It's deja vu all over again. Once again, a scammer has used Craigslist either as a prank or with truly malicious intent to entice scavengers into taking away just about everything from one homeowner's property. All it took were a couple of "Everything must go and it's all free!" ads on the site and, poof!, it was pretty much gone in no time flat.
Robert Salisbury was a bit luckier than Laurie Raye. Salisbury caught wind of what was going on when he encountered people driving away from his property, loaded down with his stuff. He stopped them in the road and questioned them, demanding hisĀ not-really-free goods back, but they took off with his property nonetheless. By the time he reached his house he was greeted by nearly 30 people going through his things, many of whom refused to leave empty-handed and others who fled with the gear they'd managed to load into their cars before the cops showed up.
One good Samaritan gave Salisbury a call and tipped him off to what was going on. She was preparing to ride off with the man's horse when she figured out something wasn't right, considering that the horse was still in good shape and didn't look abandoned as the ad claimed.
The question now falls to lawyers and police to determine who placed the ad and who's legally responsible for Salisbury's losses. Police say it's unlikely anyone who took his stuff will be prosecuted. And while the person who placed the ad is clearly at fault, the question now falls to whether Craigslist is liable for the fraudulent listing... but he'll have to take 'em to court if he wants to find out.

People that went and did this to this man, are bad people, they are thiefs, tacking his things when clearly he did not want theme to. These people should be ashamed of theme-selves and return his things!
Craigslist can't possibly verify the veracity of every ad on the site. One can hardly put the blame on them. This could have just as easily happened via newpaper or other medium. Obviously a lot of blame falls on the shoulders of the person that placed the ad. However, the folks that were confronted and still ran off with this guy's stuff should be prosecuted to. They were told that they were committing theft and chose to prey on an innocent victim anyway. Those people are essentially complicit to the crime. The man was being victimized and instead of doing the right thing and returning the property, they chose to aid in the victimizing. Terrible stuff. I still have the question of how all these people managed to get their hands on this guy's property? Did he leave his house open?
#5 tell me why this is CL fault? If it was posted in a newspaper classified would you say the same thing.People shouldnt be so stupid as to rely on a post on a website to just go and loot someones property.I have seen similar postings and have always checked them out.
#1 reason to maintain privacy. So Unreal it's Real.
Craigslist should be closed down with crimes happening because of it. true, the same stuff may appear on a newspaper, but the thing is you cant go to google, type in "free stuff" and get a top-ten listing for a classified ad. the top-tens will be craigslist and the equivalent.
jd_1876 - So if I am understanding you correct...you admit that the same fraud can be done with a print paper, you don't express an opinion that the newspaper is liable or should be shut down, but Craigslist should be shut down because it's easier and faster to get results from? I don't follow you. And anyway, if you close Craigslist, you'll just end up with Joeslist, or Johnslist. Unless you are proposing to make all online classified ad systems illegal. I admit that you have bad people that make fradulent postings on Craigslist, but the real problem is the lack of common sense and the immoral behavior of the people responding to the ads. In this case, what excuse can any of the thieves use once they were notified by the homeowner that the ad was a fraud and they still took his property?
it,s a great website for local buyers & sellers just do away with the free stuff, some people won,t use it the way it,s meant to be.
Gotta love the human spirit. Here here for the good samaritan.
I can imagine it now, people eventually posting stuff like this for a NASA base or police station. Everyone who shows up thinking it's real should be shot on sight to help cleanse the genetic pool a little bit.
I don't normally advocate violence, but shouldn't the owner have exerted at little more force to get his stuff back?
Name of virus:"Virus identify Java/ByteVerify" One day I scan my computer. Then my anti-virus found a virus, but the virus was not healed then my anti-virus put it to virus vault. I don't know if it is strong or not but for me it is strong, because my anti-virus cannot heal it

i think who runs the web page like craiglist or others is at faut and need to clean up the page, even yahoo or google we need top have people to look over this at gov,
craigslist GUILTY!
Another day, another crime committed using craigslist... Sigh... Remember when if you wanted to get rid of stuff you put up signs that said YARD SALE? Much better times...
Angeladst16 - You can't sue Craigslist. They are simply a forum for people to talk, sell crap, etc. It is not their fault that someone posted a listing for free items. It is noth their responsibility to look into every single posting on the page. Therefore, it is not their responsibility to reimburse those that were wronged. Nice thinking though!
So it seems the people responsible have been caught. The reason behind it,they stole stuff from the guys house and to cover it up posted th add so the evidence would be trashed. You dummy's still want to blame CL for this? You are the same people that would blame a liquor manufacturer on your alcoholism,or your drug addiction on the drug maker.Grow up and put the blame where it belongs with the trash that posted the add. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2008/0401081horse1.html?link=rssfeed
Hmmmm, if it sounds too good to be true......
I always hated craigslist , i think it's the most poorly designed site out there for classifieds i am shocked it does so well....

Craigslist work but with every idea with good intentions the laws of nature and good and evil take over. Craigslist is just as reponsible for this as Ytube is for posting copy protected content. The end result will be the loss of the free and give away section. This will then force these scams on the other areas. I just got 2 nice routers and a digital camera free on Craigslist. I would hate to see it change. thinkingbiggar.com - high tech on a budget (yes mostly free) - no really its free
