior that could ruin other player's good times. Let's face it...Microsoft is a business. On X-Box Live you pay a fee to have the ability to play most games with other players online. It only takes one cheater to upset players enough to stop playing online. Why pay to have some little jerk tweak the game so he/she can win? I'll just stop paying for X-Box Live, enjoy the free silver service, and stop playing online...maybe switch to my PC where I don't have to pay extra for most games. By taking a stronger stand, Microsoft is protecting it's already tentative hold on the online gaming pie. More power to them!
